Overview

About the property

Beautiful Home, Nature Lover's Paradise, Infinity Pool, Walk to Secluded Beach

We have it all, Ocean and Mountain views, Green Conservation Area, Mangrove forest, and Pasture lands. Quinta de La Paz is located in an absolutely incredible setting in Playa Buena Vista, Esterones. With just a short 10 minute drive to the lovely coastal town of Samara, 30 minutes to the fishing port of Carillo, and 10-30 minutes to world class surfing beaches on the road north to Nosara. The property is 800 meters from the beach, a short stroll down a peaceful country lane where you'll be entertained by exotic birds and monkeys playing overhead as you walk.

One of the best parts of 'La Quinta' is the layout which is perfect for multiple couples or families - close enough to enjoy each other but with independent buildings/balconies/bedrooms to have privacy when it's desired. The home is situated to catch breezes while maximizing the views. It's tranquil and secluded without being isolated and not at all far from 'town' nor from things to do. A nature lover's paradise awaits.

Favorite place on earth

  • 5 of 5

This really is our favorite place to vacation. The beautiful well designed house is amazing and the owners are very helpful and very welcoming. The guest book is really great for stuff to do and where to shop for food etc... You have to go to the best restaurant / bar in the world that is near the house; El Coyote. The owners are wonderful happy smiling women that cook like heaven and make the best margaritas. Very relaxing. The best of Costa Rica's PURA VIDA!

We should know... It was our second visit in the last two years. More to come for sure! MJ & Family from Montreal, Quebec, CANADA

I would like to give 5 stars

  • 3 of 5

We loved the house. It's beautiful and the property is also gorgeous. When we arrived it was super clean and the pool looked great. We didn't mind being away from town and needing a 4x4 to get to the house and up the drive as that was part of the adventure. The monkeys are really fun to watch and Antonio was very nice and accomodating. The patio was our favorite place to hang out in the morning looking for wildlife.

The reason I can't give it five stars:

The septic backed up on us twice while we were there. We have been to Costa Rica before and we know that septic systems can be an issue and we were careful to put toilet paper in the garbage. We also didn't use a ton of water while we were there.

The first time it backed up I was in the shower and it started coming up through the shower drain. Not a pleasant experience, but we caught it and my husband plunged the drain and cleaned it out as best as he could and we cleaned and mopped up the mess using bleach from laundry room. We didn't alert the property manager because we thought it was a fluke since no one else had mentioned it happening in their reviews.

The second time it happened was when I was doing laundry. I had started a second load and went back to the master bedroom to find the whole room and bathroom were flooded from the septic backing up through the shower again. We worked for quite some time to sweep the water out. Luckily it only got some shoes and socks and the bedding got wet. Not feeling comfortable with the cleanliness of the situation, my husband and I moved into one of the other bedrooms and our children doubled up again the other.

I emailed the property manager when the septic backed up the second time and his reply was that I shouldn't have done two loads of laundry. When I told him it would have been nice to know ahead of time any rules regarding the septic, he said he couldn't have warned me because it has never been an issue at this house before.

A couple of smaller issues:

When we arrived, the air conditioning in one of the bedrooms wasn't working. It wasn't too much of an issue for us because we only had our two children (one in her twenties and one a teenager) with us so they doubled up for a few nights until the air conditioning unit was fixed.

The pool had some algae issues while we were there that weren't completely resolved.

I really liked the house and property, but the septic issue was a big one for us.

Owner's Response: Rebecca,  We are so sorry to hear that you had issues with the plumbing and I’d like to address your complaints one by one so that there is no misunderstanding. The reason the septic has never been mentioned in a review as a problem is because it’s never been a problem. We have our septic checked periodically and it was thoroughly cleaned-out a few years ago. After you checked out our plumber assessed the situation to be sure that it would not happen again, and found a lot of paper, sand and hair had accumulated over time in the drains. It was not a problem with the septic specifically, but a drainage pipe clogged that could not be anticipated by anyone or repaired before your arrival. The air-conditioners are one year old and had been thoroughly cleaned and checked the first week of December. However the malfunction was due to a corroded wire. We made sure sure that it was functioning for you in a reasonable amount of time with the resources available. Regarding the laundry, my property manager had mentioned, after the incident was reported that with the information he had, that doing a second load exacerbated the problem because the drainage pipe for the water is the same as the shower. Nobody could have anticipated this scenario.  The pool was kept quite clean and the "algae" you are referring to is the appearance of a mark at the water line around the pool. This is due to the calcification of the water in this area of Costa Rica We take great pride in maintaining our home and often we are at the mercy of the jungle and the elements.  Leaves and sticks fall in the pool, animals eat through wires and all sorts of other unpredictable things happen when your home is in the jungle.  We do our best to make sure that all of our guests are happy and that any problems which may arise are responded to or remedied within 24 hours. Sincerely, Day

A beauty

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful place, we especially enjoyed watching the sunrise in the morning. Great pool, nicely designed interior. Even possible to do some wildlife watching from the pool: A family of howler monkeys passed through the trees several times.

Not far from the beach, only backdraw is the location on the western side of Playa Buenavista - to get there quickly from Samara you need a 4x4 to cross a river. Otherwise it's a longer detour.

Owner's Response: Thank you! We are so glad you enjoyed the house, pool and all the wildlife. We do try to make all of our guests aware of our distance from town, which is described here on VRBO and also in the guestbook we send when you make your reservation. We do hope you were able to use the river crossing as normally at this time of year it is quite dry. It was a pleasure having you and you are welcome back to the Quinta anytime. PuraVida!

Beautiful house.

  • 5 of 5

The house and view were beautiful. If we were to visit again, we would certainly stay there. The driveway is a fun challenge, but if you are in 4wd is no problem if you are not overloaded. The house was very well kept, clean with a beautiful pool. Monkeys added a lot to the visit, and the close walk to the beach and local eateries was great.

Amazing place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our multigenerational crew. Patio with rocking chairs is great for views and group meals, separate buildings nice for different bedtimes, and we used the pool multiple times everyday. The nearby beach was wonderful for playing in the waves (surfing and boogey boarding), strolling under the full moon and chasing hermit crabs. But, the highlight was the visitors in trees. We loved the daily visits from the howler monkeys, amusing call of the trogans, and the parakeets flying through. Oh and we got our fill of mangos from the tree in the yard, so delicious!! The driveway is a little intimidating, but manageable. Thank you for sharing such a magical place.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review, and such a lovely one at that! It sounds like you all enjoyed the area and our property to its fullest. I'm glad you were lucky enough to get some mangoes before the Congos got them ! Lol It was a pleasure to have you as guests and you are all welcome back, anytime! Pura Vida, Day

About Day

We jokingly refer to ourselves as an Art and Engineering Collective because it encompasses a vast aray of ideas and leaves us free to explore just about anything. We are in truth, an artist and an engineer with oh so many things rolled in there...sailor, chef, software developer, restoration artist, photographer, eco designer, entrepreneur and the list goes on.

We are both passionate about travel, conservation and preservation of the natural environment, organic gardening, supporting local economies, learning, reading and travel, travel, travel

Day purchased this house in 2013

Why Day chose Sámara

We have had the good fortune to travel quite a bit and while many places have left us yearning to return, there is no where quite like Costa Rica and particularly this house. The first time we rented we were totally smitten with the house, the grounds, the people, the food, and the beach. We loved it so much that we returned the next season and felt like we belonged there. As fate would have it the house came up for sale and the rest is...Being written. We hope you love this house and area as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

One of the best parts of 'Quinta' is the layout which is perfect for multiple couples or families - close enough to enjoy each other but with independent buildings/balconies/bedrooms to have privacy when it's desired. The home is situated to catch breezes while maximizing the views. It's tranquil and secluded but not at all isolated nor far from 'town' or from things to do. Walking to Playa Buena Vista or Playa Barrigona will reward you will breathtaking views, incredible bird watching and an opportunity to experience the "real" Costa Rica.

This is a unique & peaceful slice of paradise. The property is located 1.5-2.0 hours from the international airport in Liberia (LIR). There is a smaller local airport 30 minutes away in Carillo beach.

Both the towns of Samara and Nosara offer a wide variety of shops and restaurants with many operated by expats from Europe and the US.

Buena Vista beach is secluded and peaceful with very few visitors and is quite safe for swimming, surfing, and fishing. The beach is a Turtle sanctuary and thus is protected from the hyper development that has plagued the northern coast of the Nicoya peninsula.  There is also a bird sanctuary adjacent to beach along the estuary offering an opportunity to see very rare and colorful winged friends. There is a wide variety of local flora and fauna. The area is very green and tranquil.

There are many things to do around the area so once you have had your fill of relaxing at the pool, long leisurely strolls on Playa Buena Vista, and communing with nature by the patio get yourself up and out. Costa Rica has endless possibilities! World Class surfing, surfing lessons, kayaking tours, beachcombing, turtle tours, canopy excursions, hiking, biking, sightseeing, visiting galleries full of local art and craft, and the food…oh the food, you’ll never have fresher! Ok the coffee…world class! We would need pages to describe all of the wonderful things there are to do and explore.
