About Ed & Meshiel Shorter

I'm a retired senior nuclear planning specialist who loves to escape to the outdoors and experience nature. I love the Outer Banks but recently they were excessively crowded and frequently have bad weather and rip tides. So I decided to build a beautiful vacation home in the Shenandoah Mountain.

Ed & Meshiel Shorter purchased this lodge in 2004

Why Ed & Meshiel Shorter chose Shenandoah Valley

We sought to build a vacation/rental home larger than any other, on a large piece of property away from others. This 21 acres of secluded land borders the National forest and faces the Massanutten Mountains. We placed our lodge type home on the most eminent part of the property and named it Hensley Hollow Lodge after the first settlers in this Hollow. The Hensley settlers rest in the cemetery next to our driveway. The cost and maintenance of a log home far exceed other homes, but we wanted to catch the log lodge experience.

What makes this lodge unique

Nestled on the side of the mountains overlooking the Shenandoah Valley, our Mountain Lodge offers incredible unobstructed views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Hensley Hollow. Guests will love the beauty of nature, watch clouds form in the Hollow below, and see deer grazing in the yard and an occasional sighting of turkey and bear. The Hensley Hollow Lodge offers nearly 5,000 sq ft of luxury living area with 4 mountain-view walkout bedroom suites, (each with private decks), 1.5 kitchens, and a spiral staircase to the 1,300 sq ft loft area. Our 23 acre secluded location offers rustic solitude in a park like environment. Relax where you cannot hear another vehicle or person while you listen to the cows, goats, crows whip-o-will, owls and other animals. And the lodge is minutes away from traditional seasonal activities, the Shenandoah River, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Massanutten Four Seasons Ski Resort, Luray Caverns, antique stores, shopping malls and many fine restaurants and wineries. This home has something for everyone, especially suited for family reunions and retreats, with plenty of parking space on our property.

Hensley Hollow Lodge is a secluded 21 acre mountainside resort and is conveniently located 5 miles from Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway, which offers Virginia’s best hiking, camping and sightseeing. The Massanutten Four Seasons Ski Resort is only 20 miles away, and offers snow sports, inside pools, golf, spa with massage and a 100,000 sq. ft. inside Water Park. Massanutten River Adventures provides river trips, artificial wall rock climbing and tours to Washington, D.C. and local vineyards as well the Charleston Races and Casino. The Town of Elkton is 10 minutes away and also offers a large assortment of antique shopping, thrift shops and yard sales. The South Shenandoah River is 5 miles away and has free public boat ramps, restrooms, and picnic tables every few miles. It is excellent for picnicking, bass fishing, canoeing, tubing and kayaking. These picnic pavilions may be reserved through the town website. We provide river tubes, a 16 foot canoe, and kayaks. We have an outdoor fire pit with unlimited firewood.

Hensley Hollow Cemetery: The Hensley family cemetery (1790-1870) is located just at the bottom of our property. (The Hensley’s is the original settlers of the hollow. Benjamin Hensley Sr. and his family lived and died and were buried beside one another.)

Dining: The owners recommend Hank’s Smokehouse on Route 33 West for Cajun and El Paso on the town of Elkton for Mexican

Skiing / Snowboarding / tubing: You can be on the slopes in 20 minutes; 14 trails open till 10 p.m. Tubing is also great family fun, but has to be booked one day ahead. If your little ones have never skied before, consider the Slope-sliders program at Massanutten; you can sign up by phone the day before. They have a staff that caters to getting kids outfitted properly and coached in the basics. It covers most of the day, including lunch. They also have similar snowboard classes. Parents generally have a much better time, when their kids 10 are enrolled in Slope sliders.

Horseback Riding: Woodstone Meadows (540) 289-6152 (20 minutes) and Keezelnutten Farm (540) 269-2227

Hiking: The lodge is 10 minutes from popular Skyline Drive and Appalachian Trail access points. You can actually see the lodge from the Hensley Hollow Overlook. There are a great number and variety of hiking trails just a few miles away.

Caverns: Luray Caverns, a 35 minute drive, is a U.S. Natural Landmark, the largest and most popular in the east.

Other caverns/landmarks:

888-430-CAVE; Natural Chimneys: 888-430-CAMP

Dinosaur Land: A Kid’s Favorite (60 mins.) Large-scale Action Water Park – Summer – Massanutten Resort (20 mins.)

Public swimming: Shenandoah River and Campground on Rt. 33 (10 mins.)

Roller skating: Elkton on Rt. 33 (15 mins.) Cinemaplex: Harrisonburg (40 mins.)

Bowling: Harrisonburg (40 mins.)

Family River Activities / Canoes / Tubes / Fishing: The Shenandoah River has multiple public access points, several of which are right in Elkton. If you have two vehicles, it’s a nice “float” downriver to the 2nd access lot. There are local facilities to rent canoes & tubes as needed. The best local fishing spot seems to be accessible right from the Rt. 33 overpass bridge in Elkton (we see cars frequently parked there and have seen them fishing (and catching) bass, while we have floated downstream.

Antiques: There are several in downtown Elkton, and antique “malls” on both sides of Route 33 between Elkton and Harrisonburg (10 - 40 minutes). There are also signs along Route 33 for local flea markets.

Shenandoah Heritage Farmers Market: Old-fashioned Shenandoah Valley Home-made goods (50 minutes, Fine Department Stores: Harrisonburg (40 minutes)

Even Finer Department Stores: Charlottesville (45 minutes) in Harrisonburg, & well worth the trip!) (540) 433-3929. Also see Dayton Farmers Market

Primitive Folk Art: Route 33, next to Log Cabin Barbecue (10 min.)

Best Mountain House Ever!!

  • 5 of 5

Everyone in our party (6 adults and 2 very small children) agreed this was the best mountain house they've ever stayed in. The house had everything- completely secluded up in the mountains, amazing views from inside and outside, plenty of inside space, tvs in every room, fully stocked kitchen (as a chef, I brought my fancy knives, but even those weren't needed), and a great hot tub. The deck was where we spent most of our time, and saw tons of deer and a bear on 2 separate occasion. After a few days the deer actually became boring they were there so much. House is 15 minutes to food shopping and a few decent restaurants (Ciro's had surprisingly good Italian food), and only 15 minutes to Shenandoah National Park (you can see the house from the park at Hensley Hollow overlook). We went to Luray Caverns, a 40 minute drive (and also amazing), and there is also a cool water park 20 minutes away that our kids loved. 10 minutes of every ride was just going down the mountain, so in truth most places are really close to the house.

All in all we look forward to returning in the future and it'll be hard to top all the amenities.

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to give us this good review. Glad that you did good research on the information we sent you and enjoyed the nearby attractions. Also glad you could see our "friends from the forest". The young bear seems to be an orphan and is not very afraid of people. He has been sleeping in our barn some, and I got within 20' of him two weeks ago. And the deer are getting very friendly. Last week we moved a spare air compressor and extension cord to our "Mountain Shack" to enable our guests to easily fill our inner tubes or their own river toys and other floats for floating the South Fork of the famous Shenandoah River in Elkton. Maps are mounted in the game room. Hope to serve you again! Ed & Meshiel

A fun time was had by all

  • 5 of 5

Location: Great location in the Shenandoah Valley. Close to river access, Luray, hiking trails. Secluded spot with lots of room to explore.

House: Kitchen is well-appointed, cabinets and drawers are labeled which is great for finding things, and there are designated empty cabinets for guests' food which I've never seen before, but is very much appreciated, both paper and dish towels are supplied. Bedrooms are nice, beds are comfortable, lots of closet and drawer space for clothes, all linens are handled by the owner. Bathrooms are nice and have plenty of towels (bath, hand and face cloths). Living areas are nice with lots of games, movies, a pool table, foosball, etc. to entertain both kids and adults.

Outdoors: Again, lots of things to occupy yourself with - a hot tub, kayaks, canoe, stocked feeding station for wildlife, sheds with other items for use, a great deck with patio area below, ample parking for cars. The driveway up to the house looks daunting, but is well maintained and all 5 cars made it up with no problem.

We went to Luray Caverns and the automobile museum one day, and hiked to some waterfalls another day. I highly recommend both, especially the Caverns!

We were a group of 10 adults and 5 kids ranging in age from 14 to 1 and there was plenty of room for all of us and more to spare. The 9-year-old said it was the best time she had ever had. :-)

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to give us that good review. It was our pleasure to be able to serve you at the Hensley Hollow Lodge. We look forward to serving you again. We take all of our reviews and comments very seriously. And we now feel we have corrected every problem that any guest has ever had. We were at the lodge last week upgrading some of our furniture. We replaced a twin bed with a queen bed in the East loft. And we removed the sleep sofa in the game room and replaced it with a futon. We have ordered a new 8" thick mattress for the futon which should make it more comfortable for sleeping than the sleep sofa. And we added a new night stand to the downstairs master suite. Thanks again, Ed & Meshiel

Great place for a visit!

  • 4 of 5

We spent a week here with a total of 26 people. It was a great place to stay!

Cons:

-Yes, the driveway is a little challenging, but that in no way affected our stay here. You would not want to attempt it in an RV or pulling a trailer.

-The sleeper sofa in the game room is pretty much worthless for sleeping. The people that slept there ended up buying an air mattress to sleep on.

-Noise carries throughout the house, so it's not very quiet if some people go to be earlier than others.

Pros:

-Fantastic views.

-Wildlife! We saw deer, bear, bluebirds, goldfinches, and a scarlet tanager.

-Convenient to a variety of activities. Not far from stores for our needs.

-Very close to Shenandoah National Park - we were in the park in about 10 minutes.

-Responsiveness by the owner. Wasps built a nest on the grill one day, and we called the owner who immediately directed us where to find wasp spray so we could use the grill.

-Well stocked kitchen. Two fridges, two washers and two dryers.

-Lots of room for trash outside.

-Jacuzzi was large and comfortable.

The pros greatly outweigh the cons! Rent this place!

Owner's Response: JOHN, Thanks for allowing us to serve you at the Hensley Hollow Lodge. It was our pleasure to meet you and some of your guests. My brother and I commented on what a nice, friendly, and polite group of people you were. My wife and I drove to the lodge this week to deliver a 10'-6" long x 6' wide inflatable river raft rated for 1,200 pounds or five adults. And we did quite a bit of work there. I am sorry if we forgot to tell you that we keep inflatable mattresses in the main floor master bedroom closet and an electric air pump in the Mountain Shack. I did inspect the air mattresses and inflated two of them and put them behind that sofa in the game room. We also had another 20 tons of rock delivered and dressed up the driveway a bit. I also scraped the driveway with our tractor and ensured it was in top condition. I do plan to continue to improve that driveway and expect to finish this month. We inspected for wasp nests again and could not find any active nests. Our maintenance man will continue his weekly inspections. We also performed our summer deep cleaning. And we leveled, mounted and secured our new stainless steel outdoor commercial kitchen sink. I am excited about the opportunities our guests will have at the lodge and on the river. We look forward to serving you again. Thanks, Ed & Meshiel
