In addition to the comfortably furnished living room there is also a dining room and a sun room, a cozy space where many guests spend a lot of their time while at the cabin. Sipping a hot beverage in the morning with the river flowing just out the window is a great way to start a day of relaxing. Fine art prints adorn the walls throughout the home as well as hand-crafted stained glass windows. The kitchen is fully furnished for our guests to prepare most meals. Kitchen amenities include a full-size refrigerator and stove, coffee maker, coffee grinder, French press coffee maker, pots and pans, flatware, dinnerware, microwave, blender, cooking utensils and glassware.

The 972 square foot home is on 150’ of riverfront.

Views upstream from the property are some of the peaks in the Wild Sky Wilderness Area (before it was designated a Wilderness Area we supported that effort as a business when it was before the U.S. Senate and Congress), downstream you will see Mts. Index and Persis. Looking south out from the living room to the tree line beyond the river is the newly developing Heybrook Ridge County Park and to the north is the Index Town Wall, a mecca for rock climbers, located in the Forks of the Sky State Park and is also home to Peregrine falcons. Steven’s Pass Ski Area is about a half hour drive away. Other outdoor activities include river rafting, kayaking, hiking, biking, fishing, photography and plein-aire painting. It is also a great place to just relax and renew yourself. In the Fall and Winter months resident bald eagles often perch in the trees across the river and snack on a salmon on the shoreline across from the cabin.

In addition to our many local guests and those from throughout the U.S. others have stayed with us from all around the world including Europe, South America, Canada, Australia and China.

Come and stay at this owner-maintained and cleaned home where you will feel hugged by the mountains and be whispered to sleep by the river.

About David Meier/Lynn Chamberlain

Having pretty much grown up in the Skykomish Valley, I, David, moved to the cabin in 1976 and eventually purchased the property in 1978. A Cabin On The Sky is not just a business for me, it has also been my home and that pride of ownership shows throughout the property. I have operated A Cabin On The Sky as a vacation rental since 2002. Lynn and I met, here in Index, in the late 1970's, fell in love and eventually married. We currently reside a few blocks from the cabin with our canine companion Charlie. We both have extensive experience in the hospitality business in that Lynn worked as a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines for many years and we operated A Stone's Throw B&B out of our home for ten years. We have recently re-opened our B&B after taking a hiatus for a few years. I worked in the timber industry for nearly 2 decades and after the sawmill closed in the early 1990's, I went back to school to become a cabinet maker. In addition to woodworking and remodeling, I also spend parts of my summer working as a Wildland Firefighter. Wearing these different hats allows me to live and work in this beautiful place. Lynn retired from the airlines and spends much of her time pursuing her interest in gardening and painting. We have hosted plein-aire artist workshops at the cabin and our home. We have traveled extensively throughout the U.S., Mexico and Europe and believe that Index is located in one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Community is very important to us. I served in the local fire department as a volunteer and commissioner for nearly 20 years. I currently serve on the Boards of Directors for the Index Historical Society and the Friends Of Heybrook Ridge, a grassroots organization that saved over 100 acres from being clearcut and is now a county park. We open our homes to our guests with the hope that they can come away with a taste of the life we have found in this beautiful valley.

David Meier/Lynn Chamberlain purchased this cabin in 1978

Why David Meier/Lynn Chamberlain chose Puget Sound North

I spent the first 14 years of my life in North Dakota fantasizing about mountains, forests and clear flowing water. These things were only available to me through the books of Jack London and Saturday matinees. My family moved to Gold Bar, WA in 1967. Even as a high school kid I would drive up the valley to Index to truly be in the mountains, hiking the hillsides and camping along the river. There are few places like this and when I had the opportunity to move here I jumped at the chance. Lynn moved here in 1978 from the Bay Area in California, immediately impressed by the beauty of this valley. Index is a small community, but has a strong core of civic-minded folks that are sometimes the envy of other, much larger communities. We have friends and neighbors that we have known for over 35 years. The river valley and mountains were carved from glaciers and are what limits the growth of this village to what it is today. Few places are blessed with this much beauty.

What makes this cabin unique

The views were what brought us here. A strong desire to create comfortable, personalized homes keeps us happy and calms our spirits. The cabin was a very modest residence when I purchased it and then, with a lot of hard work and imagination, transformed it into what it is today. That ethic continues to this day. We are continually thinking of ways to improve our guest's experience. The same can be said about our own home except you would multiply that by several factors. Even though Index is off the beaten path it is located whereby a person can make the jump over Steven's Pass to Eastern Washington and beyond (we often feel like just driving on to Montana. And sometimes do). It is also close enough to Seattle and the rest of the Puget Sound Area when we need a taste of art, culture, shopping and maybe a ferry ride to the San Juan Islands. An hour either way will take you to another world.

The cabin again was very clean and cozy. They were also very thorough on how to get in, directions to the cabin, and little notes on how to use everything. The views of the river and the mountains were breathtaking. We will definitely be coming back and recommend anyone interested in staying at the cabin on the sky.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I also have to comment that you were one of the cleanest couples to have ever stayed with us. It is always a pleasant surprise to find the cabin in such good order when I go over to prepare it for my next guests. I was a bit concerned that the weather may have dampened your enthusiasm, but whenever the mountains do make an appearance it is beyond wonderful. Even on rainy days the river can be amazing all by itself. Thanks for referring others to A Cabin On The Sky. It is always appreciated.

Perfect place for our annual Girls Weekend.

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved A Cabin on the Sky. The four of us have been friends since grade school. Found this gem of a location and booked it as soon as I heard what dates worked for us all. Our stay was for Aug 4th-7th 2017. It was everything we had hoped for. Serene location with a beautiful river view. Sadly we couldn't access the river, because the embankment is huge, sharp boulders (one of us got 4 stitches because of a slip on a sharp boulder). However a very short walk away is a little sandy beach area where we could get into the river easily. Be forewarned that the river rocks are very, very slippery. We had a few contusions due to a couple of us not having adequate footwear. We found out that there were areas deep enough to swim by surprise. We're walking along the bottom and then drop off to nowhere.

The house had our needs covered. We went to a little grocery store in Gold Bar and found a nice array of fresh fruits and veggies as well as some friendly employees. Kitchen was equipped nicely. I didn't know there was a microwave until I looked inside a lower cupboard. Hot tub was great and we only used it twice because it's so warm this time of year. We were a little startled when the owner, David, popped by to water some flowers so I made sure to go outside and say hello. The only downfall was not being able to BBQ or have a fire in the pit due to wildfire smoke that made the air quality pretty terrible.

Would totally recommend this place to anyone who is looking for some tranquility in their stay. The background noise of the river lulled us all to sleep each night.

Loved this to the moon and back

  • 5 of 5

I cannot thank David enough for sharing this little piece of heaven on earth. We stayed for a week, leaving only once to shop for more supplies and were otherwise happy as clams simply to rest and find peace. The cabin is extremely comfortable, cozy, and not at all pretentious. Yet everything we could possibly need, and more, was provided. Spotlessly clean and tidy, the cabin made us feel immediately at home. After day two, I took my watch off and did not put it back on until we left. It was so freeing to just eat, read, sleep, watch the river, toast marshmallows, enjoy the hot tub, or stroll around the sleepy village of Index whenever the mood moved us! Most of our days we had sunny, beautiful weather, but the last day it rained, and the misty clouds settling around the mountains and tree tops were just as beautiful but in a different way. I hope with all my heart I am able to return to Cabin on the Sky some day. I will dream of it fondly until then.

Exceeded Our Expectations

  • 5 of 5

Every great thing you read about this place is true! From the moment we got off the truck the sound of the river was music to our ears. Inside and out, the entire cabin faces the river. You can enjoy the view and the sound to your hearts content. The host, David, has thought of everything! His attention to detail makes for perfect accommodations. David was personable and professional and I can't thank him enough for sharing his cabin with us. My husband and I enjoyed every minute of our time here and look forward to our next visit.

Owner's Response: It is always rewarding to hear that my guests have noticed some of the little extras that I provide for my guests. We all seem to forget at least one thing when we get away and I hope that someone will find something that I may have forgotten, myself, when traveling, and that small thing makes a difference to their stay.

A Cabin On The Sky is located in the North Fork of the Skykomish River Valley in the North Central Cascade Mountains. Index is surrounded by mountains, a river and various parks. The notable parks are: Forks of the Sky State Park, Heybrook Ridge County Park , the Mt. Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest & the Wild Sky Wilderness Area. The geological location lends itself to many outdoor activities. During the Spring and Summer months whitewater river rafting, with class IV-V rapids, draws folks from all over the country. There are rafting companies located in Index to serve you. Fishing is popular for some. Quiet roads for biking. There are many hiking trails in the area. Some of the more popular hikes are Wallace Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Lake Serene, Heybrook Ridge Lookout, Lake Dorothy, West Cady Ridge, Evergreen Mountain, Lookout Point and Barclay Lake, a hike that is suitable for kids. Just step outside the cabin doors. It doesn’t get any better than this.

The natural beauty of the area attracts photographers, plein-aire artists, songwriters and authors who stay with us throughout the year. A fun annual event is the Index Arts Festival, usually held in August, that celebrates music and the arts.

The Index Town Wall, just minutes away, is a well known mecca for the international rock climbing community. Index has been called the Yosemite of Washington State.

During the Autumn months an extra bonus is that we are just a bit more than an hour away from Leavenworth, WA and the beautiful drive over Stevens Pass to see the Fall colors. We are an excellent option for visiting that popular tourist destination without having to stay with all the crowds and high-priced accommodations that are associated with that.

The Winter months attract skiers and snowboarders that are headed to the slopes of Steven’s Pass Ski Area, about a 1/2 hour drive from Index.

Many of the attractions of Seattle and Puget Sound are within an hour or two from Index. Out of state guests find that A Cabin On The Sky is a great base for traveling west to the urban attractions of the greater Seattle area and for day trips to the more rural Eastern Washington attractions. Make a day of it and drive the Cascade Loop Trail that includes the stunning North Cascades Highway.

In addition to our many local guests and those from throughout the U.S., others have stayed with us from all around the world including Europe, South America, Canada, South Africa, Australia and China.

While all are welcome, our target group of the population are couples who are just looking for a peaceful, quiet place to relax and regroup in a beautiful setting. One couple has stayed with us 30 times, to date. Other repeat guests refer to A Cabin On The Sky as 'their place'. We have hosted many honeymooners, a small intimate wedding in the backyard and there have been a half dozen marriage proposals made at our cabin that we are aware of.

Whatever your desire, your stay here will be a memorable experience. Come and stay at this owner-maintained and cleaned home where you will feel hugged by the mountains and be whispered to sleep by the river.
