About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 3.25 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

From the cozy indoor fireplace or outdoor hot tub, relax in this private sanctuary while enjoying the magnificent views of the Rogue River, dramatic gardens with 550 feet of river frontage, not to mention a Japanese tea house, gazebo and secluded safari camp in the adjoining gardens. The main house has 2500 square feet of professionally-designed interiors, a private dock, with a 1000 square-foot studio and 2500 square feet of decking.

This estate-like setting has three separate bedrooms in the main house and detached studio with its own deck, outdoor grill, dining table, and chairs. Walls of glass with magnificent river views surround the spacious main-living room, atrium dining room, fully-equipped kitchen, and more rooms. A lower level with a private entrance has its own bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, and sitting room. Doors open directly from all levels to the adjoining decks for day and night-time enjoyment; luxurious gardens and walkways surround the residences with a two-car garage and ample off-street parking.

Enclosed in seclusion with elegant interiors and surrounded by beauty, you are but minutes from wineries and fine restaurants. Or spend your time by bird watching (osprey and an occasional eagle to Red-tailed Hawks, swallows, and many more), fishing for trout or salmon, strolling through the extensive property, or just barbequing with dining on the decks. You will become entranced in the serenity of this one-of-a-kind experience.

Conveniently located one mile from I-5, historic Jacksonville, its Britt Festival, Ashland (with its Oregon Shakespeare Festival), and a variety of different activities are within your easy drive.

About The Owner

Dennis and Judy purchased the river house in 2001 and have transformed the acreage into beautiful gardens (English and Japanese) with a gazebo, safari camp, Japanese tea house, walkways, and an estate-like setting. Dennis is a retired attorney, professor, and writer with 20 books published. Judy retired after 32 years working for the USPS. We live only 30 minutes away that allows us to maintain the properties and gardens plus enjoying the river’s serenity. We take pleasure in sharing its beauty and ambiance with our guests.

The Owner purchased this estate in 2001

Why The Owner chose Southern Oregon

Having lived in Ashland for eight years before, we knew we wanted a Rogue River frontage property. This particular one was located far away from the Savage Rapids and Gold Ray dams that eventually were to be removed--their final removal didn't affect this location at all. Located outside of Gold Hill and towards Rogue River, this property offered the irrigation, acreage, and river frontage--plus the incredible structures that we desired. This is a very unique property, continually maintained and kept in a pristine condition.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Kevin--“Dear Judy and Dennis: Thank you for a lovely locale for a scattered family to enjoy Christmas together. Your beautiful home made the usual geographical separation irrelevant.” Nancy--“How do I start? A feast for the eyes, a feast for the soul. This is your incredible abode. Thank you for sharing. Our family had a fantastic--relaxing, fun, healing, laughing, crying, bird watching, collectible enjoying, eating, sleeping, soaking--time.”

VRBO Bear relaxing in the beautiful living room

VRBO Bear stayed here

Aug 22, 2005

This bear found a delightful retreat in Southern Oregon. This beautiful home is conveniently located off Interstate 5, near Gold Hill. Here you’ll find plenty of room for a little bear like me to roam in a very peaceful setting. Whether you are grilling or enjoying the hot tub on the multi-level deck, you will love this serene oasis that over looks the Rogue River, complete with it’s own private dock. This elegantly decorated hideaway has every modern convenience. It has a Jen-Air kitchen, cable TV, internet access, washer and dryer, fireplace and exceptional décor. There is room enough for up to 8 guests. There are 2 bedrooms in the main floor, a third bedroom is located downstairs with a private entrance. It also has a detached studio that provides a luxurious private living area next to your private two car garage.. This secluded refuge is just 15 minutes from Medford or Grants Pass, and just minutes away from shopping and many fine restaurants. You can also go hiking, biking, and horseback riding, or boating in this beautiful area. You’ll know you have definitely struck "gold" in Gold Hill when you visit this VRBO property. Signed, VRBO Bear

Perfect Family Getaway - Wonderful Property

  • 5 of 5

We had our two adult children with us and had a wonderful family vacation. Judy was a gracious host and had all kinds of helpful notes around the house. The location was very handy to interstate 5 but the house had an Oregon feel to it as it sits right on the river. Each person had their own space and bathroom which was very nice. The price is extremely fair for the quality of the accommodations. I highly recommend staying here if you are going to explore Southern Oregon. We were able to get to Crater Laker 90min, Lake in the Woods, 60 min, Grants Pass for the Hellgate Boat Ride, 15 min, Hiking at Upper Table Rock 25 min and several trips to Medford for dinner 20 min. It is easy to get everywhere from here.

Owner's Response: Thank you. We are proud of Southern Oregon and all it has to offer. The location of the river house is a great mid-way retreat for most of the popular activities in our area.

Amazing estate with so much to explore

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing property in which you could easily spend your entire vacation without leaving the property. Everything you need is provided other than meals. The gardens were absolutely delightful with special spaces such as walkways and statuary. Our host Judy was a delight and so helpful. This is definitely somewhere we hope to make a return visit. Just cannot say enough to fully express what a wonderful home this is. Very highly recommended.

Unique, Large property

  • 5 of 5

The river front home is sprawling with beautiful garden areas and living spaces. We enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the wildlife all around us. The home has all the modern conveniences you would need. Judy was so kind to give us a tour of the property when we arrived.

Zen River Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Wow. My husband and I and our two grown sons came for a vacation getaway. My sister and her beau were able to stop by for a night, down from B.C. Canada. We were all amazed at the variety of places to hang out on the property. There were so many and each had it's own personality. The studio was superb. the room on the first floor was it's own little hideaway. My sons loved having their own space. The river was grand. So many patios to choose from to just sit and watch the water go by which I loved to do in the mornings. We chose a very hot week, but kept inside and just chilled during the hottest part of the day. We used the hot tub in the middle of the night. There were fun and interesting collections of artifacts to see everywhere you turn from around the world. They have a large collection of music CD's to choose from. The kitchen cupboards were packed full of so many dishes and serving ware. We found plenty of towels, extra supplies if needed, such as paper towels or toilet paper and Kleenex. We didn't lack for anything. Judy met us and gave the tour. She was really sweet and concerned because of the heat wave. She wants to make sure you have a good time. We really got our monies worth and you can't say that very often these days. The river access was on the difficult side, some steep steps, but there are many nearby parks and access areas to the water. We definitely would recommend this place to anyone and we are thankful to have shared this fabulous retreat. Don't forget to go on the Rogue River jet boat rides, so much fun! Thank you Judy and Dennis.

Beautiful house, Amazing location, a lot of thought was put into this property

  • 5 of 5

Judy and Denis are two wonderful hosts. They have created a one of a kind experience. From the Japanese tea house to the safari bungalow, the detail that Judy has put into the decoration is astounding. Around every comer there is a new area to explore and theme to enjoy. Everything was well kept, clean and there are many helpful labels to guide you on how to work the laundry to which light switches light which areas. Everyone that stayed at the house was blown away and many are planning on returning.

What a TREASURE!

  • 5 of 5

This property was more than I could ever imagine and the description does not do it justice. The house/units, the gardens, and pathways, the sitting areas and the Safari Hut and Japanese Tea Room were all wonderful places to get lost in your imagination and feel safe to explore. Not to mention the AMAZING river, 24/7! I'd been looking for a peaceful, tranquil, and rejuvenating place for some respite and inspiration and I got it all while staying at this property. I also got the chance to talk to the owners, Dennis and Judy, to learn about the history of the property, the River and surrounding town. They have created their dream on this property and am so glad they are sharing it with other people.Amazing people, Amazing place! I love this place and will be back in the future. I highly recommend this experience for anyone looking to escape the busy life, yet still have all the modern amenities and mother nature at your fingertips or looking for some fun and adventure, doing river sports and/or other activities. This place is well cared for, clean and represents one of a kind beauty in every room and every area along the property.
