5 BEDROOMS - SLEEPS 8 Vintage Flat - Central Halifax

This vintage flat is in the heart of the city with everything you might need a block away on Quinpool Rd. The Atlantic Superstore, Pharmacies, Canadian Tire, Nova Scotia Liquor Commission and entertainment, pubs, shops and the best restaurants in Halifax.

The house is about 120 years old with tall ceilings and original Douglas Fir (painted) woodwork. There are five furnished bedrooms that occupy two floors and all are large, cozy and comfortable to stretch out and relax.

The kitchen has everything for a sit-down meal. It serves as the social hub as the rooms take up the rest of the space in the flat. There is no living room. I installed quality "top-of-the-steps (baby) gate" for families with young children or for babies who are learning to explore in a safely.

The main 2nd floor has has 3 large bedrooms - there are two rooms on the 3rd floor sought after for privacy. The maximum available sleeping capacity in the 5 bedrooms is 7 adults, 1 little person and a baby. :)

The old-fashioned kitchen has the original cedar floor boards. The table with red chairs and stools gives this fully equipped kitchen all you need for making a sit-down meal. I have a baby-highchair depending on your need for them. I also have 2 travel beds for babies. There are 3 flat screen TVs - 32 inch.

The main bathroom was renovated this spring 2015 and is a small bathroom when compared to today's standards. There is even a smaller a half bathroom on the 3rd floor with a washtub for hand-laundry. There is no washer and dryer on this site but there is a laundry mat two blocks away.

The QEII Hospital is across street on Robie and downtown to historic waterfront is 20 minutes by foot - it takes you along route of the Halifax Commons and Skating Oval; Children's Playground and wading pool, a Skate Board Park; the Museum of Natural History and the Public (Victorian) Gardens. All of these sites appeal to different groups of people visiting Halifax.

The Universities i.e., Saint Mary’s, Dalhousie, and Nascad, English as a Alternate Language Schools and Business Colleges are close. The Canadian Museum of Immigration and Pier 21 are national treasures. Cabs take two minutes to arrive at the door on Pepperell Street.

Next to Citadel Hill, the corner of Pepperell Street and Robie is the 2nd highest spot in Halifax for a view of the city that overlooks the Common Roots Urban Farm, which is used in part for raising vegetables to support our city food bank. My family, friends and neighbours all garden there. You can browse Common Roots urban farm at your leisure . . . :)

About Paulette Raymond

I have been hosting visitors to Halifax on business, conference, study and summer holiday for over twenty years. As the "owner/occupier of this 2-unit house", I have lived in the ground floor flat for 23 years and managed the upper furnished flat. I am an educator by profession, and a modern-day innkeeper as a way of life.

Most people will say this accommodation is in the best location ever because you can go in any direction to restaurants, groceries, cultural and historic events, performing arts and sight-seeing, business and banking and green space - the ocean air is at your doorstep. On a misty summer night you can hear the fog horn.

Paulette Raymond purchased this house in 1994

Why Paulette Raymond chose Halifax

This property is in the heart of the city when it comes to walking, dining, entertainment, business and sightseeing. There is no question - this is the best location is the city.

The five furnished bedrooms are large with good workspace, closets, lighting and desks. Three rooms are on the second floor - two with queen beds and one double beds. Two rooms on the 3rd floor are large loft-like furnished rooms with double beds.

For those who don't mind, the kitchen is a maritime tradition where lots of fun occurs. The bedrooms occupy the rest of the space as there is no living room - socializing in the kitchen happens. :)

What makes this house unique

This property is unique in that the century old woodwork and doors are the original throughout the house. The old cast iron radiators add charm in every room with the mix of vintage furnishings.

This flat has been host to groups of people attending weddings, graduations, conferences, family reunions, and festivals in the performing and visual arts.

Vacationers usually use this flat as a jumping off point to explore Halifax and real countryside with unique history and diverse landscape in other parts of Nova Scotia - like the Annapolis Valley - 1 hour's drive - amazing countryside - cows in pastures; the South Shore - white sandy beaches; and Cape Breton - fabulous mountain and coastal scenery and home to international music-makers.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

Great location, charming place. We moved to the apartment short-notice after another property did not work out. The owner was very accommodating and helpful, providing towels, coffee and tea. The apartment was quiet and clean and walking distance to downtown, restaurants, bars and grocery store. My colleagues and I stayed there for a conference and it was great to have large bedrooms, desks and internet access. I would definitely go back.

We enjoyed the close proximity to restaurants, shopping and the water front. The suite is really clean with new carpets and great beds. Thanks Paulette for sharing your great home.

Nice cozy stay

  • 4 of 5

Spacious bedrooms and kitchen. Close to downtown attractions. Perfect for students or tourists. We were able to sleep 4 adults and 4 children no problem. Does not have a livingroom, but kitchen can be used as a common visiting room for the adults.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

The place was clean and comfortable and easy to get to. Paulette was accessible and easy going. We wished more of the windows could be opened to take advantage of the lovely cool air, but were stuck with AC in several rooms. Also, there was no living room or space for our family to gather, other than the kitchen. Best for a bunch of unrelated adults who want to do their own thing in their rooms when not out on the town. We loved Halifax!

Car: not necessary

This location is where walking in all directions are modes to amenities. In a partly residential neighbourhood in downtown Halifax, this vintage flat on Pepperell Street runs parallel to Quinpool Road and is perpendicular to Robie Street. Landmarks include the Queen Elizabeth Health Sciences Centre II - Hospital; Halifax Commons and Citadel Hill; Skating Oval; Skate Board Park; Children's' Playground with wading pool on the Halifax Commons; The Public Gardens, and the Museum of Natural History; Atlantic Hotel Fine Dining and a host of fine food venues around the corner on Quinpool Rd. Universities: Kings College; Dalhousie; Saint Mary's and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design are within waking distance. Quinpool Road has Atlantic Superstore; Canadian Tire; Shoppers and other Pharmacies; and the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission. If you want the best and most diverse food in town go to Quinpool Rd.

Spring Garden Rd for shopping is the best on the peninsula - Historic Properties has fine or casual dining. Small businesses, local artisans and uniques boutiques and stores offer their goods all the way down to the waterfront - a twenty-five minute walk. It is a treat to be a tourist on the Halifax boardwalk, which is home to the Bluenose II - our infamous Schooner known around the world in "the age of tall ships".

The Halifax Shopping Centre, Dartmouth Crossing and Mic Mac Mc Mall are under fifteen minutes by car if you want a day of shopping. Halifax's Farmers Market next to Pier 21 has local and fresh everything including the wares of artists and artisans from our surrounding community. Canadian Museum of Immigration opened in June 2015 after a renovation to expand the history of Pier 21. Besides the exhibits this pier has the perfect view of the Halifax Harbour - a magical event any time of year.
