Overview

About the property

4 bedrooms, 3 ensuite baths, one half bath, resting in a quiet wooded space

This gracious townhouse is tucked away in the heart of the village. It contains 1540 square feet of living area, complete with a full length deck overlooking the River Finnehy, and a fine garden between. An ancient, beautifully designed drystone bridge, known as the Cromwell Bridge, is in full view of this highly acclaimed property. A carefully tended Druid stone circle, predating Stonehenge by 2000 years, is around the corner and up toward the end of Market Street, a pleasant ten minute walk rewarded with quiet moments contemplating the ancient stonework and the hardy folk who built it.

Stoneybrough boasts solid Burmese teak woodwork, wall to wall hotel grade wool carpeting throughout, beveled glass French doors and other design and decorating touches you'll find nowhere else. Guests enjoy free WiFi along with Sky TV in the lounge, dining room, and the master suite as well. A stereo radio/CD player with a variety of mostly Irish music—to put you in the mood— is on the bar next to the kitchen. We challenge you to put on “Galway Girl” by The Kilkenny Boys and not sing along!

Two sculptured marble fireplaces provide warmth and comfort, one with a classic Liscannor stone hearth. You'll enjoy power showers, powerful built-in hair dryers, and a gas grill on the deck. A state of the art Apple iMAC computer, a Bluetooth-enabled entertainment system, WiFi, a fully equipped kitchen and private off street parking round out the amenities. For a second car, a free public car park is found just across the footbridge.

Stoneybrough furnishes locally made, all natural non-allergenic guest soaps and luxurious robes for all our guests. The cook will find everything needed, right down to alderwood planks for those freshly caught salmon filets on the grill and a DeLonghi cappuccino/espresso machine for your pleasant, tranquil mornings on the deck.

Befitting the honor of achieving VRBO/Homeaway’s coveted “Premier Partner” level, we proudly feature fine Boll and Branch linens on every bed. At Stoneybrough, you’ll find American comforts you’d expect, but with an Irish accent.

Along with carefully chosen period art and antiques, you'll notice a decorative battle sword mounted on a wall opposite the kitchen, and a genuine Irish drum called a boudran'. These symbolize the great paradox of Irish civilization: their fierce, warlike history melded with their fun-loving, lively and charming musical traditions.

Just a few doors away from Stoneybrough you'll find The Bookstop Cafe' where you'll be tempted by warm scones fresh from the oven daily, and Olga's marvelous soups and quiches for lunch, infused with superb cheeses from her own farm. Pull down a book from the hundreds on hand, have some tea, and read awhile.

A short stroll takes you to the heart of downtown, with the finest restaurants, pubs, live music, and busy shops and galleries for which Kenmare is justly famous. Two five-star hotels provide fine cuisine as well, along with luxurious spa experiences judged by Fodor's as the best in Europe.

Kenmare Golf Club, with beautiful views of Kenmare Bay is only a short walk away. The Ring of Kerry course overlooking Kenmare Bay and the majestic mountains beyond is only a ten-minute drive.

You'll also find Kenmare centrally located for many of the finest golfing experiences in Ireland: the Ballybunion, Waterville, Beaufort, Dooks, Glengariff, Old Head, Tralee and Killarney courses are all within reasonable driving distances.

Kenmare is at the foot of the Ring of Kerry, the most popular travel destination in Ireland. There you'll find breathtaking scenery, stone age ring forts, many unforgettable stops and the striking 6th century monastic site on the island of Skellig Michael, (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The island hosted the final scenes in Star Wars VII, when Rae delivers his lost light saber to the brooding Luke Skywalker. A stunning place just an hour away from Stoneybrough. You can even visit a long string of pre-historic fossilized tetrapod tracks on nearby Valencia Island.

A full day exploring the Ring, another on the wild and less-traveled Beara Peninsula, and still another spent on the equally spectacular Dingle Peninsula (Ryan's Daughter was filmed there) will leave you with the most indelible experiences and memories imaginable.

By special arrangement, a private tour guide can customize the perfect day trips to meet your requirements, and our housekeeper, Joanne, is on call to provide concierge-level service throughout your stay.

Returning home, you might whip up a gourmet dinner served on Ralph Lauren Wedgwood china, with the freshest locally sourced ingredients from Roger O'Sullivan's butcher shop and the delightful small grocery just across the cobbled street from Stoneybrough. Feast on local grass fed beef, or fresh Kerry lamb, seasoned and garnished with rosemary picked from your garden. Or indulge yourself with savory alderwood-grilled Atlantic salmon caught just offshore, with fresh dill from the deck planter.

Or not! Take in an evening of fine food, fun, music and entertainment at any of the pubs and gourmet restaurants just a five minute walk away. You'll enjoy the freshest salmon, shrimp, whitefish, cod, and bay mussels, a local delicacy, in every bowl of steamy, creamy Kenmare seafood chowder. And try the famous colcannon potato dish with a bit of rich Kerry Gold butter. Delicious!

Then, stroll home under the stars, falling asleep to the enchanting music of the River Finnehy.

About John Stonebraker

We're Americans, living on a mountain lake in South Carolina, with rental and residence properties in the Dalmatian Islands, Bonita Springs, Florida and now, Ireland. We have two sons and four grandchildren, all above average. We're retired professionals, now enjoying our avocations including musical performance, writing, ocean sailing, travel, hiking and fishing. We’re travelers ourselves, and have come to have strong opinions on what our fellow travelers need and deserve.

The picture above is my one and only selfie, taken atop Skellig Michael, off the Southwest Irish coast. The island was home to ascetic Christian monks during the 4th through 6th century. It's a United Nations World Heritage Site, and the location for the last scenes in Star Wars VII. (Don't miss it! If you book with us, I'll send you complete details on how to get there, along with much else.)

When I was a little boy, my parents admired a fine Georgian mansion on a country lane not far from where we lived. Dad's nickname was Stoney, as is mine. Dad had picked up a little pidgin English in the marines during WWII. He'd say, 'Stoney no can buy that house! Stoney broke! So my parents began calling the place, 'Stoneybroke.'

A 'brough' is an archaic Gaelic word for an enclosure, like a fort or even a walled cattle confinement area. So 'Stoneybrough' is a play on words that has meaning for our family.

One final thing: When you book with us, you’ll soon find that we care about your Irish holiday almost as much as you do.

~John and Janelle

Why John Stonebraker chose Kenmare

We found Kenmare by getting lost. Our travel agent described a B&B he booked for us as being 'at the foot of the Ring of Kerry'. Who knew the Ring had two feet? We were at the wrong foot, and tore through Kenmare to get to the B&B at the right foot before dark. As we whizzed through, Janelle said, 'What a lovely town! Let's stop!' We couldn't.

Two months later, having fallen hopelessly in love with Ireland, and after scouring the Internet listings, our younger son and I took a prospecting trip to Ireland looking for a possible holiday cottage. We pared the best choices down to a manageable few and visited places from Westport, Linnane and Clifden in the west central region all the way down to Kenmare and beyond. What's now Stoneybrough and its unique location stood head and shoulders above anything we saw on the entire trip.

Our charming village is the perfect “home base” for exploring the most magnificent sites and scenery Ireland has to offer. Splendid day trips are easy to plan and easy to execute, once you are armed with the best information. We will help you with everything—details and support geared to your personal interests.

Kenmare has won the National Tidy Town competition several times in several categories and in June 2017 won Ireland’s Best Kept Small Town in a national government competition. As a National Heritage Town, Kenmare’s charm and authenticity are preserved by law forever.

When you book with us, you'll promptly receive our proprietary materials full of tips, sites, side trips, directions and unique experiences you'll not find in the tour guides. Our "local knowledge" is unsurpassed. And we are as committed to the success of your visit as you are.

Lonely Planet lists Ireland as #5 in the Ten Best Countries in the World for Travelers in 2014. We believe we found the nicest property in the nicest location in the nicest town in the nicest county in Ireland. We think you'll agree.

What makes this townhome unique

Why Stoneybrough? Well, Stoneybrough's proximity to everything is unmatched. Instead of driving miles to downtown, you're right there. Yet, you're away from the hustle and bustle along the serene, bubbling, beautiful river, with the iconic Cromwell Bridge just downstream.

Kenmare is a proud, responsibile community. A National Heritage Town, Kenmare has won the national 'Tidy Town' award and won the Small Town category in 2013. The warmth and friendliness of strangers is hard to describe until you experience it. Kenmare folks call those of us who have moved in, 'blow-ins' meaning we weren't born there. But they go out of their way to make everyone feel genuinely welcome.

And here's the magic: you don't feel like a visitor, getting into town in your rental car, finding a place to park, (not always easy), and driving back on unfamiliar, narrow roads, at night, on the wrong side of the road, after a few drinks and some good fun. Rather, you feel like you belong. You're a part of your surroundings, not a casual visitor. You walk home. Heck, you can crawl home! You're connected. The feeling is real.

Stoneybrough is fitted with the latest in technology, new furniture, carefully chosen period art, a 'super king' master bed, deck furniture and even a jaunty beach umbrella for those sunny afternoons relaxing on the deck! You'll lack for nothing. You'll stock up at the many small groceries around town, the two wine shops, and the Farmer's Market every Wednesday for gourmet meats, fresh fish, eggs, artisan cheeses, breads and all kinds of goods practically at your doorstep. Bookshelves devoted to helpful maps, destinations, Irish history and culture can be found in the living room.

You'll find a welcome basket of wine and Irish products from our splendid housekeeper, Joanne, who'll help you with logistics, show you how to operate everything, and answer all your questions. She's available for anything you might need during your stay, and can arrive on a moment's notice.

Kenmare perfect lodging

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have stayed at many places throughout Europe and this has to be one of our favorites. All of the descriptions are right on the money. The owner John went out of his way to make sure our stay went perfect. Even some special touches for my wife and I based on our discussions. There is an extensive amount of background into the property and the surrounding areas that he provided. Joanne, the caretaker was also extremely helpful and checked in on us routinely. We even asked to stay an additional night after being there a few days , and John gave us a special deal. :)

Kenmare is a wonderful small town, and this home is perfect.!!!

Fantastic Setting

  • 5 of 5

The previous reviews captured it correctly - this is wonderful home in a perfect setting. Hard to imagine a better vacation rental starting with Joanne who met us upon arrival and gave us keys and a quick tour. The home could not be more comfortable and has a luxury feel all around. The dual fireplaces were well leveraged over the stay. Made it hard to leave on Friday.

As others have noted, the house is secluded on the edge of Kenmare but only a minute from the village shops and some nice pubs. Hard to beat!

Final note to recognize the wonderful owner - John. He was wonderful to work with through the search process and stayed in touch with loads of valuable tips. Great guy!

Luxurious Old World home in charming Irish village

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Stoneybrough, this idyllic home on the bank of the Finnihy River and located just around the corner from the main square of Kenmare. We weren’t planning on a week, but a hurricane arrived, and we had to change our plans quickly. The owner was incredibly responsive in accommodating our needs, and in every other form of support, for that matter. He was a wealth of knowledge and advice about local sights, restaurants, shops, golf destinations, etc. The house is furnished as a real home, with comfort and convenience outfitted everywhere. Being a couple who enjoy cooking in when we can, we especially appreciated the fully-equipped kitchen set up to be truly functional — even the kitchen knives are sharp! The view out the windows of the river running by is both soothing and romantic (except perhaps when a hurricane is visiting), and the house location at the end of a short lane is perfect for being in the middle of town in two minutes yet still being secluded from village activities when at home. We’ve traveled a lot, and this was the best home-stay experience we’ve ever had.

How lucky to find our home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

Stoneybrough was as advertised and more! A luxury Kenmare residence - check. Gracious townhouse - both the residence, Stoneybrough and John, your host - so check. Well-situated - I can't imagine a more perfect location in the lovely town of Kenmare, double check. Well-appointed - if I get started, I won't be able to stop. Rest assured, you will lack nothing as Stoneybrough provides all the convenience of home and more. And the housekeeper is a phone call away should there be a need. Keep checking the boxes. Serene - the River Finnehy is your very own dream machine ensuring a sound sleep in comfortable beds. And sipping your coffee or tea on the balcony in the morning? A perfect way to start your day. The location in SW Ireland allows for wonderful day trips and Kenmare? I am disappointed only in the fact that I didn't get to enjoy more of the fantastic restaurants and shops - a perfect stop on your visit to Ireland.

This place checks all the boxes. If only I could I'd give Stoneybrough a ten star rating.

Stoneybrough Sojourn

  • 5 of 5

While the word "sojourn" is defined as a temporary stay, I was fortunate enough to book a more extended visit to Stoneybrough and still, it was so difficult to leave! One would think that a small village like Kenmare would stop being of interest after a period of time, but not so! Kenmare is perfectly situated in the midst of the southwest of Ireland with all the beauty that area has to offer. There are so many gorgeous drives and walks that can be taken from Kenmare. Close by you will find lovely villages and bustling towns. There are gorgeous parks and fascinating historical sights around every corner. There is golf and fishing and horse riding and falconry and kayaking or boat riding and on and on. In town there is amazing dining, excellent shopping, and even the Kenmare Carnegie Center for the Arts! So, you have picked the right location and by choosing Stoneybrough, you are settled into the perfect home. You are situated in the center of this lovely little town but you are at the end of a quiet cul de sac with only the sound of the River Finnehy rushing past your back door. The house is also amazingly equipped with everything you could possibly need and even some things you didn't know you might need! The owners, John and Janelle have thought of everything and they have arranged for their housekeeper Joanne to see that it all works! What more can I say except that I booked again!
