About this property
Ocean View King Rental near Akaka Falls, Hawaii
The Hamakua Guesthouse is an off-grid rustic eco-lodge located on the south end of Hawaii's breathtaking, jungle, rainforest Hamakua Coast, close to Hilo. We offer two of these individually decorated rooms with a king bed and ocean views. We have two equipped shared kitchens for your use and you may use any of our three shared full bathrooms (located off the hallway). Our property also features a private waterfall swimming area for your enjoyment.
The space
We have two King Rooms in the house and both are pictured in this listing. They have the same amenities, but they are individually decorated. Your room assignment will be given at check-in and is determined based upon the reservations that may have come before yours. We ask that guests with mobility issues let us know right after booking so we can attempt to place them on the lowest level.
The Hamakua House is off-the-grid. Being off-the-grid means that we get all of our electricity from the sun and all of our water is collected from the rain. We are not connected to the island's grid power system. Our solar panels charge a large bank of deep cycle batteries all day in order for us to have power around the clock.
This cabin is surrounded by a variety of exotic fruit trees and borders on a spring-fed river. You may eat any fruits you harvest on the property and you are able to swim in the river.
This property is a lush rainforest jungle so there are bugs, mosquitoes, lizards, and coqui frogs (that chirp all night). Beyond all the traditional pest mitigations we provide, controlling pests is largely on you, the guest, to prevent infestation by containing your food and thoroughly cleaning up after your meals immediately after you have prepared food.
This accommodation is just a step above camping, so we want to ensure that the appropriate type of guest is booking the space. This is rustic and rural.
It is designed for TWO guests (comfortable) but could uncomfortably accommodate as many as three guests if all three are sleeping on the king bed.
We do not charge a cleaning fee. However, in return, guests are required to clean the shared kitchen after they use it, remove their food, regularly take out their trash, and wash their dishes or a cleaning fee of up to $150 will be added to their bill. This is also crucial to our pest mitigation strategy.
Guest access
You will have access to two equipped kitchens.
The upstairs (larger) kitchen right outside of the room doors is closed from 9pm till 8am (no exceptions).
The downstairs kitchen (smaller) is open 24/7 and is accessed by going outside and taking the sidewalk down to the lower level. You will be required to make your early morning coffee or late night meals there (again, no exceptions) so plan ahead.
The house has two indoor full bathrooms (one off the hallway near the rooms and one downstairs) and one outdoor full bathroom. They each have a shower and the outdoor bathroom has an outdoor shower with sunrise ocean views.
There is also a TV room/lounge on the lower level and you may use the smart TV to stream using your own accounts.
Parking is free and abundant. Renting a car is strongly advised.
It takes about 5 minutes to walk to our private waterfall swimming area from this place.
