About Wally & Pat Smith

Both originally from Jersey, we headed south to Northern Virginia, where Wally worked as an air traffic controller and together we ministered as youth pastors as we raised our family. After a fire destroyed our home in Alexandria, we moved West to Warrenton in 1989, and used our skills to design our custom built home on this 20 acre farm. What a great place to raise our children. Today, we are raising grandchildren (9), chickens, and organic vegetables and teach homesteading classes (food/water/fuel storage, gardening, dehydrating food, canning, grinding wheat/baking bread, cheese making, raising chickens, sooo much more!). We so enjoy extending our hospitality to folks who visit the area and we know you will be refreshed and restored when you come for a restful stay. A common expression around here is "'it's not Heaven, but it's a good place to wait." Please let us know how we can serve you better.

Blessings to you ~Wally and Pat Smith

Wally & Pat Smith purchased this farmhouse in 1989

Why Wally & Pat Smith chose Northern Virginia

We looked at nothing less then 100 country properties over a year. Tired and overwhelmed, this was our last farm to consider. Just coming down the hollow, without even seeing the original house (the Cottage), we shouted "this is it!" Pastures, rolling hills, forest, ponds, creek, and barns; every window displayed this glorious creation. We were finally home!

What makes this farmhouse unique

Delightful amenities include: large private swimming pool with towels provided, giganic family play room with HDTV, WIFI, pool, gaming table, ping pong, air hockey, foos ball, board games, toys, etc., fully stocked pond (fishing poles provided - catch and eat policy and no license needed), hiking along Cedar Run River, fire circle, volleyball, basketball, catering, babysitting, horse boarding available. We are a pet friendly home so bring your furry family members.

We now offer skeet shooting for guests age 16 and older. Ask us about it.

If you are planning a retreat, reunion or corporate gathering with more than 24-26 guests, please remember that we have a ELEGANT COUNTRY COTTAGE located on the farm that can sleep an additional 14 guests...in classic country style! See VRBO 565710 for the description of the COTTAGE. We also have our VICTORIAN which sleeps 18 guests. This beautiful addition to the Farm, has a theater room, game room and a hot tub to enjoy. When all 3 homes are rented by the same group, 58 guests can be accommodated.

Amazing Tribute Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

Amazing house. Beautiful game room. Lots of room so that no one felt cramped. If you wanted to cook, there was nothing missing. We needed help they called us back right away. We left something behind and they were gracious enough to mail it back to us. I would definitly recommend this venue to any one with a large party. There is a food store just one mile away. Again amazing place!!!!!!!!

Great spot for a work retreat!

  • 5 of 5

The organization that I work for hosted our work retreat at this location! We had 20+ people and everybody had nothing but kind words about the venue choice. It was spacious, clean, lots of pots and pans, and fit our needs nicely!

Perfect Holiday Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at Hidden Hollow Farm over Thanksgiving. Location was perfect- close to civilization- but once you get on the property- privacy abounds. Wally and Pat were great! Recommended caterers, brought firepit firewood every day, took family photographs- always responsive!

The house was awesome as well. The kids (and adults) loved the rec room- it had everything. The beds were some of the most comfortable ones we have seen at any rental. Too many amenities to list:Keurig, tree swing, fireplace, entertainment system, basketball hoop, etc.

The house was large enough for everyone to spread out- but well-equipped for meal time and after dinner gatherings. The house was clean- it is always a good start to be greeted by a clean house!

The farm is beautiful- we hiked every day- plenty of trails. Our dogs also loved the space to roam and run.

Went to historic Warrenton (a 2 minute drive) which was nice- but we did not venture off the farm- there was just too much to do there.

Even though we came in the fall-and I was a little worried that we would be stuck inside and the kids would be "bored"- there was plenty to do inside the house. We are looking forward to going back during the summer to take advantage of the pool and more outdoor activities.

All of my family members from all over the east coast are still talking about how much fun it was.

I would highly recommend this place- the house and location are great- and there are probably plenty of those on VRBO- but the owners attentiveness and little touches puts this place at the top.

Fun Celebration!!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year in a row of having a large group at The Farmhouse! As soon as you walk in you feel right at home. There are several spacious rooms to sit around and talk or go to the large game room for fun and games. We played pool and several rounds of ping pong. Lots of room for the whole group to get involved in the fun.

The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to serve a large group. I almost felt guilty going through the cabinets but was so thrilled to find everything we needed to serve over 15 people.

I'd highly recommend booking The Farmhouse for family events, business meetings, retreats, etc. The atmosphere can't get any better! Very clean and worth going back every year!!!

Thank you Smith family for sharing your beautiful home and scenic land!!

Very satisfied customer!!

Beautiful grounds. House needs maintenance

  • 3 of 5

My family of 30+, ages 1-86, (we rented the adjacent Victorian, too) were there the first week of August 2016. I collected the following feedback after we left.

Pros:

The grounds are beautiful

Nice, clean swimming pool

Sitting on the front and back decks is great

Lots of seating for meals

Lots of shelving for storage of groceries

Great to be able to sleep so many people

Extremely gracious and responsive owners

Cons:

Kitchen:

Almost everything in the kitchen is old. It's as if someone used everything for many years then just moved

out and left it all behind

The dish washer leaks

Especially need:

Sharp knives

More dish towels

A refrigerator with all the shelves and drawers. And the door shelves need to stay attached to the door.

More mixing bowls

For the number of people the house expects to feed it desperately needs another oven.

Game room:

The game room - a major feature we were looking forward to using - was a great disappointment.

The pool table is badly out-of-plumb and shaky; not suitable for anything but kid-play

Even the poker table wobbles

The air hockey table is barely functional. At a minimum the surface needs to be waxed

The surface of the ping-pong table is bubbled and uneven. We went out to buy our own paddles

Back deck:

Soft spots in several planks will present as holes, especially to older people

A plate screwed to the surface is a tripping hazard

The entire surface of the deck is slippery. Several people - kids and adults - slipped or fell walking from

from the pool to the back door

The area around the grill is especially slippery (food oils, etc)

Summary:

We had a great time at Hidden Hollow and we'll consider going back because it's close to family. But if you've

stayed at other VRBO properties don't expect this one to meet the price/value standards you might be

accustomed to.

The harmony of ponds, woods, rolling hills, and homestead atmosphere make this a wonderful place to visit. There are great views from every window! Everyone will enjoy the hiking trails along the river and through the woods. Also, here in horse/wine country, we have over 22 wineries to tour, local farm markets to shop at, and Old Town Warrenton to discover.

SPECIAL EVENTS

If you would like to have an intimate event on the Farm, we welcome groups of 70 (maximum). We have recently created a country event setting on the bluff of the pine forest that overlooks the pond and the entire Farm. There are picnic tables and additional seating for up to 70 guests. I'm sorry, but we can not accommodate tents or portable toilets on the property, however, this small event will allow guests to comfortably function and flow in the Farmhouse in case of inclement weather. Our fee for your special event is 1500.00 for up to 5 hours up to 10 pm in the evening. Picnic tables, party lights and additional parking

are included.

We have a party fee of 200.00 for rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, etc. for any additional guests over the 26 guests staying in the Farmhouse but not to exceed 20 extra people coming from off of the Farm.
