About Chris Hilliar

Your hosts, Chris and Molly are long-time residents of the Comox Valley and have a good knowledge of the local environment, the many attractions and the ‘must-see’ beauty spots.

If you want a good beach walk or guidance to one of the many great restaurants in town, just ask.

Chris, retired from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, is now the gardener, Molly has worked in local theatre as a costume designer for the past 20 years.

Chris Hilliar purchased this guest house in 1974

Why Chris Hilliar chose Courtenay

We're high on the hill on Lake Trail Road and close to Comox Lake and all the wilderness around it. Follow it far enough and Lake Trail will take you all the way to Port Alberni on the west coast (4 wheel only). Along the shores of the lake you can access great mountain biking trails, walk in the Comox Lake Bluffs Ecological Reserve or drive to the trail head for a hike to the Comox Glacier.

Wilderness at our doorstep yet we're just 5 minutes from down-town Courtenay

What makes this guest house unique

We custom built this guest house with privacy in mind. Your own driveway, your own suite, your own yard. Peaceful rural surroundings yet so close to town. Room in the yard to play with the kids but just minutes from beaches and water parks in town.

A Perfect Gem

  • 5 of 5

Molly and Chris have gone to great lengths to make their guest house a warm, welcoming, and very comfortable get-away. Everything we could possibly need, and more, was provided,. We loved the fern theme that was carried throughout the decor, and the fresh fruit, eggs, and home-made muffins were a treat! Even in the rain, the garden was beautiful. The guest house is in a quiet and peaceful location but still just a short drive to the events we attended.

From the moment you pull into the driveway you feel relaxed. The owners are the sweetest couple and the guest house is beautiful and has everything you need plus more. It is exceptionally clean and qiuet. They even left out a few toys for our daughter to play with which I thought was so.sweet of them. They provide you with more than enough for a delicious breakfast..the muffins were to die for as was the homemade jam and granola. The other reviews don't lie this place is wonderful and we are already talking about staying there again. We have stayed in Fairmont hotels and you don't get this kind of service. Thank you once again Chris and Molly we will see you again.

Peaceful, welcoming.

The Hilliars have created a space with exceptional attention to detail for the comfort of their guests. The guest house is clean, modern and well appointed. It was a perfect size for the two of us.

The garden and grounds are delightful, and the private driveway very convenient. A quiet rural experience within minutes from downtown and the highway.

While the place and setting are enough to chose this place, it's the hosts that really make the difference. All the small details have been thought out to make the stay perfect. From fluffy towels to all the basics in the kitchen to get you started. We had fresh berries from the garden and homemade muffins and jam waiting for us!

If you're thinking of coming to the Comox Valley, don't hesitate to book your stay at Copper Fern. We're so glad we did.

The Comox Valley encompasses the three communities of Courtenay, Comox, and Cumberland, each carved from the natural beauty of the surrounding forest and farmland. The area is renowned for its outdoor recreation opportunities which is maybe best exemplified every spring by the Annual Snow to Surf Race featuring snow shoeing, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, running, mountain biking, kayaking, road biking, and canoeing. We have it all in the Comox Valley.

In addition to outdoor pursuits, the Comox Valley boasts world-class restaurants. Their mouth-watering fare is often locally produced from the myriad farms in the area.

The Comox Valley is one of the largest agricultural areas on Vancouver Island. Our Farmer’s Markets are held every week throughout the year – usually on Saturday mornings – and there is always great food and great music.

Music is another year-long attraction in the Comox Valley available at small venues like “The Waverley” and the 'Cumberland Hotel' in Cumberland, the 'Little Red Church' in Comox to three day long events like the Vancouver Island Music Fest held every July in Courtenay.
