About Chris or Peggy Hawes, owners, winemakers and hosts.

Peggy and I have been operating Bear River Vineyards since 1994. I am the winemaker and vineyard builder and Peggy manages the sales and shop. Together we work in the vineyard, garden and winecellars.

Peggy was an art instructor at U Mass., and technical drafting and interior designer for several architectural firms in the USA. I was an antique dealer here in Nova Scotia for 42 years. I finished a second degree at Acadia University in Wolfville Nova Scotia when I was 50.

Our winery development is a satisfaction for us both. It was a gentle learning curve.. 22 years of not rushing it. We focussed on the vineyard for the first decade and opened the winery in 2004 when we had proved that we could grow the familiar European grapes that most people recognize: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gamay, and this year... Merlot.

After 22 years operating a growing winery business, the seasons, vineyard and winery develop a rythm that visitors enjoy as well. We both come from a scottish heritage of homecooking, self reliance and hospitality. We created our environment and our business with an eye to the conservation of natural and environmental resources and responsible winegrowing.

Lovely winery in lovely part of Nova Scotia

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful, tranquil glad we happened upon it. Chris and Peg are great people. Definitely check out the little cottage by the river, and try a latte and almond croissant at Sissiboo Cafe in Bear River!

Two Days in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Criss & Peggy have created a vacationers paradise at their winery in Bear River, Nova Scotia. Our room was very nice, the winery tour interesting and informative, hospitality beyond compare, our every need immediately attended to by our gracious hosts. We enjoyed the short hike down to the river cottage and lounging on the patio behind the winery with our dog. Our hosts provided us with suggestions and information of nearby places to explore and dining suggestions. The wharves and Boardwalks at Annapolis Royal and Digby were very interesting. We would not hesitate to recommend The Bear River Winery to anyone wishing to have a quiet weekend or extended stay in this unique and pleasant place.

A wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with Chris and Peggy for 3 nights. We were made very welcome and thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the winery, vineyard and lakeside cottage. Drinking the excellent wine and watching the sunset over the vines was a memorable experience. Peggy gave us information about the local area and we especially enjoyed our shopping trip to the Saturday Farmers Market in Annapolis Royal. We were very comfortable in this guest room and would highly recommend it for a place to relax and enjoy the wine.

Great location to relax

  • 5 of 5

A perfect location to relax and base our day trips out. Chris and Peg were very accommodating and suggestions as what to view. we travelled the whole east edge of the Bay of Fundy from this location. The room was very clean and well equipped. The 6 nights we stayed were uneventful and nice to relax with a bottle of wine at the end of each day and look into the valley.

Located at the headwaters of the historic Bear River is the town of Bear River 'Village on Stilts', where the tide rises and falls 25 feet.. twice a day! The restaurants, shops, and galleries are suspended over the tidal river on stilts. The winery is 800 yards from the village and is a historic converted 'working horse' barn from the 19th century. Owned in the last century by the Clarke Bros., it was used to pasture and foal their logging teams in the summer months. The hay mow and 4 story interior held 185 tons of hay providing winter feed for the teams that hauled out timber during the winter months from Lake Jolie to supply the huge Clarke Bros clothes-pin factory and sawmill.
