About the property

Private Suite can accommodate up to four adults.

Sans Souci is French for 'care free.' There could not be a more apt description for this very special property. We are located in the most beautiful and pristine corner of the most scenic lake in the mid-Atlantic region of the US.

Sans Souci offers stunning views of Smith Mountain & a 5,000 acre wilderness preserve from a point lot. Porch, patio, beach & dock offer a wide variety of opportunities to relax & take in the natural beauty of Smith Mountain Lake. Swim, sail, kayak, windsurf, fish, ski, wakeboard & wakesurf directly from the property.

The photogenic views, clean air, natural environment and comfort are simply unparalleled. A two or three day stay is like magic for the soul. This is a truly special property!

New for this winter season! Use of our hot tub with a panoramic view of the starry skies may be added to your stay for a fee of $20 per day, for each day of booking. This is a large, four-person spa with foot jets and various back massage configurations. The southerly view toward the mountain provides an expansive, yet private view of the sky. It is the perfect way to enjoy chilly nights at the lake! Bath robes provided.

The Lake offers four waterfront golf courses, more than a dozen waterfront restaurants, frequent weekend events, a well-known art gallery, boardwalk and easy access to hiking.

The luxurious suite, built in a separate wing of the house, offers wood ceilings in the bedroom, radiant floor heat, luxurious rain shower, satellite TV, wireless Internet and an amazing attention to detail. It is decorated with original art by local artists, family members and African craftsmen. There is a king sized bed with 600-count cotton sheets & European comforters in the bedroom provides a great night's sleep. There is also a King sized ComfortSleeper platform bed in the sitting room.

A photo of the patio even served as the cover for the Roanoke Area Visitor's Guide and a May, 2009 article about Roanoke in US Airways Magazine. That same photo has become the iconic symbol of lake living at SML.

Come see for yourself what everyone is talking about!

PS We are VERY sorry that HomeAway has begun charging a fee to people booking through their website, our guests. We pay HomeAway/VRBO over $600 per year for this listing, specifically because we think that charging guests a percentage of their rental amount is a scam and is undeserved by a company that simply provides web listings. If you agree with us, please let HomeAway/VRBO know that you, too, are opposed to their "double dipping." Contact us if you have questions.

About Anneliese & Bill Piatt

We first met in West Africa when serving in the Peace Corps many years ago. We've lived, worked and traveled around the world, picking up many ideas that have been incorporated into this special place. We open a private wing of our home to B&B guests primarily as a hobby, because we both enjoy meeting interesting people and get pleasure from sharing this special corner of the world.

Anneliese & Bill Piatt purchased this chalet in 1999

Why Anneliese & Bill Piatt chose Smith Mountain Lake

This is a luxurious property, tastefully & discretely adorned with original art, that exudes an air of timelessness that is primarily associated with island living in the tropics. We started with a great lot and then spent nearly 10 years perfecting the complete package - from the interior amenities & appointments to the park-like grounds.

What makes this chalet unique

This is the only part of the lake that has an unobstructed view of Smith Mountain & the 5,000 acre wilderness preserve. The water is the deepest and cleanest on the entire lake. The dark night sky, unpolluted with neighbors' lights, provides a stunning view of the stars - as impressive as any we've seen anywhere in the US!

Peaceful, relaxing, gorgeous!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I visited for our 10th anniversary, and Sans Souci lived up to its reputation! Everything is exactly as pictured (or better), clean clean clean, and very quiet and comfortable. And Anne's breakfasts are every bit as delicious as everyone said they would be! The bed and pillows are very comfortable, the towels are thick and absorbent, the heated floors a treat, the water pressure perfect. The sink and mini fridge are a bonus! The house and yard are beautifully kept and the company (Bill and Anne) were such a pleasure. They even left us an anniversary card and a bottle of champagne! I could go on and on but everyone else has already done that (So make sure to read the other reviews too - it's all true!). I'll mention some activities we enjoyed.

We had no idea what we would do in the area (our only objective was relaxing without the kids), but we found plenty to entertain us! Bill's suggestions were great for dining and leisure. We highly suggest the D-day Memorial (about 40 min away but well worth it, and PLEASE take the guided tour! It was amazing) - that was our favorite thing. We spent about 90 min there and were not bored at all (and we're not major history buffs either). We also loved The Little Gallery with art displays from local artists (I bought a cute necklace) as well as the fudge at Gifts Ahoy (we sampled "cookie dough" and "heath" - YUM!), both located in the Boardwalk area about 30-35 min drive from the house. Father on we visited the birthplace of Booker T Washington (interesting for a short visit, we spent 30-40 min there) and Sunken City Brewery (a local microbrewery that has live music on Saturday afternoons and a beer called Dam Lager - what more could you ask for?). We intended to see a movie at the theater but the weather was so fabulous that we checked out the community park off of Scruggs instead (beautiful scenic views of the lake from a deck/walkway with benches and a big swimming beach with lifeguard which was closed during our visit but looked great) while we waited the remaining hour before our dinner reservations at Blackwater Cafe (which was delicious and higher end - but you can still wear your t-shirt if you want without getting a side eye). All this was accomplished in one day and it didn't feel like too much!

Overall we had an excellent visit and are already thinking of who we can tell to go enjoy it like we did! Go - you won't regret it.

We stayed for our anniversary. It was very short and sweet, but Annalise and Bill made it very low stress and comfortable for us. We aren't morning people at all, but Annalise's food was so good it made it a little easier to wake up. Wish we had more time, but would recommend their lovely B&B to anyone.

Perfect and personalized

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Anne and Bill's beautiful B&B. The lake views were spectacular, but the company and hospitality were even more exceptional. We loved our time at Sans Souci, as did our rambunctious toddler. We look forward to returning in the not too distant future and jumping in the lake after indulging in one of Anne's gourmet breakfasts. Thank you for a truly memorable getaway.

Everything was wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, children and I recently stayed at Sans Souci and it was GREAT! Anneliese and Bill are wonderful hosts, the accommodations are beautiful and the gourmet breakfasts were fantastic. This was just the break we all needed. We had fun kayaking and paddle boating from their cove. We played miniature golf and ate fudge. We went boating one day and played games. We had a fire in their fire pit and made s'mores. So much fun....I can't imagine a better vacation. Thanks Bill and Anneliese!

Awesome stay!

This is the hidden treasure of SML! The hosts are an amazing couple who clearly have a love for SML. We left a few pounds heavier due to the incredible breakfast made by Anna! Everything was so delicious! Bill was an excellent tour guide with abundant amount of information regarding lake life. We can't thank them enough for making our little weekend trip so memorable!
