We visited lake Almanor for our first time after hearing so much about how nice it is there from friends! We visited Lassen, went bike riding and spent days on the beach at the Rec Center. We were a party of 6 , 4 adults and 2 children. The home was perfect and very affordable for our family. I would definitely stay here again!

more attractive based on photos and the property description than in reality.

We rented this house because the Rim Fire made our other rented house near Yosemite inaccessible, so we had to find a replacement at the last minute. This one was available and looked attractive based on property description on the web.

First the better part:

The house is very clean and there is a nice view of Lake Almanor from the house and the deck.

Now not so good:

There is no real access to water. The property does extend to water edge, but the house is high above and there is no easy way of getting to water. Even if one does take a walk all the way down the steep terrain balancing on the rocks, you cannot swim or even put down a raft. There is no dock and the shore is rocky and very unpleasant.

The house is advertised to “sleep 10”, but there are only 6 chairs to sit at the table and only 2 separate bedrooms. The rest of the sleeping places are in the open areas. One of the two bedrooms is super tiny. It is advertised to have a queen bed, but in fact it is only double and there is just 18 inches of space between the bed and the walls on both sides. There are two bathrooms in the house. One shower is over a bathtub with the shower head at a height of a normal person’s chest, the second shower is a tight and low plastic box about 30 inches square. Both have fans that roar like industrial vacuum cleaners.

There is something strange about the heights in this house as if it was built for very short people: the cooking counter, bath counters, shower heads are significantly lower than normal.

The supply of dishes is very cheap and hardly sufficient even for 4 people. Ten would have a real nuisance on their hands. Cheap finish goes for the whole house. Some inside walls are just painted cement blocks. The house has no air conditioning and very poor insulation. The weather was fine during our stay, but hotter or colder would make the stay uncomfortable.

The house is below the road level. Two driveways down. The first one which is shared by several units is OK, but the second that leads to this unit is bent down so sharply that our car was scraping it. Not to damage the car further we had to park on the shared driveway above the house and had to carry everything up and down. Apparently it was not just our problem – the bent on the driveway is scraped in many places by the previous guests’ vehicles.

The rental agency is also far from stellar. It turned out that one of the main roads leading to the lake is closed on a regular basis during the week days. We

Owner's Response: We are sorry that you did not have a pleasant experience while staying at one of our rentals. We manage a variety of vacation homes and try to place guests in a home that will suit their needs. Typically homes close to the lake are booked solid through Labor Day. I’m glad that we were able to find you a home near the lake on such short notice(called 8/27arrived 8/29).The home is not advertised as Lake Front nor do we claim it to be. This fact was reiterated via email before you booked to make sure you understood the dynamics of this property. The photos on VRBO are actual photos of the home,no editing has taken place. This home is priced accordingly at $220.00 per night;other homes in similar locations rent for much more. This home does sleep 10.That is the max. occupancy allowed by the country club. VRBO lists bed configurations. We do not claim that all sleeping arrangements are within traditional bedrooms. We will check on the claim that one bed is not a queen. We write our desc. based on owner declaration of bed sizes and do not physically measure every bed. As to your complaint about the finishes & quirks of this home,we were unaware that your group was seeking a home with a high end feel. Had that been brought to our attention we may have been able to find you a home which met that need. However it would have been farther away from the lake due to the short notice of reservation & would have increased significantly in cost. Regarding the road closure,this home is located within a gated community. You were instructed prior to booking & again after signing the contract of the procedures required by the country club. You were told which gate to enter & how to pay the fees that they charge every vacation guest. You did not follow those instructions. Had you checked in at the gate & paid your fees,you would not have had troubles gaining access. We are also sorry you feel our service was less than stellar. When the country club called to inform us that they were sending an officer over to the house to have you removed for non-payment of fees,we intervened on your behalf to stop that from happening. We also handled your reservation in less than 48 hours,made special arrangements for pmt,and gave you additional household supplies. Again,we are sorry that we were not able to place you into a home that met your unexpressed expectations. We hope that in spite of your less than stellar experience you would be willing to give the Lake Almanor area another try.
