Mdina • Casa Tesoriere • 500 Y.O. Noble Palazzo • Stay in Silent Walled City
Summary: Stay at Casa del Tesoriere — an extraordinary 500-year-old palazzo inside the Silent City of Mdina, home to Malta's wealthiest families. Enjoy authentic character, beautiful architecture, and Mdina’s unique calm at this remarkable property.
Perfect for family stays or a grand getaway, this historic gem offers elegant living, spacious rooms, a peaceful courtyard, and a repurposed pond. Widely popular with tourists and one of the most picturesque properties in Malta.
Property Description: Casa del Tesoriere is a rare, fully detached noble palazzo in the heart of Mdina — Malta’s ancient capital once home to the island’s wealthiest families. Mdina is a fortified medieval city of just 300 residents, one of Europe’s best-preserved walled towns, famous for its quiet charm and mix of medieval and baroque architecture.
This historic palazzo sits alone in Bastion Square — a unique location offering unobstructed views and total privacy. Typical of Malta’s grand heritage homes, parts date back to the 14th century, with later additions from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Lovingly renovated over the past three years, Tesoriere now comfortably hosts up to 10 guests in 5 elegant bedrooms. It’s ideal for large family groups, retreats, or special team stays.
Inside, you’ll find an entrance hall leading to an Art Nouveau dining room and a fully equipped kitchen. The ground floor includes an ensuite double bedroom (air-conditioned), a conservatory-style dining area, and direct access to a large private garden centred around a shallow, repurposed pond — perfect for cooling off on warm days.
A majestic staircase leads to more bedrooms: one twin room halfway up, plus two more double bedrooms on the first floor — both air-conditioned. One has an ensuite and balcony overlooking the garden; the other, styled in Art Nouveau, sits beside a family bathroom with shower and bath. Additional balconies offer sunny spots for morning coffee or lunch outdoors.
The palazzo’s highlight is its grand Sala Nobile — an impressive drawing room with chandeliers, decorative fireplace, bookshelves, and a large table for dining or working, with a charming balcony over Bastion Square.
The top floor holds a final double bedroom and a separate shower room. Please note: roof access is not permitted.
Casa del Tesoriere is not just picturesque — it’s one of Mdina’s true hidden jewels, offering guests the chance to live inside Malta’s Silent City with authentic grandeur, comfort, and total privacy. We look forward to welcoming you.
Guest access: Guests have exclusive access to the entire palazzo, including the private courtyard and hybrid pond area. There are no shared spaces — it’s fully yours during your stay.
Owner interaction with guests: Myself or a member of my family will be available to welcome the guests to the property. We live nearby and are always happy to help during your stay. You’ll have full privacy, but if you ever need local recommendations, help with bookings (airport transfers or other taxi journeys), or anything unexpected — we’re just a message away and ready to assist.
Other details to note: For people that book for a few nights we are happy to prepare a small welcome package with some traditional food and drinks from Malta including a local wine favoured by the locals.
Due to the large size of the palazzo, Wi-Fi coverage is strongest in the living, dining and study areas but may not reach every corner of the property.
The hybrid pond/pool is a shallow, repurposed decorative pond — not a heated swimming pool.
The internal fireplace is for decorative use only and is not functional.
Tesoriere is not a party property — Mdina is a quiet, historic town and we wish to respect its unique atmosphere.
Free parking is available just outside Mdina’s city gates (2–3 minutes’ walk). A non-transferable parking permit for one vehicle can potentially be arranged after the first 24 hours of your stay.
Environmental Contribution (Eco-Tax): In line with Maltese regulations, an environmental contribution of €0.50 per person per night applies to guests aged 18 and over, capped at €5 per stay. This will increase from 1 July 2026 to €1.50 per person per night, applied to guests aged 18 and over, capped at €22.50 per stay. This contribution is collected in cash during check-in. We kindly ask guests to have the amount available on arrival, and we thank you in advance for your cooperation.

It took me a long time to find somewhere to stay in Malta as I wanted a character house- and this was ideal. It was very spacious and filled with the charm I was after. It was on a lovely square in Medina with an excellent icecream shop opposite.
This is clearly a historic property so a couple of the rooms were a bit rough and ready- but my sons loved the little pool and the bedroom at the top of a spiral staircase. The owner was extremely responsive and it was a pleasant surprise to arrive to fresh bread, milk, fruit and cold beer in the fridge!
This house is just a wow from top to bottom.
The house itself just oozes history and has been maintained, decorated and updated in a completely sympathetic manner.
We were a family of 6 (should have been 7 but there was no issue with changes at the last minute) All the rooms were a good size for the whole family, large well equipped kitchen and upstairs salon.
The bedrooms were a good size with fabulous bathrooms all round, and plenty of towels.
The garden was a complete oasis in the middle of the city and the little pool was perfect for cooling off. Don't expect to be bombing or floating on your lilo. but it was still perfect for us.
The location cannot be beaten for access to restaurants, bars and ice cream shops. Not to mention all the historic sites within Mdinas walls.
The hosts are fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for them. Joanna even managed to arrange a car pass at very short notice. Andrea was a complete oracle on all things Mdina.
Thanks from all of the family.

Why they chose this property
Living in Mdina is comparable to residing in an open air museum. It is a perfect location for those who enjoy culture and for those who would truly like to experience residing in this magnificent city steeped in history where everything is within walking distance.
What makes this property unique
Palazzo del Tesoriere is one of the most impressive buildings in Mdina. It is the only detached home in the city, enjoying a position of prominence in Bastion Square.
Its location cannot be emphasised enough - it is situated WITHIN the walled city of Mdina (not in other towns such as Rabat, Bahrija, Mtarfa or Mosta nor in the outer-limits of Mdina). This is quite a rarity as there are very few opportunities for tourists to live and reside within Mdina. Our location in the 'Silent City' of Mdina is unrivalled compared to many other available properties that advertise themselves as located in Mdina, when in fact they are outside the city gates of Mdina.
