About Ellen de Bremond

My husband, daughters, grandchildren and I enjoy this house immensely! We started coming here when the girls were little, they are now full grown with children. We live in Garrett Park, Maryland and love to come to Chincoteague to relax and enjoy the quiet island life. A regular day in Chincoteague for us is going for a bike ride around the nature reserve to the beach, swimming and playing in the water, followed by some relaxation on the deck with a glass of white wine and an amazing seafood dinner,

We love this house and are really happy to be able to share it now with brand new floors, new paint, and many other upgrades!

Ellen de Bremond purchased this house in 1970

Why Ellen de Bremond chose Chincoteague Island

Our family has been vacationing in Chincoteague since the early 1970s. We first owned a house in town on Chicken City Road, but when the Maddox family decided to sell Piney Island, we jumped at the chance to build a little house in the Piney woods. With my own children now grown, we have a new tradition of bringing our young grandchildren here to enjoy the magic and beauty of Chincoteague. While much of the beach towns of the eastern shore have changed quite a bit over the last 40 years, so much of what makes Chincoteague unique and special-- the wildlife refuge for bird and pony-watching, the quiet peacefulness, the 'fishermans-town' feel of Chincoteague, remain the same.

What makes this house unique

Our house is located on Piney Island, a15 min walk/5 min. bike ride from the entrance to Assateague National Seashore. It is close to everything (restaurants, the best bbq place on the island, surf shop, bike rentals, family dollar for essentials) and yet Piney Island is remote, quiet peaceful. There are very few parts of Chincoteague that are this relaxing and mellow.

The house itself is surrounded by pine trees. At night you'll hear the trees whispering in the night breezes and see the lighthouse flashing from across the channel. You are one street from the water!

For kayaking and boating, the Piney Island community has a boat launch right down the road a short 5 minutes away. The Assateague Channel is also about 500 feet (stones throw) from the house, so though you are not right on the water, you are always surrounded by the fresh salt air and cool breezes.

Mid-May Vacation at the Sandpiper House

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great time staying in this cute beach cottage! We loved cooking in the kitchen & eating on the deck. It was very peaceful on Piney Island. We rode bikes & canoed & ate lots of local seafood & produce. So close to Assateague National Park bike & hiking trails.

A great place to stay when you want a relaxing & fun time with your family & friends ! I look forward to returning!

& Thank you Ellen, you are a great host!

Very functional house in a good location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our April stay in the Sandpiper house very much (highly recommend spring in Chincoteague - great weather and almost no mosquitoes).

The house is very functional, nicely decorated and suited our party of six (4 adults, 2 kids) perfectly. The location is great - very close to the bridge to Assateague island, so it is easy to bike, walk or drive around town.

The communication with Ellen worked well. There is a binder in the house with lots of local advice - very helpful!

Nice property

  • 2 of 5

Key not available when family member arrived. Mix-up with getting key. Had to rent motel for first nite as could not get in. Would not rent anywhere again unless lock box provided. Not a good experience with 1 year old child after driving several hrs to get there & ending up having to rent somewhere else for house that was paid for.

Owner's Response: So sorry to hear of this- the key was sent to Patricia in advance along with all maps and directions as well as list of points of interest. I confirmed that all was received only to hear three days prior that she could not find the key in the package. I immediately sent another key by priority mail which I confirmed she did receive. When I last spoke to Patricia she was waiting for her son to arrive and ride with him . Apparently the person who went down first was not the person I rented to!! I had no contact with this person and thought I was renting to Patricia who was responsible for the key as well as the well being of the property. If she has called me( name as well as phone number is listed in information sent to the person to whom I rented our house) I would have been glad to accommodate this group by providing another key when we originally sent the first key but had no idea that they were in need of one I certainly as sorry to hear of this as it has worked smoothly for the past fifteen years.

Wonderful spot

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed at Sandpiper for a couple of years now.... over Thanksgiving week and it's been perfect! It is very nicely furnished and it is situated in our favorite part of Chincoteague. We bike everywhere and you can enjoy both the sunrises and sunsets. Highly recommend Sandpiper.... very well cared for and it is well stocked with everything you need. The layout allows for both community and privacy if you are vacationing with another couple. The owners are wonderful to work with. We'll be back!

All Around Great Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We have had the pleasure of staying at the sandpiper house over the past few years, and consider it to be like our second home. It has a great deal of charm, very cozy furnishings with all state of the art appliances, a modern flavor and an open floor plan. The surrounding neighborhood is very quiet and all of the conveniences are a short bike ride or drive away. The island offers unique opportunities for all family members from bird watching, to put put for the kids, with a nice selection of local restaurants. The owners are most accommodating as they want you to have the full experience, while visiting the island. In addition, we have visited during off peak season and the experience was equally as enjoyable as it was in the summer months. We highly recommend the sandpiper house whether your looking for a family vacation or couples getaway!

Perfect Location, Better Value

  • 5 of 5

The location is close to all ameneties. The place is clean and the price is excellent. The owner is professional and thorough right from the beginning of the inquiry. Also, there is a back up plan incase of mishaps, e.g. locking ourselves out. It was resolved right away, unlike the last place we rented, which was not our fault(electronic lock/faulty code). Their back up plan also did not work and we waited for over 12hrs and had nowhere to sleep. Thank You, Ellen!!!
