About John Marsala
Always wanted a place for family and friends where outdoor activities abound. Love Utah and it's fabulous National Parks
John Marsala purchased this House in 2011
Why John Marsala chose Orderville
At Buffalo Ridge, you can truly get away from it all. The peace and beauty of this location is without equal. From the house, you can walk into Zion. The Grand Canyon is a 2.5 hour drive, Bryce a 75 minute drive, many other, off the track, State Parks are also close. Springdale has become VERY crowded as the popularity of Zion has increased. During the busy months, April thru October, the parking lot at the West/Springdale entrance becomes full. People are directed to park in town!! The advantages of being on the East side are: 1. Avoiding the crowds in Springdale 2. Having easy access to drive to Springdale for dinner; a wonderful 30 minutes drive through the park! 3. Having easy access to Kanab, another beautiful drive of 35 minutes in the opposite direction. Kanab has the best restaurant in the area. 4. Easy access to Bryce. It is only a 75 minute drive from the house. 5. Easy access to the off-trail hiking of the East/high desert side of the park where you can hike down any of the numerous washes. You can explore areas where few others go!!

An absolutely perfect getaway!
This house is a gem. It’s beautifully and very comfortably furnished with Western-style wood furniture and Native American art. The kitchen is fully equipped. The wrap-around porch looks out on the mountains, and the view of the stars from the hot tub at night is spectacular. The house is connected to the nearby Zion Ponderosa Resort, so there’s also access to all that the resort offers. We really liked the East Zion location. It was an easy and breathtaking drive into Zion National Park, as well as less than an hour and a half to Bryce National Park or to Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. We did some great hikes that weren’t too challenging: to Observation Point from the east side, Bryce, the walk to where the Narrows starts, Wirepass Trail and the slot canyon in Grand Escalante (stop by the BLM office in Kanab for updated trail information). John, the owner, was like a host in absentia. He sent detailed notes on the house and local activities before we arrived, checked in on how we were doing, and quickly responded by email to any questions we had. We've done many VRBO rentals, and John is certainly the most responsive owner we've experienced. My family and I can’t recommend this house and its location highly enough. A perfect trip!
When I reviewed the pictures online and booked the home, I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived that they exactly captured the place. The views from the home were picturesque and it was a short drive away from Zion National Park. The homeowner was very accommodating and provided detailed information about what to expect and highly recommended trails in the park. I would happily recommend the place to my family and friends. It is a trip that we will remember for years to come.
Great home base for park hopping
This was a perfect home base for a week-long visit to southern Utah. The home was perfectly clean and very well stocked. The private hot tub was perfect for enjoying the stars and soothing tired hiking feet. The kitchen was well stocked with all the cooking tools, and the beds were very comfortable.
The east entrance to Zion is about a 20 minute drive from the house (10 of those minutes are down from the house to the main road). Bryce Canyon was an hour and a half. We also visited the Coral Pink Sand Dunes, the town and slot canyon hiking near Kanab, and we spent a lovely afternoon in St. George.
The owner, John, will share his guide to the area when you book the house. Take ALL of his recommendations on hikes, food, etc. Add to his list the Stone Hearth restaurant outside of Bryce. It was one of the best meals of the trip. And the Spotted Dog outside of Zion has an outstanding wine list. Skip Thunderbird in Mt. Carmel. Even the “ho-made” pies were lousy.
There is no recycling at the house, but we found that there were recycling bins in Zion park for aluminum, plastic bottles, and there were two places that had bins for glass. We just brought our recycling into the park with us each day. No paper recycling though — only saw that at the airport. Also, the park had spring water fountains at the visitors centers to refill water bottles, which tasted a lot better than the softened water at the house.
I highly recommend this house as a comfortable way to experience this beautiful land!
Beautiful place in a great location!
We loved our stay at Buffalo Ridge and really enjoyed Zion National Park! My wife and I are definitely going back sometime to hike up the Narrows!
lovely house in a beautiful neighborhood right outside of the east gate to Zion National Park
Totally enjoyed staying at Buffalo Ridge this past week with some friends from the southeast. Very quiet and private with easy access to Zion. Hiked into Zion about 10 minutes from the house. Very fun! Would definitely stay here again. The house was very comfortable and well appointed.
Overall, a nice house, and really well suited to two couples. The hot tub was very nice,!
We visited this area right after Christmas - for 8 days. The property is quite remote (5 miles off the main road, on the “back” side of Zion park), but still fairly easy to get to on paved and maintained roads. The development itself has lots of trails (mostly ATV trails), but some hiking trails as well - and a relatively short hike is available that brings you to the main Zion canyon. The owner was very responsive to questions, and even added some new cookware ahead of time at our request. Overall - a very nice experience. The town of Springdale (gateway to Zion) is in massive road renovations (one lane - w flag men), which provided a major time issue when traveling through town. The park was also surprisingly crowded (the rangers were surprised with the visitation) - more than at the height of summer.
