Views upstream from the property are some of the peaks in the Wild Sky Wilderness Area (before it was designated a Wilderness Area we supported that effort as a business when it was before the U.S. Senate and Congress), downstream you will see Mts. Index and Persis. Looking south out from the living room to the tree line beyond the river is the newly developing Heybrook Ridge County Park and to the north is the Index Town Wall, a mecca for rock climbers, located in the Forks of the Sky State Park and is also home to Peregrine falcons. Steven’s Pass Ski Area is about a half hour drive away. Other outdoor activities include river rafting, kayaking, hiking, biking, fishing, photography and plein-aire painting. It is also a great place to just relax and renew yourself. In the Fall and Winter months resident bald eagles often perch in the trees across the river and snack on a salmon on the shoreline across from the cabin.
In addition to our many local guests and those from throughout the U.S. others have stayed with us from all around the world including Europe, South America, Canada, Australia and China.
Come and stay at this owner-maintained and cleaned home where you will feel hugged by the mountains and be whispered to sleep by the river.

About David Meier/Lynn Chamberlain
Having pretty much grown up in the Skykomish Valley, I, David, moved to the cabin in 1976 and eventually purchased the property in 1978. A Cabin On The Sky is not just a business for me, it has also been my home and that pride of ownership shows throughout the property. I have operated A Cabin On The Sky as a vacation rental since 2002. Lynn and I met, here in Index, in the late 1970's, fell in love and eventually married. We currently reside a few blocks from the cabin with our canine companion Charlie. We both have extensive experience in the hospitality business in that Lynn worked as a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines for many years and we operated A Stone's Throw B&B out of our home for ten years. We have recently re-opened our B&B after taking a hiatus for a few years. I worked in the timber industry for nearly 2 decades and after the sawmill closed in the early 1990's, I went back to school to become a cabinet maker. In addition to woodworking and remodeling, I also spend parts of my summer working as a Wildland Firefighter. Wearing these different hats allows me to live and work in this beautiful place. Lynn retired from the airlines and spends much of her time pursuing her interest in gardening and painting. We have hosted plein-aire artist workshops at the cabin and our home. We have traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Mexico and Europe and believe that Index is located in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Community is very important to us. I served in the local fire department as a volunteer and commissioner for nearly 20 years. I currently serve on the Boards of Directors for the Index Historical Society and the Friends Of Heybrook Ridge, a grassroots organization that saved over 100 acres from being clearcut and is now a county park. We open our homes to our guests with the hope that they can come away with a taste of the life we have found in this beautiful valley.

Why David Meier/Lynn Chamberlain chose Index
I spent the first 14 years of my life in North Dakota fantasizing about mountains, forests and clear flowing water. These things were only available to me through the books of Jack London and Saturday matinees. My family moved to Gold Bar, WA in 1967. Even as a high school kid I would drive up the valley to Index to truly be in the mountains, hiking the hillsides and camping along the river. There are few places like this and when I had the opportunity to move here I jumped at the chance. Lynn moved here in 1978 from the Bay Area in California, immediately impressed by the beauty of this valley. Index is a small community, but has a strong core of civic-minded folks that are sometimes the envy of other, much larger communities. We have friends and neighbors that we have known for over 35 years. The river valley and mountains were carved from glaciers and are what limits the growth of this village to what it is today. Few places are blessed with this much beauty.
What makes this Cabin unique
The views were what brought us here. A strong desire to create comfortable, personalized homes keeps us happy and calms our spirits. The cabin was a very modest residence when I purchased it and then, with a lot of hard work and imagination, transformed it into what it is today. That ethic continues to this day. We are continually thinking of ways to improve our guest's experience. The same can be said about our own home except you would multiply that by several factors. Even though Index is off the beaten path it is located whereby a person can make the jump over Steven's Pass to Eastern Washington and beyond (we often feel like just driving on to Montana. And sometimes do). It is also close enough to Seattle and the rest of the Puget Sound Area when we need a taste of art, culture, shopping and maybe a ferry ride to the San Juan Islands. An hour either way will take you to another world.

My husband and I had a wonderful weekend getaway! It was beautiful and we loved being right now the water!
Thank you David for sharing your beautiful home with us. The location is truly breathtaking gorgeous. The home is well stocked and very comfortable and cozy. We stayed upstairs in a very comfy king bed with views from all windows. The river was flowing and even had some kayakers on it. Thank you again!!
We love coming to the cabin, and have been frequent guests for many years. It is the perfect place to celebrate special occasions, or to spend quality time with friends and family. The view is always great, even in the pouring rain. The sound of the river is relaxing, and the cabin is always clean, cozy, and equipped with everything you could possibly need. Looking forward to returning soon! Thanks, David and Lynn, for sharing this treasure with us all.
Hey, Cindy. Thanks for your kind words and thanks for your continued patronage over a long period of years. It is persons like you that makes doing this worthwhile and I so appreciate guests like yourselves, especially after having others who are less than respectful. It renews my faith in humanity.
I am pleased that I have been able to create a space for folks like yourselves (including the Lowriders) to escape from their busy lives, kick up their feet, and relax for a few days.
I hope to continue to provide this space for you and others for years to come. We'll see. I'm getting to be a geezer.
The views were stunning, the river was beautiful. The cabin was clean and well appointed. The breakfast nook was my favorite room. The bed was comfy and waking up to the sun cresting the mountains was fantastic. The hot tub was wonderful and the fire pit was where we spent most of our time! Can’t wait to go back!
Thank you, Josh. The breakfast nook is also my favorite room in the cabin. I can sit there for long lengths of time, just watching the river flow.
I hope that you can find your way back up to Index sometime soon. Each season is different and brings its own bit of magic.
Wonderful place. Peaceful with the noise of the river rushing by.
It’s a place with almost everything. Could use some space for hanging clothes now the upstairs is locked. Ate food we cooked, played games, laid in bed forever. Hardest we worked was walking to the hot tub. We really like it there.
The bed was the greatest. Like to know where it came from.
Did something we wouldn’t usually do...we watched TV. It was the Olympics, after all. But still was special sitting on the couch with that nice blanket and a fire in the fireplace.
Glad to hear that you had another relaxing stay at A Cabin On The Sky.
Regarding the now closed off linen storage area, after some guests exhibited behavior that was not welcome I decided to close off that "closet" space. It was being used as a sleeping area for unauthorized persons and children. Some folks used linens in a manner that was not wanted. Extra rugs were taken outside to cushion a path to the hot tub because they did not bring sandals. Some items went missing. Most guests would never dream of exhibiting that sort of behavior, but it happens. I have been trying to come up with an alternate solution for hanging clothes in the upstairs bedroom that will be useful while still being aesthetically pleasing. I appreciate your pointing it out. I will make that a priority.
Wonderfully cozy and had everything we needed
David has thought of everything you might need. This cottage is well appointed and very comfortable. The bed is super comfy and it was wonderful to fall asleep to the river. We saw a bald eagle fly by twice. The hot tub worked. Everything was clean. We were beyond pleased.
Each season brings its own special experiences and January/February brings the eagles who are following the winter spawning time for salmon. It is not unusual to see them perched in the trees across the river, or dining alfresco on a freshly caught fish on the opposite riverbank.
I'm glad that you had a nice time at A Cabin On The Sky and I hope that you can return sometime in the future.
A Cabin On The Sky is located in the North Fork of the Skykomish River Valley in the North Central Cascade Mountains. Index is surrounded by mountains, a river and various parks. The notable parks are: Forks of the Sky State Park, Heybrook Ridge County Park , the Mt. Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest & the Wild Sky Wilderness Area. The geological location lends itself to many outdoor activities. During the Spring and Summer months whitewater river rafting, with class IV-V rapids, draws folks from all over the country. There are rafting companies located in Index to serve you. Fishing is popular for some. Quiet roads for biking. There are many hiking trails in the area. Some of the more popular hikes are Wallace Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Lake Serene, Heybrook Ridge Lookout, Lake Dorothy, West Cady Ridge, Evergreen Mountain, Lookout Point and Barclay Lake, a hike that is suitable for kids. Just step outside the cabin doors. It doesn’t get any better than this.
The natural beauty of the area attracts photographers, plein-aire artists, songwriters and authors who stay with us throughout the year. A fun annual event is the Index Arts Festival, usually held in August, that celebrates music and the arts.
The Index Town Wall, just minutes away, is a well known mecca for the international rock climbing community. Index has been called the Yosemite of Washington State.
During the Autumn months an extra bonus is that we are just a bit more than an hour away from Leavenworth, WA and the beautiful drive over Stevens Pass to see the Fall colors. We are an excellent option for visiting that popular tourist destination without having to stay with all the crowds and high-priced accommodations that are associated with that.
The Winter months attract skiers and snowboarders that are headed to the slopes of Steven’s Pass Ski Area, about a 1/2 hour drive from Index.
Many of the attractions of Seattle and Puget Sound are within an hour or two from Index. Out of state guests find that A Cabin On The Sky is a great base for traveling west to the urban attractions of the greater Seattle area and for day trips to the more rural Eastern Washington attractions. Make a day of it and drive the Cascade Loop Trail that includes the stunning North Cascades Highway.
In addition to our many local guests and those from throughout the U.S., others have stayed with us from all around the world including Europe, South America, Canada, South Africa, Australia and China.
While all are welcome, our target group of the population are couples who are just looking for a peaceful, quiet place to relax and regroup in a beautiful setting. One couple has stayed with us 30 times, to date. Other repeat guests refer to A Cabin On The Sky as 'their place'. We have hosted many honeymooners, a small intimate wedding in the backyard and there have been a half dozen marriage proposals made at our cabin that we are aware of.
Whatever your desire, your stay here will be a memorable experience. Come and stay at this owner-maintained and cleaned home where you will feel hugged by the mountains and be whispered to sleep by the river.

Additional information about rental rates
While our rates are lower than many other rentals it should not reflect on the quality of our accommodations. We have a much lower overhead in that the cabin is owner cleaned and maintained and we wish to pass that savings along to our guests. We do not charge a cleaning fee unless the cabin is left in state that requires additional cleaning.
