About Larry and Wendy Shrader
Lawrence and Wendy Shrader are the owners of Willow Lodge and Primrose Dale Farm. It is a working farm that produces corn, soybeans and grass hay. Lawrence was born and raised in Littlestown and Wendy in Gettysburg so they are both native to Adams County. Both have a family background in farming.
Larry and Wendy Shrader purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Larry and Wendy Shrader chose York Springs
In 2006 and newly married, Lawrence and Wendy began searching for the farm of their dreams...one that was not too far off the beaten path but far enough to provide the tranquility and pastoral setting they were looking for. Their search ended in 2010 when a 52 acre farm with two houses went on the auction block. Lawrence and Wendy moved quickly and with one swift sound of a gavel, Primrose Dale was born. By offering Willow Lodge as a guest cottage here on their farm, they hope to share with others the peace and tranquil beauty they found here in upper Adams County.
What makes this Cottage unique
Sitting back off the main road, the private gravel lane leads to a farm house and guest cottage. An abundance of wildlife can be spotted from Willow Lodge. It is not a rare occurrence to see a buck or a doe with her fawn grazing at the edge of the woods. The sound of a woodpecker, or a dove; an occasional 'hoot' of an owl is typical. The quiet beauty and the privacy of the location is unsurpassed….a serene place to rest, relax and renew.

Clean, Comfortable, and Very Quiet
Willow Lodge served our needs for a two trip to Gettysburg in October, 2018. We did not want the busy commotion in Gettysburg (and the much higher priced locations). You are about 12 miles north of Gettysburg in a rural setting, with decent access to the highway. The unit has a large kitchen and dining area with reasonable appliances/kitchen utensils. There is no TV or Internet connection in the home (which works for us). We found the home very clean and well maintained.
Private relaxing atmosphere with all the comforts home
Nice to get away from modern distractions of every day life. Such as TV computers. Etc. Enjoy time with family at A much needed point in life
Perfect for our stay!
This house was perfect for our yearly girls' trip. It was close enough to Gettysburg to sightsee, yet far enough for a peaceful atmosphere from all the downtown commotion.
Reminded me of my childhood circa 1960/70’s furniture and appliances.
Coffee took over 20-mins to brew! Toaster never popped up toast...had to monitor it so no burnt food! Showers were made for small children and/or hobbits. Master bath shower needed a wand extension like other shower.
This lodge could have free tv if there was an antenna & tv. But the quiet was ok.
All of the appliances are modern and in good working order and the furniture reflects the “country cottage” atmosphere we have chosen to create to match the setting in which the property is located. We did test the coffee maker to see if it needed to be replaced, but after brewing a full pot of coffee through the machine twice, it worked well and took approximately 10 minutes each time to complete the cycle. We also placed two pieces of toast in the toaster, to test it as well, and walked away. We returned when we heard the toast pop and saw that they had popped all the way up and were toasted accordingly as set on the dial selection…no toast ever burnt unless we wanted it to. Both the master bath shower, which was newly installed in 2012, and the main bath tub/shower combination are standard size and made for adults. As stated in our listing, TV is not provided because we choose to market the cottage as a “get away from it all” (and this includes television). Our many previous 4 and 5 star guest reviews validate the desire of those who rent our property to be “disconnected” from all the daily technology. Therefore, we will continue making this a central feature of our marketing. We do like to encourage potential guests to view all the photos we provide in our listing, read through the previous reviews and detailed information regarding the amenities, and to message us through our listing with any questions about the property before making a decision to book. We want all of our guests to be confident that our country cottage will meet their needs and expectations.
a wonderfully quiet and peaceful retreat
If it wasn't for the incessant rain and HUMIDITY this place would have been wonderful. The owners couldn't help that. It was just a nice distance from Gettysburg and so very peaceful and quiet. That is what we look for. The down side was the humidity. EVerything was sticky, including the kitchen floor. The amount of rain probably was the reason things smelled sour in the house. The towels smelled sour right from the start, which the owners probably aren't aware of. The place looked clean upon coming, but we opened the windows due to the heat, and the window wells were mildewy - again the humidity and rain. Normally this place is proabably wonderful. I am sure they have been influenced by this abnormal high rainy summer.
We are glad to hear that you enjoyed the peace and quiet found here at our cabin, Willow Lodge. We, too, wish the weather had been a little more cooperative so you could have spent some time experiencing the outdoor area and enjoying the lovely views and wildlife sightings. We were surprised to hear, through the review, that you apparently had some issues and concerns regarding the cabin. We wish you had contacted us at the time to let us know about them so we would have had the opportunity to try to resolve them for you. For example, we would have been happy to provide you with another set of bath linens, as well as ensure that you knew where the air conditioning controls were located and how to operate them correctly. We have excellent quality central air conditioning at Willow Lodge. Proper control of the thermostat would have eliminated any humidity and other issues that you stated you were experiencing, making the indoor air space very comfortable. Opening the windows simply allowed the warm, moist air from outdoors to enter and circulate throughout the house. Also, all of the windows and the tracking are cleaned 4 times a year. However, due to the location of the cabin being so close to a wooded area, the tracking can quickly accumulate dirt and grime (which is what you observed…not mildew). We rely on good communication from our guests in order to continue to provide quality customer service. In short, if we don’t know there is an issue, we can’t do anything to address it. Our number one goal is to always be available to our guests, provide a clean, comfortable environment and to ensure that everyone thoroughly enjoys their stay at our cabin.
Up a long wooded driveway we found this cottage-like house in a clearing surrounded by fields. It was an older home, but clean with a few updates There was no WiFi or TV but that’s one of the reasons we chose Willow Lodge.
We had 3 older teens in tow and thoroughly enjoyed our getaway week. We had a bonfire in the fire pit, played cards and barbecued. We stargazed and watched the fireflies.
We spent some time in Gettysburg touring the Military Park and exploring the town which was a short drive (15 min) away.
The master bedroom only had a full sized bed which was a bit tight for my 6’3” husband but it was do-able.
Two full baths was a plus and the kitchen was well stocked with dishes and cookware.
The large dining room table was perfect for our dinners and card games.
We had a very relaxing week.
Thank you for sharing your home.
