Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, just 15 minutes from Spruce Pine and Burnsville and about 48 miles from Asheville, this area blends art, nature, and small-town charm.
Explore waterfalls, mountain trails, artist studios, and starry overlooks. Visit Penland School of Craft, America’s oldest and largest craft school, or browse local galleries, gem shops, and the National Mineral Museum. Enjoy scenic drives on the Blue Ridge Parkway—though a few nearby sections remain closed for repairs, most overlooks and connecting routes are open.
Hike Roan Mountain, Crabtree Falls, or Mount Mitchell, and paddle the Toe River. In winter, ski or snowboard at Hatley Pointe, Beech, or Sugar Mountain. Savor cafés, breweries, vineyards, and orchards—pure Western North Carolina charm.

DRIVEWAY
+ The gravel drive can be steep for some vehicles that are especially low to the ground, such as a Corvette. The owners have a truck and a typical sedan and have no trouble getting up the driveway. Guests may park on the lower part of the driveway if they would prefer. Four-wheel drive is not required, but if you are renting a vehicle, this option might be a good choice for the mountains - especially in winter.
Located off state maintained roads just 15 minutes from shopping & exploring in Spruce Pine, Burnsville, and Bakersville, and just 48 miles from Asheville, Conley House is a modern mountain gem with lots to do!
_____
ABOUT THE CABIN
+ Conley House was originally 2 cabins with a courtyard in between. The owner, Bill Brown Sr., later turn the cabins into 2 suites with an open floor plan living space between for him and his family. Bill Brown was director of Penland School after Lucy Morgan, the founder, retired. Railings and many other details are original to the home. The kitchen was made by well known woodworker, Doug Sigler. The cabin is filled with natural light in every room with each door framing the view. The home was designed to be passive solar, so it is not uncommon to be able to leave the doors open on warmer days in February. The abundance of light makes the home a cheery place that is very relaxing. We have filled the house with commissioned and original artwork that we have collected over the years. We hope it inspires you!
