About Mirko Bechstedt

Baby Blue Cabana was built in 2014 in the lot behind our beachfront Blue Moon Cabana. We put our hearts and souls into the cabana and wanted to build a place that fit with the culture of Hopkins. It was important to us to create a space that was comfortable and included all the things we would want ourselves in a rental cabana in Belize. We are not into the resort experience and value the local culture and people of Hopkins. We leave the resort-type experience to the places south of the village. Mirko, who lives nearby Baby Blue and Blue Moon Cabana is available to assist guests with all their needs during their stay, including transfer to and from the airport (and other locations) and arranging tours and other adventures for guests.

Mirko Bechstedt purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Mirko Bechstedt chose Hopkins

Hopkins is a laid back village with beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea and Maya Mountains on the other side. Hopkins has a rich cultural life --and traditional Garifuna life is evident throughout the village.

What makes this cabin unique

Baby Blue Cabana is centrally located in the village which allows us to soak up the rich cultural life of the village. Local restaurants and other popular establishments are within walking distance from the cabana, but guests can also rent bicycles to get around, too. The cabana itself is steps from the sea and enjoys fabulous breezes directly from the sea. Hopkins is a great base to enjoy day and half-day trips to the jungle, mountains, and cayes. In addition to relaxing on the veranda or on the beach, there are so many adventures to enjoy in and around the village.

We found everything we were looking for and more staying in Baby Blue Cabana. You're in the center of Hopkins village - restaurants, grocery stores, etc. - yet have complete privacy when relaxing on the porch no more than 50 steps from the sea. Hopkins village is a gem for those who are interested in taking in local culture. Locals are gracious in imparting the history of the area and the Garifuna people to anyone that asks. The nearby restaurants are excellent and we particularly enjoyed Luba - just a 5 minute walk down the beach. We also got delicious local dishes at Innies. Mirko and his staff are readily available if you need them for anything, including arranging any day trips, transfers, etc. Although my husband and I's many ambitious plans were thwarted by the comfort of lounging on the porch of Baby Blue enjoying the view. We did manage to get our lazy butts up for a fishing/snorkeling day with Lincon (phenomenal) and some tubing and hiking at Coxcombe jaguar sanctuary. There's a few other rentals we saw on our walks on the beach but Baby Blue was by far the best for it's location and privacy - not an easy combination to come by. Will definitely be back.

beautiful, well equipped, excellent location, perfect size!

  • 5 of 5

Baby Blue Cabana is just the right size and location for relaxing and sporting beach. Mirko and his staff were helpful in facilitating a balance of adventure and resting on the beach. The porch was a great spot for breezy breaks from the sun. Worn out every day, we slept shortly after sundown to birdsongs.

We loved it!

This was the perfect place for our week in Hopkins! The location was just what we were looking for. We loved being in town and able to walk to everything. It was everything we expected and more. Siomara's across the street does a delicious breakfast. We ate there twice! Supermarket and fruit stand are across the street. Mirko was great host and arranged the ATM cave tour and a snorkel/fishing tour for us. We would definately stay here again. One drawback about being in town were the noisy birds and the rooster who would wake us up very early. After a couple days, we slept right through it. Would love to go back to Hopkins and stay here again!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review! It sounds like you definitely got into the spirit of Hopkins and made the most of your time in Belize. If we can figure out a way to train the local birds to sleep in we will :) But on the plus side, seeing the sun rise over the ocean does take away some of the that morning sting.

My husband I stayed here for our 20th anniversary. I truly loved the Baby Blue Cabana it was perfect. We felt very safe and secure. It was close to restaurants bars and right on the ocean. We rented a motorcycle an explored. The cabana was very clean and Mirko was always just a text away. He was very easy to get a hold of. We received a basket of fruit in the cabana and Mirko had stocked it with some starter essentials (s&p coffee filters etc). The town is "real living" which I loved- not very touristy. You will hear dogs barking at night and maybe some chickens in the morning. Don't expect it to be like Cancun. It was perfect for us and I would recommend it.

Baby blue cabana

  • 4 of 5

Though I gave 4 stars there were definitely some issues. This cabana was very sweet, comfortable and the kitchen was quite adequate for breakfast and mid-day snacks. I would not have attempted to cook a full complicated meal--nonetheless perfect for our needs. The beach was a stones throw for swimming and beach walking. And Mirko was very accommodating and respectful.

The downsides:

It is located behind a bar which is not stated so nightimes could be loud, and doesn't really appear to be a bar that is much fun or interesting.

The bed was AWFUL! Though they were apparently in the process of getting a new one.

And, there is a rooster right behind the window that does not know what time it is. It started crowing at 2 in the morning somewhat endlessly through the night.

Owner's Response: Thank you for bringing the bed to our attention. We have a new mattress now, unfortunately we weren't able to get them in prior to your stay. The village can be a lively place, but usually not so much as to be a be a nuisance to our guests. We will look into if anything can be done to the privacy wall around the cabana to help with this.
