Dauphin Island is a great place to spend vacation, it has plenty of things to do but without the big crowds that hinder you in other places. Only 30 miles from mobile.
There are great restaurants and pubs, the white sandy beaches are perfect for relaxing, fishing, or a good game of volleyball, kayaking, deep sea fishing and boating, bird sanctuary, estuarium, Fort Gaines, ride the ferry to the other side of the bay for entertainment, biking, etc...
Our stay was good. The house was nice and pretty quiet for being a side-by-side rental. We rarely heard any noise f/ our neighbors even thought there was like 11 of them and 2 dogs. The beach was only a short walk and was pretty quiet and not crowded. It's a short beach but worked for us. Overall is was a good stay and we were happy with the week. There were a few things that could have made it better though. The WiFi didn't work when we got there and we found out the router is in the adjoining unit and our rental company had no way of fixing the issue because the adjoining unit is run by a separate company. We were told to ask the neighbors to reboot the router. Turns out they had been trying to get it fixed and finally did on our second day, just a weird setup. We had no grill when we got there and had to go pick up one at the office. We found a couple dead roaches, but nothing too repulsing. The AC was an issue upstairs because they asked that we not turn it colder than 75 which is too hot for sleeping upstairs. And to turn it to 80 if we are gone all day. We thought that was a lot to ask for people on vacation. Maybe a better AC unit is needed??
This house is great, but these pics are of the West side. The East side is not as nice. We loved the layout, it was great for my family which included young kids so we all slept downstairs and the grandparents got the master suite upstairs. It is also very open and "airy". Lots of windows so you can see right out to the ocean. The linens and furniture are very worn. Bring your own cleaning supplies because you'll need to clean before letting your family settle in (the cleaning crew didn't do such a good job). Also, there is NOT a sleeper sofa upstairs on the East side so you don't have as many beds as advertised. All of the nice porch furniture is on the West side. The East side just has a couple of plastic chairs. Its not right on the beach (you have to cross the street) and there really isn't much beach. The beach is long, but very narrow. However, the beach wasn't crowded and my family enjoyed being on the beach every day we were there. Saw dolphins from the beach several times! Its also in a very quite and area. We didn't have a problem with noise. We will definitely be coming back to Dauphin Island, but would either stay on the West side or look into a different place to stay.
Our stay was super. The Dunes West condo is nicely furnished and decorated. Even though it is not right on the Gulf, we still had a nice view from our porch. If we ever get back to Dauphin Island, we would definitely try to stay there again. The whole island is quiet and very laid back at least around the first part of April when we were there. We have already recommended this condo to our friends that are considering going down.
