If you are looking for an elegant and luxurious home in the best location of the historic Centro of Merida at reasonable rents, one block from Parque Santiago, Casa de los Monos is it! On the corner of Calle 57 and Calle 74, this home is in Colonia Santiago, the best residential area in the city. Casa de los Monos is not a 'rental house.' Rather it is a private, historic residence which is occasionally available to a few, responsible people for extended stays. Therefore, the furnishings, linens, art, and appointments are commensurate with what you expect to find in a private, luxury home.
The main floor living room has glass doors opening onto the pool. At one end you will find a beautiful tiled and fully equipped kitchen (with powder room) which opens to a lovely dining room with comfortable seating for 8. The other end of the living room opens to a large guest room with two double beds. The elegant and comfortable master bedroom has a queen size bed and opens onto a glassed in sitting room/office going out to the pool. A huge marble bathroom/dressing room connects the two main floor bedrooms. On the second floor is the third bedroom, beautifully decorated with a queen size bed and full bathroom. A balcony overlooks the pool.
Two of the greatest Mayan pyramids (Chichen Itza and Uxmal) are within a two hour drive. Cancun and Guatemala are just 4.5 hours away. The lovely beach of Progreso with its beautiful new Malecon is only a 30 minute drive from Merida and our favorite "secluded" beach town of Sisal is an hour away. Enjoy symphonies, ballets, theater, fine dining, incredible museums, galleries, modern movie theaters, and so much more in this beautiful 'White City' that looks like Paris. Taxis are very reasonable, and the shopping is superb..
The large exercise lap pool has fountains which flow into it, and the lighting at night is magical. The second floor bedroom will comfortably sleep two in a queen size bed. The other two bedrooms downstairs offer a queen size bed in one and two double beds in the other. All the downstairs rooms enjoy large glass windows and doors facing the pool. The ceilings are 18 feet high. The entire building has separate air conditioning in each room.
Come and enjoy one of the most beautiful areas you can imagine, as you relax in a lovely, historical home; enjoy the pool; relax to the music of the built-in stereo sound system; and explore World Heritage sites.
Weekly maid service included. Of significant importance, Merida has the lowest crime rate in Mexico. A strong police presence is everywhere. This is a very safe and friendly city.

There are some stunning properties in Merida but our home is not just stunning but super well thought out for ultimate comfort and relaxation. With screens on all of the doors and fully openable portico areas you can choose whether to let nature in or to allow it to waft in through the window. This is great for the days when you really just want to enjoy some air conditioning. The pool is the perfect lap pool after a day of enjoying a stroll around this great part of town. Our rooms offer privacy and space and we keep the highest quality linens and bath towels possible. Our living room is such a great place to kick back and have a great conversation with the kitchen at arms length for making margaritas or pouring a mezcal. Our property managers at Yucatan Best Living are the best for coordinating your spa services, in house requests and local travel destinations.
The house is one block from the beautiful and lively Santiago Park which hosts a live band with dancing every Tuesday night and houses the perfect little fresh market for your shopping needs. We are also just a few blocks from the main plaza. You can walk to restaurants and museums. You can quickly catch a taxi either on the street or at the taxi stand a block away and easily go to major shopping malls, restaurants, museums, cenotes and archeological sites.
Or you can stay home and lounge by the pool with your favorite beverage...
Just like the photos!
Property manager, Lilian, greeted us and showed us the home and rules. The property was decorated to perfection, pleasing to the eye and comfortable. The ability to open doors to the pool and patio was perfect for enjoying music and cooling breezes. Restaurants were awesome, some foodie, some divine and traditional cuisine: the newly named Viva Merida, La Recova, La Negrita Cantina. Visited Progreso for sun bathing and eating twice at Crabster. All fantastic experiences. Thursday evenings on Santa Lucia Square are filled with music and dancing. Reserve your favorite restaurant there many weeks before. Amenities are close by, supermarkets and pharmacies. Paseo de Montejo is notable avenue of restaurants, shops, museums and architecture. Mayan monuments are close by. Chichen Itsa is 2 hrs away with lots of walking. GO EARLY TO BEAT HEAT AND CROWDS. Uber is everywhere and safe. All in all, Casa de Los Monos(house of the monkey) was extremely relaxing, immaculate, and difficult to leave at the end of our stay!! Thank you, Melanie!
Our stay of five days at Casa de los Monos was even more special than I had hoped or expected. First of all, the house is drop-dead gorgeous. The location is perfect. The accommodation is extremely comfortable too. After a hot day outside, the pool is inviting and refreshing. The kitchen has all you need, if you choose to cook. The bedrooms are inviting and very comfortable. Honestly, it's hard to think of anything wrong with the place. Here are a couple of things to consider when booking: if you book the house with the three bedrooms, be aware that the third room is up a set of rather steep and narrow stairs. There are also a few stairs that step down into the bedroom. No big deal for anyone reasonably healthy. The trade off is the great, private patio outside the room. One other small thing is the traffic outside. At times it can be very noisy. The two intersecting streets at the corner where the house is located can be busy. However, if you are inside with the windows closed and the A/C on, most of the noise is unheard, and most of the noise is during the day. Melanie, the owner is extremely responsive to questions and concerns, as are the local contact people in Merida. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Melanie!
Me and my wife love Merida like a second hometown. This was our first stay at Casa de los Monos and it helped further our love affair with the city and its people. This house is amazing and comfortable and joyous.
One of the benefits is the location. It's nestled into the local community, but is still only a block from Santiago, where you can enjoy dancing and food and buy groceries. It's an easy walk to Lucia, my favorite park, and the main square. And after those walks when we'd come home hot and sweaty, it was an easy change into our swimsuits and a leap into the pool to cool off and swim some laps or just float around. There was some occasional bus traffic on the street, but by the evening it all calmed down and was peaceful with only the sounds of the bands echoing from nearby Santiago, as the moonlight reflected off of the pool and shimmered on the garden wall.
There are air conditioning units in pretty much every room in the house, but we never turned them on. Instead we opened the windows in all of the sliding doors and let the breezes cool off the house. It was remarkable how much cooler the house was, with its high ceilings and large doors and windows, than the streets outside. The only time we used the AC was at night in the bedroom when it was time to sleep, and even then we often turned it off in the night at some point.
The owner, Melanie, was amazing at communicating everything and getting us prepared. And Katia met us at the house, gave us her phone number in case we needed anything and showed us around the house. She even ordered a taxi for us on our final morning when we had to get up early to (unfortunately) leave. We were so well taken care of!
Every day felt like home here and we felt honored to have been allowed to stay in such a wonderful place. If there is a heaven, I hope it's at least half as nice as Casa de los Monos.
Casa de los Monos was the absolute perfect home base for our family of four (two parents, two college age kids) as we explored Mérida and toured the Yucatán Peninsula. The home was as beautiful and well maintained as it appeared in the photos. It was well stocked with everything we needed (including yoga mats!) to make our stay relaxing and comfortable. The host and her staff were also incredibly responsive and gave us some wonderful recommendations which we included in our itinerary. One of the things we loved the most was the pool in the courtyard where we enjoyed cooling off after spending time in the hot sun. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Casa de los Monos especially for travelers that are looking to stay in a neighborhood and outside of touristy areas. We look forward to a return visit.
The house is gorgeous, the centro location is safe and the city of Merida was a dream. We didn't want to leave . . . we are already planning our next trip back!
For Mayan pyramid exploring and viewing old mansions and haciendas, excellent restaurants and shopping, this home is perfect. A marvelous beach is thirty minutes away.
