About the property

Apartment, 1 Bedroom, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2)

Located only steps away from the daily farmers' markets and the shops and restaurants of Aix-en-Provence, in the heart of the Historic Center and off of one of the most active and beautiful squares of Provence, this Town house apartment in a former mansion features Classic style of elegant French town living, absolute calm, unobstructed garden views and a generous and wonderful layout. A truly rare find in a medieval city where light, quiet and views are very difficult to come by! With southern and western exposures, over 12 foot high ceilings, original 'tomettes' or Provencal tiles, this newly renovated property will provide a sophisticated and elegant oasis from the active hustle and bustle of town. Enter the property off the square, through the landmarked door and immediately find yourself surrounded by the peace, coolness and calm of the gardens (an elevated portion of which is not accessible). Upon entering the former mansion, walk up the large stone staircase to the second floor and enter the apartment. You will find yourself in the dining area, with an open kitchen featuring dishwasher, four burner induction cook top, oven, refrigerator and freezer, microwave, new utensils and top-grade cookware. The kitchen is fully equipped (toaster, coffee maker, etc.) and if you have special needs for baking, etc., please let me know!

To the left of the dining room is the living room, featuring its high ceiling and Art Deco chandelier, garden views, decorative fireplace, fully equipped entertainment center, a mix of antique and art-deco furnishings and off to the side, a bathroom, with a toilet, sink and shower. The living room has a door and can be closed off to give privacy to anyone enjoying a siesta on the sofa. To the right of the dining room, is the bedroom, with its high ceiling, authentic Art Deco chandelier, antique furniture and artwork from the region. The bed is a custom designed hand forged iron creation by a local artist and hosts a queen size mattress and box spring, fine quality linens from the US, down comforter and pillows. In front of the bed is a hand forged iron bench to sit and read from while looking out onto the surrounding gardens. Off to the side of the bedroom is the attached 'retro-style' master bathroom with marble floor, tiled shower, toilet and pedestal sink featuring amenities such as towels, hairdryer and heaters.

The property evokes the feeling of Grand French town living and features the very best of antique French and Provencal decor along with all the amenities for a comfortable stay - whether you stay for a long or short visit.

This property is not handicap accessible.

Pay, secure parking is literally only steps away - though a car is not needed for a stay in Aix-en-Provence! The town is mostly pedestrian and the infrastructure for visiting the surrounding areas is excellent.

The property is also located only steps away from the world renowned Spa located on the site of the ancient Roman Thermal Baths.

About Holly Poirier

I've been living here and welcoming the traveler to Provence since 2001. A former New Yorker, I became enchanted with the region like so many others but had the opportunity to make my dreams come true with my first home in the Luberon. Since then, I've added the apartments to my list of favorite places on the planet. I too spend many joyous times in these properties, so I make sure they are comfortable, well maintained and reflect the spirit of the region I love.

Holly Poirier purchased this apartment in 2011

Why Holly Poirier chose Aix en Provence

Perhaps only someone who has never visited Aix-en-Provence might ask the question 'why buy here?'. A friend once commented - 'you no longer take vacations since it seems staying in Provence is enough of one for you'. Please do come and experience the area for youself. You will understand.......

What makes this apartment unique

This property, located in a former mansion and surrounded by gardens, is a truly rare find in the center of town. It provides the best of both worlds - all the fun and convenience of being right in the center of town with the peaceful feel of the countryside! This three-hundred year old apartment has been completely renovated with every modern amenity and ultimate comfort.

Wonderful spot!

This impeccably kept apartment is perfectly located in the heart of Aix en Provence and allowed for an easy walk throughout the old town. Holly is an excellent host and attentive to our every need before and during our stay. Quite simply, we loved this spot.

My best decision of the visit to Aix was renting this apartment. Not only is it well equipped and very clean, but also Holly and Jon have preserved authentic Provencal architectural details that make it very special. The garden space is a real luxury in the heart of town. It's like being in the countryside, yet actually only yards from all the amenities. The great kitchen allowed me to prepare any menu with the fruits of the market. Holly was very hospitable, encouraged me to call her with any questions, emailed after the first night to be sure everything was OK, and even helped me arrange some transportation details on departure. Could not ask for more!

A real gem

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for four fabulous weeks over August and September 2014. The apartment has everything you could possibly want for a great stay. It is well-appointed, well-located and Holly and Jon could not have been more helpful. Holly has ensured the apartment is comfortable by refurbishing it both tastefully and with the best of appliances and fit-out. The apartment is right in the centre of the old town. A walk out of the gate sees you in Place des Cardeurs, with its wide variety of restaurants, and at the end of that is the town hall square and the daily markets. A seven minute walk and you are on Cours Mirabeau. Aix-en-Provence is a pretty and vibrant town and is itself within one to one and a half hours of the many lovely towns in Provence and the coast. Holly’s place is a real gem.

A perfect apartment in a pefect location!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second trip to Aix and our second stay at Holly's. It doesn't get any better! The apartment is every thing as described. Holly has done a great job in decorating the apartment. It was clean and well outfitted.

The location couldn't be better. It's just steps from excellent restaurants yet very peaceful.

Holly was most congenial and followed up during our stay to ensure everything was in order. A perfect host.

Perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Heidi's apartment for ten nights in early Fall, just as the tourist season was coming to a close (a great time to visit Provence). Not only was it spotless and appointed with everything one could ask (dishes, glassware, guidebooks, linens, good lighting, comfortable furniture) but it was the most tasteful decoration I've seen in a rental, a lovely mix of art deco and contemporary design. The location is absolutely perfect, located on one of the nicest old squares in the historic part of town but set back through a quite courtyard. The square is filled with restaurants (I recommend Just En Face) and the very next square over, just steps away, is a small, picturesque daily farmer's market that expands to a full-range market twice a week. You can get up in the morning, collect croissants and fresh fruit and cheese, and head back home for a sumptuous breakfast. There is a reasonably priced city parking garage a few blocks away, with a terrific butcher shop on the way there (they must have had ten kids of pate). There's also a nearby store, just outside the historic district, that sells nothing but frozen foods with every imaginable French specialty-- kind of fun to experiment with if you want to eat in. Heidi was a gracious host and answered all our questions, and had many good recommendations for us. Music lovers: check out the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud and see about free or modestly priced concerts at their beautiful concert hall, within walking distance.

I can't imagine wanting to stay anywhere else if we return to Aix.

A wonderful way to enjoy the charm of Aix

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in this unique apartment. While in the very center of the historic district, the quiet1 apartment was serenely set back in a garden. It was so well equipped and comfortable that we thoroughly enjoyed the time spent in it. Just outside were many restaurants and the markets. Although we are 78 and 83 we were able to walk did not need a car and saw so many parts of the city. Holly was a wonderful hostess and always available to answer our questions. If we were to return to Aix we would love to stay there again. In fact we miss it now.

Car: not necessary

Aix-en-Provence offers world class music and entertainment with its yearly international festivals and provides a picturesque and easy-to-navigate town from which to explore the region. From Aix-en-Provence you can easily visit the cities along the Cote d'Azure (Nice, Cannes, Marseille) the towns of Arles and Avignon and the small Provencal villages in the Luberon. Many guests have commented on loving the access to all the sites in Provence, but loving more so the return to the picture postcard town of Aix. The city center is mostly 'pedestrian only', is entirely walk able and offers every service imaginable, including English language movie theatres. Pay parking is available steps away from the apartment. for those wishing to rent a car.
