Imagine walking into your accommodations on your dream vacation on Maui and all you see is ocean as you step through the front door. Your jaw hangs open as you drop your bags on the tile/new hardwood floor and you head directly for the private lanai... 'Is this real?' you ask yourself. Oh yes... the pictures on VRBO didn't even do the place justice...it's real. You yell to your significant other, 'honey, grab us some wine!' It sure is a good thing that you stopped at the Times Market across the street on your way in for some groceries. You don't plan on leaving this place for a while. At least not until you've seen the sunset from the new balcony height chairs that you've just settled into. This is what Maui is all about. You have officially found paradise. This is why we take one last longing look back when we walk out the door as we leave each and every time. Our guests tell us the same thing. You will get a kick out of watching the sunset cruises sail directly by the front of the condo and stop to watch the perfect sunsets each evening. You get that at no extra cost :-). You'll find yourselves timing your days so you can get back to home base by sunset - trust me. There's no better place to watch it or to watch whales. Listen for the sounds of blowing conch shells when the sun disappears beneath the horizon. Give your conch trumpeting skills a try yourself! How magical can it get?

Hey, you haven't even noticed all the upgrades we just did on the place, but you'll see them in a bit. You just fell in love with our place for the same reasons why we did. If it's whale season, grab the binoculars on your way out to the lanai while you get comfortable to get an extra close look. You are in for a show!

Another reason why you'll never want to leave? The constant sounds of the waves rolling in and crashing. You may wonder if you want a one bedroom or a studio unit for your trip. Trust me, you want a studio (one bedrooms have the bedroom near the entrance of the unit, the furthest point from the ocean). A studio unit is the only way to hear the waves crashing from your bed to lull you to sleep. Ahh... Heaven. I simply can't describe it in words. Maui Kai is the closest building to the water on all of Maui. You'll seriously think you are on a cruise ship. I've heard this comment made dozens of times. Simply unbelievable. We're on the 6th floor and the lanai is 100% private and secure. Lower floors aren't very private (people walk by and can see in your unit). The higher floors have the best views by far. People couldn't see into the unit or lanai if they tried, and nobody can possibly get inside. You're able to keep the sliding doors open all evening long and hear the waves crashing. You can hear the ocean even when you close the doors (you will need to do this to hear the TV- the waves are that close!) and you have the air conditioning on (central air on Maui? YES and very rare!). Do you need air conditioning on Maui... that's up to you, but it's there if you need it. We use it every single time we stay at the condo. It can get warm on Maui. We've stayed in condos with window AC units in the living rooms and fans in the bedrooms...we were miserable. We just couldn't buy one of those condos knowing that we couldn't sleep at night while sweating (do consider it when finding a place to stay). Maui Kai is also quiet. The sound of the ocean helps with this quite a bit, but we also aren't near any roads and the parking lot is away from the building. We've stayed at several condos in the Ka'anapali area and were kept up all night long. Read reviews for any place that you are considering...see if people complain about barking dogs, roosters (yes!), slamming car doors, etc. If you don't have air conditioning, you have to keep windows open. With time changes coming in from wherever you are traveling from, and others coming in at all hours of the night, you need to be able to sleep at some point :-). Being on the 6th floor isolates you from the noise of passersby on the beach and since our building is concrete you won't hear people walking above you. That surprised me since we are from the mainland and are used to wooden buildings.

We purchased our piece of paradise in February 2014 and have been completely remodeling, renovating and redecorating it since in very high end decor and materials. We kept with a beachy/Hawaiian (yet modern) theme in blue, white and silver. The hardwood floors are brand new, as well as the high-end Breda bed system which quickly and easily converts from an extremely comfortable, brand new, pillow top king sized bed (a regular pillow top mattress) to an 80 inch couch! The Breda bed is a better version of a murphy bed; it's as comfortable as any bed you have slept on - honest! We had the system made to insure the comfort of the bed. You will stay in your very own junior suite with an updated full kitchen (everything is full size - many condos, even in our building aren't this way) with quartz countertops and new glass backsplash, and you will have a full bathroom. The condo comfortably sleeps two (or you may add a third person by renting our comfy twin size air mattress for $15/night). We work through the management company and partner with them, so they are 100% at your service and treat you with Aloha! We will actually send you to the main office to get your key, etc. You have added security by checking in through the main rental office that is located on-site in Maui. If you have problems or issues, they will be taken care of immediately. Daily maid service is provided through the on-site management company with no cleaning fees or extra hidden charges added on. If you need anything, you can stop by downstairs, or dial them on your room phone (just like a hotel).

Maui Kai #603 is located north of downtown Lahaina, directly on the ocean on the West side of the island. It's away from the heat and busy streets of Lahaina, but close enough to enjoy the atmosphere during the day, or the nightlife in the evenings. The views are unbelievable, the beaches to die for and the snorkeling is out of this world. Our favorite snorkel areas are super close: just out front of the condo, Honolua Bay, Black Rock, and Napili Bay to name a few.

The drive down to Kihei and the southern beaches is also short and it's worth visiting those areas, but you'll want to return back to Ka'anapali and the cooler weather with the lush green, tropical feel at the end of your day.

There are so many things to do close by! Beaches...so many beaches! Each one is unique and more beautiful than the last. Activities such as surfing, snorkeling, diving, parasailing, boat trips, ziplining and horseback riding abound!

You can walk to the grocery store, shave ice, coffee shop, fish tacos, water sports rental, and the best farmer's market. You don't need a car, but we'd recommend one if you want to get out and really see Maui (Haleakala, road to Hana). I have a great guest book of recommendations in the condo for you and I also send all renters a list of suggested activities. It has received rave reviews!

The best place for whale watching on the island? Our condo! We provide top of the line binoculars (not needed to see the whales, but these get you in for a closer look), a completely private covered lanai, and nature provides amazing whale watching! You will see dozens if you visit in season. No matter what time of year you visit, you'll see our resident sea turtles, fish and rays on the reef directly below the lanai. Nothing beats relaxing after a day of adventure and watching the surfers end their day along with the sunset. Guaranteed perfection. Every. Single. Time.

Much Aloha!

About Christine and John Higgins

Christine is a former special education teacher and high school principal. She is now an educational software sales executive in Hawaii. Christine works with all of the schools throughout the islands. Christine's husband John is a CPA and works with local clients on Maui.

We have two children, Hunter and Hailey (ages 16 and 14) and a little dog, Gizmo, and currently reside in Napili,-just down the road from our gorgeous Ka'anapali Beach condo. We fell so in love with Maui after we purchased the condo that we decided to move here! We love Maui! We are less than five minutes away if you need anything at all while you are on island :-)

Christine and John Higgins purchased this condo in 2014

Why Christine and John Higgins chose Lahaina

We found Maui Kai and fell in love with the VIEW and the whales on Christmas of 2013. We were looking for a piece of paradise to call our own (and share with others!) and happened upon Maui Kai when there was a sudden cancellation in unit #604 next door. Our realtor happened to be listing #603 and it was fate! We put in an offer immediately.

What makes this condo unique

The view, the whales and turtles- Ka'anapali Beach and the friendly staff. Maui Kai feels like ohana (family) to us.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We loved everything about the condo, especially the room and the view! Everything was excellent. The bed was comfortable. The price and value was wonderful. We can't wait to come back!

Best view on the island!!

  • 5 of 5

This studio condo was wonderful. My daughters (13&17) enjoyed our stay at Maui Kai. We spent most of our time on the beach to the left of the condo. This place has everything you would need to enjoy your Maui vacation! Even snorkel fins! The binoculars were an added plus. We saw whales daily and loved watching the surfers. I would stay here again!! Thank you so much for a wonderful experience I will cherish with my daughters forever!

Beautiful View

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in unit 603 at the Maui Kai for 3 nights and enjoyed the ocean view from the unit and balcony. Saw whales and dolphins each day (March 2018 visit) along with surfers, paddle boarders, kayakers, etc. A stunning sunset the first night was a special treat, a terrific and unobstructed view. Even with balcony doors closed and the AC on you could hear the ocean!

The unit itself was pleasant, well furnished, kitchen had been recently remodeled and the central AC worked well and was appreciated. The Murphy bed was comfortable and good size for sleeping, however we did not try to convert it back to a couch for watching tv in the evening. Bathroom is small, dark and the shower floor was slippery but worked out ok. Nice table for two and a closet with room to hang clothes and well equipped with various items for guest use including beach chairs, umbrella and coolers. Elevators worked well and were fast and there is a washer and dryer behind the elevator on the sixth floor.

Parking was ample and close to the building, and quick access to Airport Beach through a gate to the public beach access at the end of the parking area. You can get on the boardwalk there and walk down to Whalers Village or to Dukes restaurant close by.

The building is old, showing some age and needs updating but is well maintained and in good repair. Pool is small and we didn’t use it, too crowded. Office staff very nice, pleasant and helpful. Daily cleaning with light housekeeping and fresh towels was unexpected but appreciated.

I forget a wallet in the safe when we checked out and didn’t realize until we were at the airport but fortunately, Betty, from the office, took care of the problem and sent priority mail promptly which we were very thankful for. So the people that manage the property really do care about their guests and will go out of their way to help you. The owners as well were very nice to work with and answered questions thoroughly and promptly.

Enjoyed our stay and would return again, good value.

Clean spot, great location

  • 5 of 5

We normally stay at Mahana next door to Maui Kai, so this is a close second to our go-to. This unit was clean and had everything we needed, just wish there was a washer dryer in the room.

Will definitely stay here again in the future and will recommend to anyone headed to Kaanapali.

A Place to Relax

  • 5 of 5

We went to Maui for the first time - We did lots of activities but will have to say the highlight of our trip was just sitting on the Patio - having breakfast or dinner watching the whales with beautiful sunrises or sunsets - was even fun the one evening when the storms came in - lighting and thunder with rain going sideways. -- our best dinner was one we prepared ourselves with fish that we had caught that day.
