About Kawehi Cochran
Aloha. I am a kama'aina-indigenous Hawaiian, living in a tropical environment. My residence (hale) is ideally located in the heart of Hilo with lots of authentic Hawaiian artifacts and charm. My yard is lush with many tropicals, which I carefully planted. I was born and raised in Hilo, and this was my primary residence growing up so it is dear and special to me. I have lots of local knowledge and history of Hilo and its people. My grandfather was a senator and many of his senate bills that he introduced are still on the books today. I love traveling, hosting, cooking, entertaining, avid golfer, canoe paddler and hula. Hawaii has 12 months of outdoor weather. So come and enjoy my retreat. I believe staying here will be a very special experience reminiscent of old Hawaii. You will feel the mana....spiritual power.... E komo mai.....welcome.....

Favorite home on Hawaii
This home was filled with charming accents and the host provided everything needed for a comfortable stay. The home had plenty of room with loads of quirky accessories and a clock collection. Beautiful inside and out with 2 outside sitting areas. Would have loved to spend more time here. The host even provided fresh baked croissants and sliced mango in the fridge!
Mahalo for allowing me to host you. It was a great pleasure.
As advertised - authentic, comfortable and great location.
Kawehi was one of the better VRBO hosts we have encountered, with daily fresh Papaya left in the frig, daily trash and towel service and welcoming information. Decorated creatively. Great lighting on timers indoor and out made us feel secure at night. Open air quarters made it Hawai’i authentic (versus a timeshare we stayed in the first week). Bird feeder attracted dozens of beautiful birds. Five different seating areas for lounging and eating was very creative. Well equipped kitchen. Books and maps and slippers and blankets for the cool evenings.... Easy to get south to Volcano, west to Mauna Kea and north to Waipio. Loved it!
Mahalo Nui Loa. i’m delighted you loved your visit with me. A pleasure hosting you.
This is Hawaii.
What a treat. This old Hawaiian home is packed with collections of everything from old wall clocks to straw hats. Also a nice porch overlooking a beautiful garden with fountain, lush vegetation, and entertaining birds. Been to Big Island many times, usually in a house on the lava cliffs or on tide pools at Kapoho. Will continue with the places on the water, but will now stay here for a day or two first. Mahalo Kawehi. And Hau’oli makahiki hou.
Wonderful hosting you and look forward to your next visit. A hui hou.
Our Favorite Place to Stay in Hilo
For us, Hale Kawehi is a taste of real Hawaii. The house is beautifully maintained and always clean. The owner of the property is the definition of the aloha spirit and how to live with joy and respect. We would recommend this property in a heartbeat. Mahalo Kawehi!
It was wonderful hosting you. Happy New Year and hope to see you again.
Wonderful, clean, Hawaiian home!
We loved our stay here for the beginning of our honeymoon trip! Very clean, cozy home. Owner goes out of her way to make you comfortable. We got in very late from our flight to Kona and drove to Hilo around 11pm but the house was so easy to find, well lit, with plenty of instructions. Would stay again!
Just as it appears in the pictures. We stayed here two weeks; its the perfect base from which to explore the Big Island. Kitchen was great, lots of outdoor seating and the AC in the bedroom made for cool sleeping. FYI, the AC makes the frogs a non-issue if you are a lite sleeper like my spouse.
Kawehi, our host, is a treasure. We invited her to dinner one evening and she returned the favor by taking us out for a lovely breakfast. She is a native and can give you many tips on the island. The house also has guide books and maps.
We can't express how much we enjoyed staying at this hale (house) in Hilo.
Located in the downtown area, walking distance. Close to Rainbow Falls, Liliuokalani Park, Hilo Municipal Golf Course, Imiloa Astrology Center. A great launch to all tourist attractions. 30 miles to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Hale Kawehi is a very special kama'aina, very open Polynesian guest house in downtown Hilo featuring many Hawaiian museum/artifacts displayed throughout the house...... there are beautiful stained glass windows and panels and Koa furniture and cabinets. The setting is very private and tropical...a very special oasis in the center of Hilo and you will be coming to a very nice and quiet neighborhood. This guest house is large, 2,000 sq.ft., on a family estate, and very private. Host lives in a separate cottage. It is walking distance to the downtown area with the bus terminal, farmer's market, restaurants and shops. The Volcano district, Akaka Falls, Botanical Gardens, Imiloa, Liliuokalani Gardens are must see places. If you want to golf, there are 3 golf courses in the area. Hilo is, indeed, the sightseeing side of the Island. So come, relax and enjoy the enchanting Hale Kawehi.
