About the property

One Bedroom, One Bath Ground Floor Oceanfront Condo

The views from this recently remodeled and upgraded(April-May, 2013) ground floor OCEANFRONT unit are spectacular, with the clear blue-green ocean vista and radiant sunsets over the islands of Lana'i and Moloka'i. Step off your lanai and you are only 25 feet from the ocean where turtles feed in the rocks just steps from the Magic Beach! Located in the Kuleana resort with only seven 2-3 story buildings, enjoy the best of Hawaii with it’s tropical beauty and unsurpassed views. Kuleana is considered one of the most beautiful and impeccably maintained oceanfront properties on West Maui, offering luxurious living in a peaceful, serene setting. Seasonal humpback whale watching is available directly from our lanai using the high power binoculars provided in this unit (or take an even closer look with a Pacific Whale Foundation cruise from Lahaina harbor). In addition to the multitude of sea turtles, other sea life such as dolphins, manta rays, eagle rays and monk seals can be seen right outside your door. The property has two beaches and a sea ladder, all providing easy entry into the crystal clear ocean for snorkeling in the private snorkel cove, surfing, paddle boarding, boogie boarding (yes, the waves are good!), kayaking or simply relaxing in the water. A coral reef exists straight out from the property, enhancing the snorkeling, surfing, kayaking, and boogie board activities. Fishing is also popular from the beaches and the ladder.

This unit was purchased in April, 2013 and completely remodeled as our second home and vacation rental in paradise. All new tropical furniture and decorations have been added to compliment the softly colored walls and insure complete submersion in the Hawaiian experience, with careful attention given to comfort, safety and storage. The top of the line plush firm Cal King bed in the bedroom provides relaxing comfort and support while being lulled to sleep by the distant sounds of the ocean. Although the ceiling fans in the livingroom and bedroom are usually sufficient to pull in the ocean breezes and keep the unit comfortable, the bedroom has a new air conditioner that's large enough to cool the entire 500+ sq ft interior space on those few days in the summer when it's hot and/or humid. The bedroom has ample storage for personal belongings, with a large mirrored closet, mirrored dresser and 15 inch high bedframe to allow storage of large suitcases and extra linens under the bed. The open and well lit bathroom has a large vanity with marble counter/sink and vanity to ceiling mirror, as well as an adjustable makeup mirror. The full size shower with rain glass doors has a built in seat, which together with the ADA compliant toilet provide ease of access for older occupants. The kitchen includes lots of counter space with the built-in island, as well as all the necessary appliances (fridge/freezer, stove/oven, microwave, dishwasher, garbage disposal, toaster, coffee maker, blender), glassware, dishes, silverware, cooking utensils, pots and pans, storage containers and non-perishable foodstuffs for those who want to prepare some of their meals themselves (or at least morning coffee and evening Pina Coladas). There is a small table with two chairs next to the kitchen for inside dining (or working on puzzles or other table based games), but we enjoy most of our meals on the patio table and four swivel/rocker chairs on the lanai. The livingroom has a comfortable queen size sofa sleeper (with 6 inch thick mattress), two swivel rocker easy chairs, coffee table and end tables with adjustable lighting, as well as an entertainment center with an adjustable 40 inch wall mounted HDTV (with premium HDTV programming, WiFi and streaming from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, etc).

The grounds, nearly 4 acres in size, are second to none on West Maui. They contain a myriad of meticulously manicured, lavish vegetation along with paths on which to stroll the property. There is a large, heat-controlled pool to sun, swim, and relax. Barbeques reside at the ocean’s edge, providing an unsurpassed setting for cooking while watching the sunset. There are a multitude of on-site activities to enjoy, including tennis and shuffleboard and ping pong. The resort lobby has extensive library for your reading pleasure, as well as a concierge for booking your luaus and sightseeing trips.

Why pay the high prices for a room in the popular hotels in Kaanapali, Kapalua or Wailea unless you prefer distant ocean views, crowded beaches and eating every meal at expensive restaurants. Our luxurious Kuleana condo is ideal for anyone who wants to control their budget, activities and privacy to suit their own tastes.

About Kerry and Lynne Nugent

Although we live in the Gold Country of Northern California, we have always thought of Maui as our second home. We met online in 2000 and were married on Maui in 2001, but we're still on our honeymoon. We have three children between us and three precious grandchildren, all of whom live in Northern California. Although not retired, we plan to work less and play more, so what is a better place to do that than on Maui. As an expat from Canada, I have met many Canadians who own property at the Kuleana resort or choose to rent here for their holidays. As relatively new vacation rental owners, we look forward to developing more friendships with guests from around the world who share our passion for this tropical paradise.

Kerry and Lynne Nugent purchased this condo in 2013

Why Kerry and Lynne Nugent chose Lahaina

After a wonderful wedding in Makena, we returned to Maui each October for our anniversary and stayed at a wide variety of complexes and locations on this beautiful island (all rented through VRBO). In 2011, after our youngest daughter was off to college, we rented this unit at Kuleana and immediately fell in love with everything about this property. When we were not able to rent this unit in October, 2012, we rented the condo next door. During our stay, we learned that this unit was in foreclosure and saw this as a sign. We proceeded to purchase this property from the bank and had the opportunity to modernize, furnish and decorate it as our second home. Since we will only be on Maui for 9-12 weeks a year, we wanted to share our wonderful second home with relatives, friends and others who want to experience the best that paradise has to offer.

What makes this condo unique

Although this condo is ideal for couples, we added a very comfortable queen size sofa sleeper for couples with one or two children. Unlike the high priced hotels on Maui, this condo offers a home away from home feeling in a more private setting with all the luxuries you could want while vacationing in paradise. We don't consider this condo a rental, but rather our second home that we wish to share with family, friends and special guests who appreciate a comfortable place to call home while enjoying all of the wonders the island of Maui has to offer. The Kuleana resort is ideally situated in Kahana on the northwest side of Maui, with easy access to great restaurants, championship golf and ocean sports from Lahaina a few miles to the south to Kapalua a few miles to the north. We recommend a rental car while on Maui (with free parking at Kuleana) to take advantage of all the beautiful drives and destinations (as detailed in the guide in our condo) on this tropical island paradise.

Amazing place, much better in the ral life. Would come back again and again.

Beautiful little cozy condo. Very clean and well organized. The view from patio is amazing!

We sew many turtles every day. Watched whales and picked up beautiful flowers from the grass next to the condo.

Condo had everything you need, from dishes and sheets, spices, Ziploc's, beach gear. And everything else you have in your own house.

The owners are nice and helpful. It definitely felt like home to us.

Was very sad to leave, if we ever decide to visit Hawaii we would definitely come back here.

Warning: Roach infested property.

  • 2 of 5

While the location is nice we woke up the next morning to dead roaches as well as live ones literally running across our feet while making breakfast. In addition there was a live spring-baited mouse trap within reach of children. I contacted the owner and tried to be allowed to move out and go elsewhere--our vision of paradise did not include a roach infestation or active mouse problem. The amount he wanted to charge me for one night was exhorbidant--absolutely absurd. This was NOT on a whim and NOT our fault. We spent thousands to fly our family out there. He should have been appalled at the conditions and offered us a much more reasonable option. He did offer another unit that was upstairs--but with kids we've learned that being on the ground floor is much easier so we had found other places to stay but could not afford it due to his ridiculous overcharge for one night. We had to spend the rest of the vacation dodging roaches. Oh--and don't think for a moment this place has real AC. The bedroom is cool enough but if you have people sleeping in the other room--it does not reach there at all. My advice--find somewhere else to stay.

Owner's Response: Although roaches are a fact of life in the tropics, the Kuleana Resort does regular spraying to minimize their population and we recommend to our guests that they keep opened food in the fridge or in the provided containers to eliminate their food sources (which unfortunately you didn't heed as this unit required extra cleaning after your checkout). We do see an occasional dead roach following a spraying, but have never seen a live one (nor has a previous guest ever told us they saw any live roaches), especially during the day as they are nocturnal creatures. The mouse traps in the water heater closet and behind the garbage bin are there to catch any mice that might get into the unit when the doors are left open (we have seen one mouse in the past 5 years in this ground floor unit). We offered to move you to our third floor condo which was available during your stay but never heard back from you so we thought the issues were resolved. Both of our units have the best possible AC allowed and we have ceiling fans and portable fans to move air through the units on warm summer nights (and we have locking screens on both the front and rear/lanai doors, so these doors can be left open to take advantage of the cool evening breezes).

Couldn't be happier

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I couldn't get over how happy we were with this condo. Some of our favourite things about this property:

1. The view is UNBELIEVABLE. The pictures don't do it justice.

2. The beach is a 30 second walk from the patio! No water shoes necessary!

3. We saw so many sea turtles. They swim right by you in the ocean!

4. The bed is crazy comfy

5. Really nice shower (something I find lacking in a lot of rentals by owners)

6. Easy check in and check out process

7. Kerry and Lynne send you a list of their favourite places to eat and visit

8. Amazing sunsets!

9. Everything you could ever want is there: towels, snorkeling equipment, boogie boards! You don't need to bring anything.

Overall, you really feel like you're staying in a 5-star resort.

Some things to note:

1. The property is around 45 minutes from the airport and 40 minutes to an hour away from the Road to Hana, Haleakala, Paia, etc. Having said that, I don't think this should deter you from the booking property at all. We did the drive every day and did not regret it. The scenery is beautiful and the roads are fun to drive.

2. Be careful how you park. Even though you are warned not to take up two parking spaces, if your car tire is even millimeter on the line (not over, but on) you will get a warning and potentially a fine. The parking spaces are TINY so heads up!

I highly recommend this property. You can tell that the owners take a lot of pride in it and go out of their way to make sure you have a great time. We had such a wonderful time I actually teared up when we had to leave!

A big thank you to Kerry and Lynne!

Close to paradise

  • 5 of 5

We did enjoy our week at this condo. It is well stocked in the kitchen, bath and beach equipment department. The complex is very nice...beautiful pool, friendly staff and well maintained grounds. The sunsets were very nice and most nights a gentleman would blow his conch shell right in front of our lanai. We also looked forward to seeing the turtles, daily, on the nearby beach. We miss it already!

Enjoy watching whales, turtles and dolphins while sitting on the lanai with a view of Lana'i, Moloka'i and Oahu or relax on the beach under the monkeypod tree 40 feet from the lanai. Located between Lahaina and Kapalua, the Kuleana resort is ideally located close to world renowned golf, restaurants and water activities. A guide to local activities, day trips and restaurants is provided in our condo, based on our experiences over the past 12 years, with activities divided into relaxed, active or extreme and restaurants classified by price (all highly recommended). When staying at the resort to relax by the heated olympic size pool or on the beach, we recommend lunch or dinner from the Okazuya Deli a few block away, where you can get excellent meals at reasonable prices and enjoy them on the lanai. We also recommend a visit to the Farmers Market just down the road every Mon-Wed-Fri morning for fresh papayas, mangoes, coconuts, pineapples and apple bananas.
