Overview

About the property

25 minutes from Kentucky Horse Park! All things Horse, Bourbon & Cycling

In the gently rolling Bourbon county hills between Paris and Cynthiana, travelling down a gated crunchy gravel drive a red barn comes into view – a surprising hideaway.

Unexpected, modern serenity awaits you on the other side of the traditional barn doors. A bright, airy, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area with a high ceiling all feels uncluttered, peaceful, and inviting. Relax. Sink into a chair with a book, or kick back on the sofa. Underfloor heating keeps things cozy on cold nights, while central air-conditioning and ceiling fans ensure comfort in the summer.

Multiple sun-drenched windows offer far reaching pastoral views and amazing sunrises and sunsets. Outside patio and sitting areas bring you even closer to the natural beauty of the land and are a perfect spot for a quiet morning coffee or tea, or to socialize with others over pre-dinner drinks.

The European-modern kitchen with island seating is a well-equipped place to gather, whether simply making plans for the day over breakfast, lining up wine glasses and snacks for an afternoon nibble, or preparing a savory dinner (feast) for friends and family.

At the end of the day, two spacious boutique bedrooms await you. Fall into bed, adjust the firmness to your liking, and drift off to good night’s sleep. Also, two modern, aesthetic bathrooms offer luxuriating rain style showers, lovely soaps and plentiful towels.

Whether you are avid cyclists, a romantic couple, a family, or group of friends looking to spend time together, this is a special get-away-from-it-all place. It is just the spot for lovers of the outdoors and those who enjoy something a little different than the norm.

Days out might include a visit to one of the famous horse farms, Claiborne Farm, The Kentucky Horse Park, a wager at the race track, stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, and Craft Bourbon Trail, local shopping, The Ark Encounter, The Creation Museum, golf & fishing, hiking at The Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge state park or simply exploring the history and rural beauty of the bluegrass. Just lovely.

About Gwen Dever

Gwen, native Kentuckian, organic vegetable farmer, bourbon tour guide, loves to cook, comes alive when meeting new people, and volunteers for several organizations in Paris, Ky. Mark, originally from Williamsburg, Virginia, loves Kentucky for it's pastoral views, excellent cycling roads, and Bourbon whiskey. Both enjoy travelling wherever it may take them, domestic or international with a penchant for Italy and the UK.

Gwen Dever purchased this farmhouse in 2014

Why Gwen Dever chose Cynthiana

We fell in love with Bourbon County, Kentucky long before we lived in its look-alike cousin, Wiltshire, England, for five lovely years. Our plan several years ago was to buy this Kentucky pasture (37 acres of gorgeous views and fertile soil), build a homestead and live out our years tending to the earth, our animals and ourselves.

The lovely town of Paris is 6 miles away and while we could use that as our base for most of our needs, with Lexington only 30 minutes away we knew we were set. We almost did exactly that, but with just a few changes. Whilst living in England, we bought a historic home in beautiful downtown Paris, Kentucky, rented it to others while we were away, and then moved into that house upon our return from England. Now, since it is not yet the time to retire, you will find Gwen tending to the earth at the farm while Mark is at the office (bringing home the bacon).

We now have a barn at the farm! Well, this barn is just a bit different as it includes an apartment and a farm kitchen to suit our changing needs. The barn allows us to get on with it, and to rent the apartment to others who enjoy gorgeous country views, relaxing atmosphere, small town living, sweet country cycling roads, and all things Bourbon and Horse! We know our friends and family love to visit the area, and we know you will, too. We love to hear the stories of your stay and adventures at week’s end. Come see us!

What makes this farmhouse unique

At The Barn you enjoy the serenity and beauty of the countryside all the while enjoying the European modern decor inside. The outdoor seating areas bring you directly in touch with Mother Nature. A perfect retreat if you usually live in a congested area- relax and take in the wonder of Bourbon County and its surrounds. Horse, bourbon, wine, beer, cycling, shopping, history, all these appealing pursuits are catered to here!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you! We enjoyed our stay...a lot. We walked in the fields every day and saw meadowlarks, thrushes, mockingbirds, bluebirds, and the ubiquitous red-winged blackbirds. We loved hearing all of their songs. I even enjoyed that powerful rain and wind on Wednesday night, it reminded me of the Southern Indiana thunderstorms of my youth. We made it to Buffalo Trace Distillery. Great suggestion. Loved eating at Biancki's in Cynthiana, Thyme in Paris and Fava in Georgetown; ate more pie than I've eaten collectively in the past 20 years. The baking in Wisconsin is in its infancy compared to these Kentucky folks. We definitely stimulated the Bourbon economy; could not get enough of driving on the narrow shoulders roads gawking at all of the horse farms. Totally unbelievable! We bought carrot cake jam (!), white grits, and 'polenta' from the Bourbon County Farmers' Market to take back home (along with the Bourbon). Thank you, thank you! We had a splendid 4 nights in your sumptuous, fabulous red barn on the hill.

Peaceful country setting and lovely home.

  • 5 of 5

The country setting is peaceful. The home is lovely and clean and perfectly furnished. Gwen is a generous hostess and provided everything we needed for a comfortable stay, including a well-stocked kitchen —with some things other VRBOs we’ve stayed in didn’t have like small appliances and gadgets (measuring cups, blender, mixer, toaster, etc.), along with a few pantry items (like spices), EVERYTHING for the coffee lovers in our group, and a wide variety of dishes, pots and pans—and extra towels and bed linens if needed, firewood and grilling equipment for the fire pit or gas grill and a patio table and chairs for sitting outside and enjoying the peaceful countryside. The home is close to a variety of attractions, many within a half-hour drive. We enjoyed berry picking at Reeds Valley Farm (5 miles or less), The Ark Encounter, The Kentucky Horse Park, golfing, lunch and window shopping in Paris, a nearby playground, and walks around the property.

The Barn is a wonderful place to stay! Nestled in the hills of Kentucky.

  • 5 of 5

The Barn is located close enough to tourist attractions in Lexington and Georgetown but far enough into the country to see the beautiful cattle and horse ranches. It’s located in a very peaceful area where you can have your morning coffee on the porch and watch the cattle graze. The Barn is fully stocked with everything you could possibly need while away from home and if you need something I am sure Gwen would help you get it. The Barn is the perfect place if you want a place to relax, some peace and quiet and not be surrounded by other tourists. I have rented numerous times but this is the cutest, cleanest and most unique place I have ever stayed at. I hope to come back again and thank Gwen for sharing her Barn!

We really enjoyed our stay here. The setting is great in the middle of pastures with cows grazing just outside the yard. The inside of the house is impeccable with all kinds of extra amenities. We can't wait to come back some day. Just a beautiful area and house.
