Why Melanie Harris chose Barrio de Santiago
There are some stunning properties in Merida but our home is not just stunning but super well thought out for ultimate comfort and relaxation. With screens on all of the doors and fully openable portico areas you can choose whether to let nature in or to allow it to waft in through the window. This is great for the days when you really just want to enjoy some air conditioning. The pool is the perfect lap pool after a day of enjoying a stroll around this great part of town. Our rooms offer privacy and space and we keep the highest quality linens and bath towels possible. Our living room is such a great place to kick back and have a great conversation with the kitchen at arms length for making margaritas or pouring a mezcal. Our property managers at Yucatan Best Living are the best for coordinating your spa services, in house requests and local travel destinations.
What makes this House unique
The house is one block from the beautiful and lively Santiago Park which hosts a live band with dancing every Tuesday night and houses the perfect little fresh market for your shopping needs. We are also just a few blocks from the main plaza. You can walk to restaurants and museums. You can quickly catch a taxi either on the street or at the taxi stand a block away and easily go to major shopping malls, restaurants, museums, cenotes and archeological sites. Or you can stay home and lounge by the pool with your favorite beverage...

Perfect Home For a Family
My husband and I and our 8 month twins stayed at Casa de los Monos for 18 days. The house is impeccably styled, comfortable, authentic and relaxing. It is clean and we'll maintained, not to mention beautiful. The pool was wonderful and large after a day of site seeing. Ample living space. It was our first time traveling with children. We appreciated having a house so that the babies could nap in their room but we could still enjoy the common areas and pool. This is in contrast to if we had stayed at a hotel where nap time would have meant that we were confined to our hotel room. Easy walk to all of the major attractions in the city. The Mercado Santiago is full of great bites and entertainment too... just steps from your door! Great coffee shop on the corner too for morning Java. The conceirge service for even the most minor request was superb. Even on a Sunday they responded quickly.
Can easily get to el centro by bus or Uber! Great pool!
An unexpected sweet private retreat behind the unassuming font door.
La Casa de Monos served as our pied a terre for our 40th wedding anniversary weekend for my husband and I in the company of our adult children and their spouses. It was fun to venture out into the late May heat for exploration in Merida for meals or markets, or further afield to Campeche, or the beaches, and then return to the calm, cool spaces from another era. The five of us enjoyed breakfast in the blue tiled kitchen, drinks in the great hall, a swim to cool off and relax.
Be prepared for unexpected spaces and scales. Imagine the hammocks typical of the Mayan community, and climb up to beds of heights never encountered before. They fit the scale of the rooms, but might be somewhat of a challenge for the shorter ones among us!! That would be me! But I loved it!
Experience the wonder of keys and locks. We are so used to uniformity of how to close and lock up. Not in this case. Step back into time with a set of keys and figure out which key goes to which door. It is not difficult but it reminds you that there is an evolution to keys and locks over time. The lock from the wooden main door is different from the newer glass door or from the doors to the patio. The evolution of the building dances in front of you and teases your knowledge about the making of a building.
The home is appointed for comfort and taste. Not over decorated, but solid colonial furniture, complemented with perfect touches of old and new Mexico on the walls.
Plenty of good towels and drinking water. The kitchen was my favorite space with evocative lighting and blue tiles and talavera bowls. It comes with staples, a good fridge, coffee maker, stove and microwave and washer/dryer.
The house has everything you need and allows you to enjoy in peace and comfort a meaningful adventure in Mexico.
Comfortable, well equipped, beautifully decorated
Conveniently located, close to many attractions. Pool was s welcome relief in the warm afternoons
Beautiful and comfortable!
Just like the photos!
Property was fantastic! Pleasingly appointed, especially the pool and outdoor living spaces.
Property manager, Lilian, greeted us and showed us the home and rules. The property was decorated to perfection, pleasing to the eye and comfortable. The ability to open doors to the pool and patio was perfect for enjoying music and cooling breezes. Restaurants were awesome, some foodie, some divine and traditional cuisine: the newly named Viva Merida, La Recova, La Negrita Cantina. Visited Progreso for sun bathing and eating twice at Crabster. All fantastic experiences. Thursday evenings on Santa Lucia Square are filled with music and dancing. Reserve your favorite restaurant there many weeks before. Amenities are close by, supermarkets and pharmacies. Paseo de Montejo is notable avenue of restaurants, shops, museums and architecture. Mayan monuments are close by. Chichen Itsa is 2 hrs away with lots of walking. GO EARLY TO BEAT HEAT AND CROWDS. Uber is everywhere and safe. All in all, Casa de Los Monos(house of the monkey) was extremely relaxing, immaculate, and difficult to leave at the end of our stay!! Thank you, Melanie!
For Mayan pyramid exploring and viewing old mansions and haciendas, excellent restaurants and shopping, this home is perfect. A marvelous beach is thirty minutes away.
