About the property

2 bedroom Lake Superior Shoreline Cottage W/Specular Views Accommodates 6

This enchanting All-SEASONS cottage is only 25 minutes South of Thunder Bay and 1 hour North of Grand Marais, Minnesota. It is a close "escape" for those living in or near Thunder Bay and beacons to those who have ventured only as far as Grand Marais. The Cottage is a peaceful place for all in need of quiet reflection surrounded by nature's amazing canvas.

A spectacular and scenic road trip meandering along Lake Superior's famous North Shore Highway 61 from Duluth, Minnesota. Acclaimed "one of the most scenic routes" in the United States and consistently rated in the top 10 world-wide. BUT! the scenic drive does not end in Grand Marais. Continue North only 25 minutes past the US/Canadian boarder and embrace the mountainous, rugged topography with AMAZING views of Lake Superior dotted with its islands and inlets -- not seen on the USA side. Experience this amazing bi-lingual country just across the Minnesota boarder! Bienvenue!

The Cottage is ideal for the business traveler working in or near Thunder Bay preferring a view of majestic Lake Superior vs. a hotel room (hmmm, eh?). Quality, secure, wireless Internet provide guests the opportunity to truly work "remotely". Mobile phone connection in the area is excellent.

The hot tub/spa is located on the front deck overlooking Lake Superior and "open" year-round. Relax in the warm water as the sun rises or sets and in-between sunshine, moonshine, raindrops or snowflakes. A perfect place for amazing star-gazing and viewing Northern Lights.

A new propane fueled BBQ grill is located on the front deck.

Perhaps the "north shore" experience is complete with toasted marshmallows over a lakeside campfire? It is your decision but regardless a fire pit down a meandering path overlooking Lake Superior awaits. The lower deck, which literally "hangs" over the lake has shoreline access. It is the perfect place to enjoy panoramic "Superior" views, launch a kayak or enjoy a shoreline bonfire.

Two private bedrooms offer comfortable beds, fine linens, ample closet space, dressers and flat screen televisions with satellite access. Both bedrooms are tucked quietly away from the main living area close to the main bathroom.

The living area hosts an 'open concept' floor plan. A comfortable queen sofa bed offers guests another place to slumber.

A large flat screen television hosts quality satellite, DVD player, and a large selection of DVD movies for guests to enjoy. A stereo system with CD, MP3, Bluetooth, FM/AM radio is available for guest use. There is also a selection of CD music of various genre.

Various card and board games are also provided.

The bathroom hosts a bath/shower combination with hand held shower option, grab bar and terrific water pressure! Shampoo, conditioner & body soap are provided.

The kitchen is recently updated and fully equipped. Plenty of cook and bake ware, dishes, table settings, napkins, paper towels and variety of spices are available for guest use.

Thunder Bay hosts an International Airport just 25 minutes from the cottage allowing people from all over the world to visit this special place on earth.

For those from the U.S.A. who have not yet ventured past Grand Marais, MN -- what are you waiting for with your strong dollar? Experience this spectacular terrain and adventure just across the boarder. The Cottage is only 1 hour from Grand Marais and the strong U.S. dollar provides significant savings for local fare and adventures! Note: Rate is in US Dollars.

Note: Passports are required at the U.S./Canadian Boarder Patrol.

It is possible to go on and on about the 'Superior' views and spectacular setting of this charming Lake Superior cottage...however with 100% 5-star guest reviews? Treasured guests have already said it all.

The Cottage is available YEAR-ROUND. Remember to please reserve your requested nights early for the popular summer months. The Cottage is also available in winter time so experience this winter wonderland and abundance of local activities close by. Excellent alpine and nordic ski trails, ice climbing and local winter festivals embrace this not-so-quiet time in the North.

The Cottage & "Spirit of Gitche Gumee" await your visit.

Why Carolyn Nelson chose Ontario

This spectacular place has brought to me, friends, family and guests many cherished memories, healing escapes & heart-felt adventure. This is truly one of my favorite places in this world.

What makes this cottage unique

Thunder Bay is a wonderful cultural city growing in business, economy and population. It also hosts an International Airport. The city and airport is only 25 minutes from the cottage where you can find quality stores, fresh meat, fish & produce and fantastic restaurants. There are many cultural events, festivals & adventures in and around Thunder Bay, which is so rich in history.

Of course my favorite place is residing at The Cottage overlooking the ever-changing magnificent Lake Superior, but I also appreciate the convenience of having a city close by.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Heather & I very much enjoyed our stay at your beautiful lake house where we celebrated her birthday.

Our first morning here started foggy but after lunch the mist burned off the lake to present us with an afternoon of brilliant sun.

We love the decorative touches in each of your rooms. You have a great eye for style.

The night visits to the campfire allowed us to stare at the stars, listening to the calming surf, and to look up to the warm, inviting hilltop cottage.

We loved the hot tub the best!

We will be back again. Thanks for the excellent hospitality!

Super clean, serene location, well equipped.

We had a great week at the cottage. Beds are comfortable, views are amazing, and privacy was just right. Everything you would want in a get away was here. Carolyn has thought of everything you would want or need during your stay. The photo's of the of the cottage do not do it justice. We are very picky about where we will stay and this cottage exceed all of our expectations. We really cannot say enough positive things about our stay. If you are looking for a beautiful location to spend some time then this is the prefect location for you. Plus, the fox that comes by during the day is an added treat. There is honestly nothing negative that can say about our stay or our dealings with Carolyn. In a word.....Prefect!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for the 5-star review! I try my best providing a spotless, comfortable cottage for guests visiting this outstanding location. It is not unusual for local fox to stop by and say hello. The fox are so tame it is sometimes easy to forget they are wild animals. Guests should always remember to keep a distance. :) The nature surrounding The Cottage is truly spectacular. I am happy you were able to discover and enjoy it. It was certainly my pleasure hosting you. Carolyn

I loved the great water views from the living areas inside and three seating choices outside. The cottage was very comfortable and nicely designed. We enjoyed seeing all the wildlife .The trails close by were a pleasant bonus. We met some very nice neighbours . One of them offered us some firewood for our fire.

Cosy beautiful cottage with the most amazing views!!

  • 5 of 5

Carolyn's cottage is absolutely wonderful. The most stunning views of Lake Superior and Mink Island. The cottage is very well equipped with everything you could need for a short or ong vacation. We were staying at the end of winter/beginning of Spring. There was still a lot of snow on the ground and it was very cold overnight. The cottage never felt cold and the hot tub on days like we have had has been fabulous. The location is remote by UK standards but being on the Lake away from the hustle of the nearest city, Thunder Bay is just fabulous. I can only imagine what the summers are like here. Carolyn has been a delight to deal with and we hope to return in the summer at some point in the future. Wonderful!

The stay was absolutely fantastic. First, the cottage is even more beautiful than advertised. The views and grounds are amazing and the pictures do not do the interior justice. There is evidence of consideration and thought at every corner.

All the amenities that you need for your stay are provided. Did you forget shampoo? It is not a problem. Everything is available to you from towels, to blankets on the sofa, to all the kitchen accessories you would expect at home. An absolute oasis.

The cottage was impeccably clean and well maintained. I would recommend it to anyone. Further, Carolyn was in constant contact without being intrusive and was immensely helpful. The night before we left, there was a huge snowfall. Though the plow comes regularly, extra hands were arranged, a neighbour offered help with an extra plow, they were even prepared to tow us to the main road if necessary! It did not come to that by any means, but it is wonderful to know that there was all this help arranged without needing to even ask.

We did not venture from the cottage for the weekend. If you would like to, Thunder Bay is 45 minutes away. Also, for those with tree nut and peanut allergies, Chocolate Cow, a nut free chocolatier is 30 minutes away in Slate River. That is between Needing and Thunder Bay. It is a very special treat!

I would recommend the cottage to any friend or family member. Even those of us who live in the area were impressed by how beautiful this particular area is. My only regret is that we couldn't stay longer!

The Cottage is "on" Lake Superior only 25 minutes South of Thunder Bay and 1 hour North of Grand Marias, MN.

Thunder Bay offers many tourist activities, parks, farmers markets and festivals for those exploring this very historical, beautiful, bi-lingual country (French/English). Bienvenue! Welcome!

Old Fort Williams is one of the largest living history attractions in North America, devoted to re-creating the days of the North West Company and the Canadian fur trade.

Guests do not miss Kekabeka Falls! An impressive waterfall deeper than Niagara Falls with extensive hiking trails for all ages and abilities -- just 30 minutes from The Cottage.

Just out The Cottage door guests encounter many marked & groomed hiking trails. Pack a picnic and head to "Picnic Point" for spectacular panoramic views of Sturgeon Bay & Lake Superior. In late summer/fall make certain to bring a pail to collect wild raspberries, which are abundant along the trails. It cannot be expressed enough how truly breathtaking the views!

Of course even in nature we must stay "connected". Wireless, high speed Internet is provided at The Cottage and mobile phone service is excellent in the area.

The Cottage is close to many adventures and tourist sites including Eagle Cannon, which has the longest extension footbridge and zip line in Canada. Kekabeka Falls, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Old Fort Williams, Loch Lomand Ski Area and Whitewater Golf Course. Guests, do not miss the largest Amethyst Mine in North America and bring home a purple treasure.

There are just too many "day trips" and activities for people of all ages and interests to mention here. Additional information & brochures are located at the cottage and on the Thunder Bay tourism web site.
