Rustic Cottage with Dock Overlooking Cape Lookout

Bedrooms 1
Space 800 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 bedroom + sleeping alcove, sleeps 4 adults, 1 bath, large deck, dock

Rustic waterfront cottage with views, deck & dock near east end of Harkers Island.

This family cottage has hardwood floors, ocean breezes, a bedroom with double bed, a pleasant sleeping alcove with two single beds, full bath, well furnished kitchen, a large deck overlooking the water, and a private dock. We're just a two-minute walk to the Core Sound Heritage Museum and the National Seashore headquarters, where you also catch the ferry to Cape Lookout and the barrier islands across Core Sound.

On the uninhabited barrier islands you can walk for hours along the Atlantic shore, picking up seashells, swimming, bird-watching, fishing, seeing the wild Shackleford Ponies, and climbing the famous Cape Lookout lighthouse. Back at the cottage you can fish off of our dock, explore the quiet island, or just relax on our deck with gorgeous views of the lighthouse and perfect sunsets. The historic town of Beaufort is just 30 minutes away, with fine dining, shopping, antiquing and sightseeing, and waterfront docks lined with boats from all over the world. Visit the Maritime Museum in Beaufort, the Civil War era Fort Macon, or the NC Aquarium. Charter a deep sea fishing boat to the Gulf Stream, go sunfish sailing around Harkers Island, bring your own boat or kayaks, or take the ferry to the Cape. Kayak rentals are available near the bridge onto Harkers Island.

Whatever you do, it will be a wonderful change of pace, and you will love having our simple cottage as your vacation home.

About Tim

Owners are three brothers, one a bakery owner, another a college professor, and the third a computer programmer, and our sister, an agricultural restorer in Scotland.

Tim purchased this cottage in 1964

Why Tim chose Harkers Island

The house was built by our parents in the 1960s, having found Harkers Island off the beaten path, authentic, and in very beautiful maritime surroundings.

We have vacationed here ever since, with our children growing up with sand, salt and sunshine, and still coming back for more...

What makes this cottage unique

Peaceful, varied marine ecosystems, interesting local history and culture, great fresh seafood, spending lots of time on the water and at the beaches, sandbars and lagoons, watching the sun set over the water.

Our typical day: breakfast on the deck overlooking the water, taking the boat to Cape Lookout or Shackleford, walking, swimming and collecting shells on the beach, getting some fish for dinner, a glass of wine on the deck, watching the sunset and the lighthouse flash across the waters at night...

Relax and unwind

  • 5 of 5

My stay was 3 days, 4 nights, I found the cottage comfortable and well supplied. I lacked nothing. Daytime temps were in the upper 80s, the window units kept the place nice and cool. The views from the living area and deck are lovely. I was able to see spectacular sunsets. The host gave great, detailed information about the place and island. I had a wonderfully relaxing stay and found the island folk genuinely kind.

Awesome little Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Had a blast catching a lot of fish right off the private dock. Loved the house and the view right on the water and watching the lighthouse at night. Everything was just as what Tim told us to expect. Can't wait to go back again!

We loved Tim's Cabin !!

  • 5 of 5

This place is a dream! It's the perfect place for a quiet, relaxing getaway. We were met by the housekeeper (we were a bit early and just loafing to find it), she was super friendly and helpful with information about the ferry and the area. The cabin is adorable! Cozy as it can be, plenty of room for 4 adults. The sleeping alcove was a hit with our daughter and my mother. The futon with the windows open begs you to nap on a hot afternoon. We only used the AC once, we didn't need it with the windows and doors open. The only time we used it was during a thunderstorm when we had to close all the windows. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. We went to Mr Bigs for fresh seafood and got local, fresh produce. We ate every meal but one at the cabin, together at the dining room table. The dock is awesome, we spent a lot of time there just watching the water, passing boats and the birds. We caught two crabs in a trap, which we released, and saw stingrays (or skates) right off the boardwalk. The ferry is right down the street and will take you to Shackleford Banks or Cape Lookout or both!! Atlantic Beach, Beaufort, and Morehead City are a short drive away if you want to spend the day at the beach or shopping/dining on the water fronts. The whole area is great and we all left very relaxed and dreading coming back to reality. We hope to visit "Tim's Cabin" again in the very near future.

Rustic tranquility at its finest

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was exactly what we needed to get away from it all. It has great rustic charm and takes you back to a time when life moved slower. The cottage is literally steps from the water with an amazing view out into the sound. My wife and I caught trout and red drum from the pier. The cottage was clean and had everything we needed with plenty of linens and a fully-stocked kitchen. It is ideally located for day trips to nearby Beaufort, Morehead City and Atlantic Beach. I highly recommend taking the passenger ferry to Cape Lookout. The beach on the sound side felt almost tropical with its warm, shallow turquoise waters. The Core Sound museum is also within walking distance and a great place to learn about the local history.

Finally a Cottage with Character & Personality

  • 5 of 5

I truly loved this place. It had its own unique story to tell. Nothing fancy, yet everything I needed: a beautiful Westward view; a deck with native brush and oaks surrounding to entice the birds right in close; daybeds right up at the double hung bay windows looking over the sound; and wonderfully equipped kitchen. The longer I was there the more questions I had about the islands, boating, fishing and the locals. Many of these questions were quickly answered by the owners' collection of books. Everywhere I looked there were signs of days gone by from the shelling house next door to the humble construction of this sound-side, rustic cottage. Can't wait to get back and explore some more.

Wonderful Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved this cottage for our vacation! The location was right ON the water, which made it breezy and cooler on the water side of the house. We enjoyed the openness and views with the wrap-around windows. We were there for the 4th of July and could watch several fireworks shows in the distance from the deck or the main room. Everything worked fine...AC, Internet, etc. The location was great for biking, photography, and going to Shackleford Banks. Reasonably easy/quick to get to Beaufort as well. We hope to return to this "magical" cottage!
