About the property

2 bedroom Lake Superior Shoreline Cottage W/Specular Views Accommodates 6

FRESH. MODERN. CHARMING.

This enchanting all-season cottage is only 25 minutes South of Thunder Bay and 1 hour North of Grand Marais, Minnesota. It is a close "escape" for those living in or near Thunder Bay and beacons to those who have ventured only as far as Grand Marais. The Cottage is a peaceful place for all in need of quiet reflection in nature's amazing canvas.

NOTE: RATE SCHEDULE IS IN CANADIAN DOLLARS. U.S. guests receive a substantial discount due to the strong US Dollar. Please contact owner for rates in USD.

A spectacular and scenic road trip meandering along Lake Superior's famous North Shore coastline from Duluth, Minnesota is acclaimed "one of the most scenic routes" in the United States. But the scenic drive does not end in Grand Marais! Continue North only 25 minutes to the US/Canadian boarder to embrace and experience a mountainous, rugged topography with AMAZING views of Lake Superior dotted with its islands and inlets -- not seen on the USA side.

The cottage is ideal for the business traveler working in or near Thunder Bay preferring a view of majestic Lake Superior vs. a hotel room. Quality wireless Internet is provided allowing you to truly work "remotely". Mobile phone connection in the area is excellent.

The hot tub/spa is located on the front deck overlooking Lake Superior and "open" year-round. Relax in the warm water as the sun rises or sets and in-between sunshine, moonshine, raindrops or snowflakes. A perfect place for amazing star-gazing and viewing Northern Lights.

A new propane fueled BBQ grill is located on the front deck.

Perhaps the "north shore" experience is complete with toasted marshmallows over a lakeside campfire? It is your decision but regardless a fire pit down a meandering path overlooking Lake Superior awaits. The lower deck, which literally "hangs" over the lake has shoreline access. It is the perfect place to enjoy panoramic "Superior" views, launch a kayak or enjoy a shoreline bonfire.

Two private bedrooms offer comfortable beds, fine linens, ample closet space, dressers and flat screen televisions with satellite access. Both bedrooms are tucked quietly away from the main living area and close to the main bathroom.

The living area hosts an 'open concept' floor plan and a (truly) comfortable queen sofa bed and chaise lounge, which are convenient for additional guests to slumber.

A large flat screen television hosts quality satellite, DVD player, and a large selection of DVD movies for guests to enjoy. A stereo system with CD, MP3, Bluetooth, FM/AM radio is available for guest use. There is also a selection of CD music of various genre.

Various card and board games are also provided.

The bathroom hosts a bath/shower combination with hand held shower option, grab bar and terrific water pressure! Shampoo, conditioner & body soap are provided.

The kitchen is recently updated and fully equipped. Plenty of cook and bake ware, dishes, table settings, napkins, paper towels and variety of spices are available for guest use.

Thunder Bay hosts an International Airport just 25 minutes from the cottage allowing people from all over the world to visit this special place on earth.

WELCOME AMERICANS!

For those from the U.S.A. who have not yet ventured past Grand Marais, MN -- what are you waiting for with your strong dollar? Experience this spectacular terrain and adventure just across the boarder. The Cottage is only 1 hour from Grand Marais and the strong U.S. dollar provides significant savings to U.S. citizens.

Note: Passports are required at the U.S./Canadian Boarder Patrol.

I could go on and on about the 'Superior' views and spectacular setting of this charming Lake Superior cottage...however with no less than 100% 5-star guest reviews? My treasured guests have already said it all.

The Cottage is available YEAR-ROUND. Remember to please reserve your requested nights early for the popular summer months. The Cottage is also available in winter! Experience this winter wonderland and an abundance of local activities close by. Excellent alpine and nordic ski trails, ice climbing and local winter festivals embrace this not-so-quiet time in the North.

The Cottage & "Spirit of Gitche Gumee" awaits your visit. Welcome.

About Carolyn Nelson

I take great pride keeping the cottage fresh and updated and tend to the smallest detail. I am very particular when it comes to cleanliness. I personally work at the property to insure the high standard is maintained. It is truly my pleasure to share this incredible place and space with you.

I personally love exploring the woods by XX ski and hiking. I have the utmost respect for the power & beauty Lake Superior beholds, spirit of Gitche Gumee; the nature, serenity and magic surrounding the cottage and animals who also call this place home.

I enjoy traveling and believe it broadens ones perspective of the world and teaches tolerance, respect and understanding in regard to cultures and people.

Thank you for being my guest. I really look forward hosting you.

Why Carolyn Nelson chose Ontario

This spectacular place has brought to me, friends, family and guests many cherished memories, healing escapes & heart-felt adventure. This is truly one of my favorite places in this world.

What makes this cottage unique

Thunder Bay is a wonderful cultural city growing in business, economy and population. It also hosts an International Airport. The city and airport is only 25 minutes from the cottage where you can find quality stores, fresh meat, fish & produce and fantastic restaurants. There are many cultural events, festivals & adventures in and around Thunder Bay, which is so rich in history.

Of course my favorite place is residing at the cottage overlooking the ever-changing magnificent Lake Superior, but I also appreciate the convenience of having a city close by.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Heather & I very much enjoyed our stay at your beautiful lake house where we celebrated her birthday.

Our first morning here started foggy but after lunch the mist burned off the lake to present us with an afternoon of brilliant sun.

We love the decorative touches in each of your rooms. You have a great eye for style.

The night visits to the campfire allowed us to stare at the stars, listening to the calming surf, and to look up to the warm, inviting hilltop cottage.

We loved the hot tub the best!

We will be back again. Thanks for the excellent hospitality!

Outstanding location, clean and stocked with everything you need!!

  • 5 of 5

We have used VRBO and Homeaway for every stay when we vacation. I can tell you that Carolyn's property is right at the top of our list and we will certainly be coming back. She doesn't leave out a detail and provides everything you need to have a perfect getaway! The area is breathtaking and trails provide a lakefront walk or a Mountain top view of Lake Superior. We saw bear, deer, and even a tame fox that came right up on our deck.

We would recommend this location to everyone. If you are coming from the US the currency exchange is favorable right now so you can make your money stretch farther. Thanks for a great stay Carolyn!!

On the lake cottage

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here twice, the first time alone & the second time w/family. I had a great time during each mini retreat. The cottage is wonderful for singles who want a quiet place to unwind & decompress. It is also great for families. My son loved the deck, hot tub, all the movies available & the cute way the beds are made up. My mother appreciated the binoculars available to watch the loons on the lake & the different birds around the property. There is a fire pit available for s'more making & another deck overlooking the water w/comfy chairs. I did not use the BBQ but it was available as well. I enjoyed sitting down at night in front of the fireplace & reading. There is a fully equipped kitchen w/all the herbs, salt & pepper & sugar to start a meal. There is also cooking pots & pans & cutlery & a kettle, toaster & knives available. There is not oven exhaust but I just opened some windows & that was fine. There are plenty of towels to use & I loved the extra pillows on each bed. I would suggest a little throw blanket for the sofa. The host was wonderful & responsive to all inquiries & very professional & friendly to chat with. My family had a wonderful time & we look forward to visiting again in the future.

Spring break getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent three nights at this Canadian gem during our kids spring break (ages 5 and 9). Close to many ski and hiking trails, Fort William and Thunder Bay. But we so enjoyed the trail leading to picnic point, the lake and the views from the hot tub that we loved staying at the house and relaxing. So peaceful and every amenity you could need. Lots of towels, extremely comfortable beds, well stocked kitchen, good movie selection and a great fireplace. Carolyn was incredibly easy to work with and very, very helpful! We would highly recommend renting this sweet getaway on Lake Superior!

Beautiful place to stay and relax

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying here for a full month and for anyone looking to get away from stress, this is the place to do it. Both the owner and care taker are very helpful and the cottage has all the amenities one would need. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful and sitting in the hot tub under a clear night sky can wash away all worries and stress! I look forward to the next time my family and I can get up there, it really does feel like a home away from home.

Great family getaway for March Break

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four stayed at Falcon Ridge for 3 nights while skiing at Loch Lomond. The cottage was a great place to come back to at the end of a day of skiing. We loved the hot tub and the comfort of the cottage. The gas fireplace was cozy and the amenities of the house were all you could ask for; satellite tv, dvd's, full kitchen and so many towels and linens! The cottage is quiet, the beds are comfortable and the view of Lake Superior is amazing. You really are close to the water with a dock area overlooking the lake and a fire pit available in the yard. The drive to the ski hill was a bit farther then we anticipated, but the roads are good and the view is great. If traveling here in the winter, a 4-wheel drive vehicle would be a good idea. We visited the Thunder Oak cheese farm (on the way into Thunder Bay) and enjoyed being a part of the rural landscape of this area. Communication with Carolyn was easy with quick replies. Making arrangements for this accommodation was seamless. If you are looking for a quiet getaway/cottage experience, this very clean and well maintained cottage is perfect. If we every travel to the Thunder Bay area again, we will definitely book Falcon Ridge.

Wonderful Stay.

  • 5 of 5

The submitted pictures aren't staged. The cottage is really as warm and inviting as it looks. We stayed in February and brought our adult children as a family get together. There was plenty of room, the place was spotless and well laid out. We didn't cook but it seemed well equipped. We were concerned that winter was perhaps not the best time to be in a remote setting but if anything it made it even better. I wouldn't change anything.

The cottage is "on" Lake Superior only 25 minutes South of Thunder Bay. Thunder Bay offers many tourist activities, parks, farmers markets and festivals for those exploring this historical area.

Groomed hiking trails are just out the cottage door. Pack a picnic and head to "picnic point" for spectacular panoramic views of Sturgeon Bay & Lake Superior. In late summer bring along a pail to collect wild raspberries which abound along the trails. Views are truly breathtaking!

And yes, even in nature we are "connected". Wireless Internet is provided at the cottage and mobile phone service is excellent in the area.

The cottage is close to many adventures and tourist sites including Eagle Cannon, which has the longest extension footbridge and zip line in Canada. Kekabeka Falls, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Old Fort Williams, Loch Lomand Ski Area, Whitewater Golf Course and the largest North American Amethyst Mine.

There are just too many "day trips" and activities for people of all ages and interests to mention here. Additional information & brochures are located at the cottage and on the thunder bay tourism web site.
