About Daphne and Peter Wolf

We are New Jersey natives with Irish, Scottish and English roots. Peter is a freelance writer and photographer and Daphne is writing her dissertation for a PhD in Irish History at Drew University in Madison, NJ. We have two grown children, Patrick and Casey.

Daphne and Peter Wolf purchased this house in 2001

Why Daphne and Peter Wolf chose Ballinskelligs

We first saw this house in 1998 on a visit to Ireland and were overwhelmed by the spectacular view. It belonged to a cousin of Peter's mother and when he passed away we purchased it and renovated it with lots of help from other cousins living nearby.

What makes this house unique

Besides the proximity of one of the best golf courses in Ireland, Waterville Links, we enjoy the beach in Ballinskelligs, hikes around the countryside and the quiet, peaceful beauty on all sides.

NO internet or WiFi in house, but there are many hot spots available nearby. You can also purchase a USB mobile broadband stick or a mobile WiFi hot spot device at a Vodaphone store or online. Works great! NO telephone in the house, mobile/cell phone recommended.

Quaint authentically Irish

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this home, the view was beyond spectacular. It was definitely an true Irish home. Very small to US standards (I LOVED IT) I am already planning a trip back ! (Very small roads, and a bit of a drive from BIG cities but that's exactly what we wanted and were not disappointed)

Rustic hideaway in a remote and beautiful corner of Kerry

  • 5 of 5

If you want to escape from it all in a remote spot surrounded by unspoiled beauty, and would like a taste of authentic old Irish rustic country living, then look no further; if you're looking for a luxury condo with all the modern gizmos, then you're looking for a different kind of holiday (and probably a different part of Ireland!) This historic cottage has thick stone walls, thin wooden interior ones, and has been enhanced by a spacious modern sun-room which boasts breathtaking views; the rest of the cottage is functional, rustic, with lots of character, and a remarkable amount of appliances and furniture for such a small space. Seven of us managed just fine (parents plus 5 kids aged 12 to 4) for three nights.

As a base camp for forays into Kerry it suits well, but you'll want to leave early for longer forays to the Dingle Peninsula, etc; it's only minutes from the Ring of Kerry and even less from the Skellig Ring. Lots of suggestions of places to go are supplied by the owners. As other reviewers have mentioned, it is well worth the 20 minute hike to the top of the hill where there is a beautiful view of St Finian's bay and the famous Skellig rocks. It is also located on a dark sky preserve, so if you get a cloudless night, the stars are amazing. The housekeeper was most helpful (once we located her house!) and there was an ample supply of peat turf and supplies for the fireplace provided, as well as some nice touches (lots of extra bedding, basic supplies like eta and coffee, fishing nets for rock-pooling, a body board and even a wet suit were to be found).

No Wifi, but that's a good thing, in my book. Nevertheless, we were surprised to have a flawless 3G signal our whole trip (why you'd want to bring your smart phone with you to a place like Kerry and still call it a holiday is beyond me anyway. Except maybe for the GPS...)

Good shopping available in Caherciveen about 10-15 minutes away. Be aware that food prices down here tend to be a lot higher than in less remote parts of the country, so we recommend bringing plenty of supplies with you if you're on a tight budget.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, and would go back in a heartbeat.

Convenient and beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six spent three nights at the home. When we arrived, it was foggy and rainy with no view. So when we woke up the next morning and saw the gorgeous pasture views we were doubly impressed. We climbed the hill behind the house, which is definitely a must for the view. We drove around the Skellig Ring and Ring of Kerry and visited Killareny National Park. There is so much to do around the home. The property is just secluded enough to make you feel like you are escaping the tour bus crowds, but the location is extremely convenient to anything you could want. Bring earplugs if you sleep in the room with the water tank and it's fine. The kids loved watching the sheep and thinking up names for them. The weather even cleared up enough for us to see the Skelligs.

A comfortable farmhouse in a beautiful location.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Tig John for three nights right before the New Year holiday. We had some travel delays the first night so did not arrive until 10:30 pm. Eileen, the property manager/caretaker, was fantastic and very flexible in helping us make arrangements to get the keys.

When we got there we were delighted to find a house that has clearly been loved by generations. There was an ample supply of peat for the stoves, and space heaters to help beat the winter chill. I think the only complaint I had was that, although the kitchen was well stocked, i struggled a little with lack of counter space. The beds were very comfortable and I highly advise that you try to climb the hill behind the house. It's a bit of a climb, but well worth it. The views are amazing.

A couple of things we learned:

- Finding the house for the first time after dark can be challenging. Try to get there before nightfall.

- Starting peat fires can be challenging (even with instructions). Be patient and keep trying. The stove in the sitting room is much easier to get going.

- Eileen is a font of information about things to do/see locally. :)

Cosy, comfortable cottage with stunning views

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic stay in the heart of the Kerry with great access to beaches, stunning cliffs and the mountains. The cottage is clean and cosy, with plenty of space and comfortable beds and furniture. The views from the conservatory are amazing and hard to leave! The owners provide great communication with great help available locally if it is required. I couldn't think of a more homely or pleasant place to stay.

Ideal location to unwind and enjoy the Kingdom of Kerry

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a property that is secluded, charismatic and with stunning views this is one for you. I've been going to Ballinskelligs for over 35years due to family connections. We had to make a visit at very shot notice but Daphne was incredibly responsive and flexible. Nothing was too much bother and her local contact, Eileen is lovely. We had 10 nights at this property and it just felt like home from the first night. Highly recommended for an authentic Irish experiences.
