Beautiful cabin just down the road from Campbell Folk School

  • 5 of 5

Just spent a lovely weekend at Whippoorwill cabin while attending classes at the Folk school. One word of advice: arrive in daylight as the twisty one lane roads winding through the hills make the cabin difficult to find. But once here, I enjoyed every minute. The owners invested in quality and it shows. Lovely wooden floors. Stone fireplace with gas heat. And of course, Smoky mountain bear decor. Fabulous cabin!

Awesome Cabin :)

  • 5 of 5

So thankful to have found this awesome cabin in a beautiful setting! Very relaxing place to stay . The inside of the cabin is beautiful, loved the wood floors throughout instead of carpet! Only 2 of us but would be enough space for 4-5 to enjoy the stay. Met the owners while walking around the pond, very nice people! Will definitely keep the info for this cabin and hope to be able to return :)

One negative surprise

  • 3 of 5

This is my second time renting from these owners, and I absolutely agree that they have clean, well maintained, nicely decorated properties. But my first night I found a small, live scorpion in the shower stall (and a dead one in the kitchen the next morning). After doing internet research I confirmed these scorpions are not deadly but the sting is very painful and some people have a severe allergic reaction to the sting. I had never known before that there were scorpions native to NC. So I would recommend not going barefoot, and shaking out clothes and especially shoes before you put them on. One other safety note (I am a retired health care professional): shower seats, including the one in this property, can be dangerously slick when wet or soapy. Otherwise a lovely property in a serene location.

Owner's Response: We do have small scorpions in our area. They are more common in Tennessee, which borders our state line. We do keep the properties exterminated and rarely see any pests such as scorpions, spiders, mice, etc. With you finding a dead scorpion just confirms that the spray is working. Unfortunately, these insects are part of God's creation, so we do have to encounter them occasionally. I hope during your stay that you were able to enjoy the many deer, birds and other small animals that also inhabit our area.

5-star review from a Murphy, NC Native

  • 5 of 5

I was raised in Murphy, NC and moved away after high school. All of my family, both maternal and paternal still reside there. Due to this fact, my husband and I have been traveling back to Murphy on weekends & holidays for about 20 years to visit family. We've stayed in a LOT of vacation rentals in the area over the years. This is one of the best, by far.

Here's why:

1. Price! This cabin is an excellent value for the price. There was no security deposit required and the cleaning fee was reasonable. We've seen places in this price range that were far inferior to this place. This cabin is amazing for the price!

2. Location! I know the Murphy area inside and out. There is the "town area" and then there are all of the beautiful outlying areas that I refer to as the "boonies". :) This cabin has the best of both worlds. It is private, secluded, and tucked back in the woods on a gravel road, yet it is a very short drive back into "civilization". Folk School, hospital, groceries, casino, retail shops, and restaurants are all just a short drive.

3. Modern conveniences! There are areas across Cherokee County including Murphy that still have no cell phone towers or decent internet access. Many rentals have very few to none of these modern conveniences. We usually pick those areas when we want to get away from it all and unplug. This cabin is "away from it all" yet still has Wifi, excellent cell signal, and Dish TV.

4. Easy, breezy owners! The owners of this cabin responded quickly and were friendly and thorough with information.

5. Amenities: Comfortable beds, immaculate inside & out, nice furniture, well-stocked with cookware/dishes/utensils, front & back porch for relaxing. Lots of attention to detail.

Cons: These are minor, but worth noting: Master bedroom windows have cellular shades which filter light, rather than block it. We like to sleep-in on vacation and the sun blasted through the shades to the point that it woke us up early each morning. Curtains over those shades would be a big plus for us. :) Also, the check-out instructions required us to ensure all appliances such as cooktop were clean, but we were unable to find any cleanig products in the cabin. Neither of these issues lowered our 5-star rating, but wanted to note for other renters.

Six thumbs up!

  • 5 of 5

This home fit our needs perfectly for a week at JCCFS. It was very clean, well equipped, and comfortable. We loved the furnishings and decor! It was so convenient to the Folk School and we were able to have some relaxing time before bed and get ready for the next day in class.

It would be a wonderful place for any vacation and we look forward to returning.

Thank you for sharing!
