PET-FRIENDLY WAS THE IMPETUS FOR OPENING
Since opening the cottage in January of 2012, I’ve welcomed more guests than I could possibly have predicted or hoped. It seems that Cavalier Cottage has answered a need for truly pet-friendly accommodations. I could tell you stories about the wonderful four-leggeds who’ve enjoyed country walks here, not to mention their terrific two-legged companions. I could not have imagined that I’d meet such a variety of interesting people when I opened the cottage this past winter.
Nestled at the base of the Charlemont hills and located on a very quiet country road, Cavalier Cottage is spacious, bright and comfortable. The live-in area is simply but graciously appointed, featuring ceiling to floor windows, newly installed oak laminate flooring, a queen size bed with a deluxe Simmons plush-firm mattress, private entrance and private deck. The fully equipped kitchen has an eat-in area with a full size stove and refrigerator (in case you want to cook-in), and a private bathroom. Relax on the private deck and enjoy the country view. For entertainment, you can access Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and Acorn movies & shows, Dish TV with over 200 channels on a 28" flat screen TV, or play classic board games. To stay in touch with the outside world, the cottage is equipped with Wi-Fi. Park your car in an enclosed garage if you need to. Amenities also include a delicious Continental breakfast with Pat’s English scones, a small but growing library, and a CD player with a collection of jazz and classical CD’s.
CENTRAL LOCATION FOR ALL W.MA ATTRACTIONS
Cavalier Cottage is conveniently located to the Mohawk Trail (Route 2) and many outdoor activities: There are great hiking trails, river rafting, tubing, zip line canopy tours, horseback riding, tennis, golf, biking, snow shoeing, rock climbing, downhill and X-country skiing. The beautiful Massachusetts countryside, with its many quaint villages and towns, is also home to a great variety of iconic educational and cultural destinations, including MassMoCa, the Clarke Institute of Art on the Williams College campus, and many more. The area is a four-season vacation destination, from foliage time in the autumn, through ski season into spring hiking time and summer holidays. Time here is sublimely tranquil and peaceful.

I have lived in the Pioneer Valley for the past 15 years. Before embarking on this semi-retired passage of my life, I owned and managed a private career school for cosmetology and esthetics (skin care) education and opened the first full service day spa, both Northampton-based. I have been involved in animal rights and animal welfare for many years.
Since moving to the Charlemont-Shelburne Falls area, I’ve become acquainted with Leslie and Ed Grinnell, owners of Eddie’s Wheels . Leslie and Ed custom design wheelchairs for disabled companion animals and provide them and their care givers valuable guidance and support. I volunteer at Eddie’s Wheels and have the privilege and opportunity to meet many wonderful dogs and cats who seek wheelchair assistance to regain mobility.
Leslie provided me with the inspiration to launch Cavalier Cottage as a place where her out of town clients, both 2 and 4-legged, could spend a night after a fitting for a wheelchair.
In addition, I am a major animal person and there are not very many lodgings in the area that permit pets. And it's always a delight to meet new and interesting people.
After living in NYC and working for the airline industry when I was single and young and then married for a 15 year stint, this venture now provides me much pleasure as I strive to grow Cavalier Cottage!
I look forward to warmly welcoming you to Cavalier Cottage with or without your companion animals.

This area of Western Massachusetts offers great tranquility, natural beauty, many diverse outdoor, educational and cultural activities.
The people of West County are extraordinarily kind and caring.
I share space at Cavalier Cottage with my marvellous rescued dogs and cats. Neighbors and other community members have made me feel very welcome and it just feels so right. I enjoy and value the peace and beauty this area provides me.
I found Cavalier Cottage because I was looking for a place to stay where I could bring my two dogs. What I found was a delight; a cottage that I would happily return to even without pets! Cavalier Cottage is on a quiet road (very few cars went by) with a beautiful garden, located between Charlemont and Shelburne Falls. We had daily lovely breakfast of scones, and the home was one of the quietest, most comfortable, and peaceful places I've stayed in. The kitchen was very well appointed and we could have easily cooked many meals; Patricia was wonderfully helpful. I'm looking for a way to return to Western Massachusetts and stay here again.
If you want to take your four legged friends to a unique and welcoming place, and spend some quality time with your most loyal and devoted friends, this is the place to do it any time of the year - spring, summer, fall and winter.
Patricia Butterfield, the Inn's owner, a dog lover and rescue activist, has done the impossible - offered a pet-welcoming place without the normal "hidden" restrictions offered by other so-called pet friendly places. She has made it simple for her guests, "let your pets do the planning and walking."
I, and my two Scottish terriers, Alexander and Pete, just returned home from a 5-day stay at Cavalier Cottage. After losing my wife of 48 years last year, and her favorite Scottish terrier this past May, it was time to gather my thoughts about my most profound losses - my spouse and her beloved Scottie.
Neither my spouse, nor her memorable Scottie were replaceable, but I have added a new Wheaten Scottie to join Alexander, my current 5-year old boy and, after all that has happened over the past year, my new family is one, and complete again, and Cavailer Cottage is and was the perfect place to begin anew and, yes, we plan to visit again in the Spring of 2017.
Great place to enjoy nature, spend long days hiking and walking with dogs. Nice kitchen area to cook and make meals. Cozy and inviting.
Great place to stay with your fur kids! Cottage met all our needs, and Patricia is a great hostess! Love the quiet, private location yet close enough to town. We will definitely be back.
Our dog loves to go on road trips and while many places say they are dog friendly they have a long list of rules. Patricia does not and it made our visit so relaxed and fun.The Cottage is close to good places to dine and some fun shopping and walking around. We loved it and would go again in a heart beat and Winnie our dog had a blast.
Pleasant cottage with full amenities. Breathtaking rural location. Very dog friendly. Close to local town and activities. Pat (the nice lady that runs this B&B) delivers morning scones and orange juice (yum) and she offers to dog sit too. Cavalier Cottage in my humble opinion a well run, very clean, peaceful, and charming place to stay.
Places like this one are rare. The hostess, the facility itself, and the setting are all beyond compare. Patricia is warm and welcoming, friendly but never intrusive. She thinks of the details, provides freshly-baked scones each morning, and has the kitchen stocked with great breakfast items beyond that. When we hit snags with lodging at our next location, the day we left her place to go on our way, she even got busy and located a great alternative place we could go! We felt like we made a friend, and one we cherish. She cared about us and about all our animals, and was welcoming to them as well as to us. It was clear that she honestly cares about people and their pets, and that she sees them as part of the family just like we do. The place itself is quiet and beautiful, extremely comfortable, and it has a fabulous full kitchen. The setting is incredible, with trees so tall the road there is like a tunnel in places. We even saw a bear on that road one evening! And the nearby town of Shelburne Falls quite won our hearts, with cute little stores and places with wonderful home-made pizza and ice cream. Whether you stay for one night or a week, you will be so glad you went to Cavalier Cottage to stay. We sure are!
This beautiful and diverse area of W. MA offers an array of cultural, educational and outdoor activities. In additon,
