Overview

About the property

25 minutes from Kentucky Horse Park! All things Horse, Bourbon & Cycling

In the gently rolling Bourbon county hills between Paris and Cynthiana, travelling down a gated crunchy gravel drive a red barn comes into view – a surprising hideaway.

Unexpected, modern serenity awaits you on the other side of the traditional barn doors. A bright, airy, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area with a high ceiling all feels uncluttered, peaceful, and inviting. Relax. Sink into a chair with a book, or kick back on the sofa. Underfloor heating keeps things cozy on cold nights, while central air-conditioning and ceiling fans ensure comfort in the summer.

Multiple sun-drenched windows offer far reaching pastoral views and amazing sunrises and sunsets. Outside patio and sitting areas bring you even closer to the natural beauty of the land and are a perfect spot for a quiet morning coffee or tea, or to socialize with others over pre-dinner drinks.

The European-modern kitchen with island seating is a well-equipped place to gather, whether simply making plans for the day over breakfast, lining up wine glasses and snacks for an afternoon nibble, or preparing a savory dinner (feast) for friends and family.

At the end of the day, two spacious boutique bedrooms await you. Fall into bed, adjust the firmness to your liking, and drift off to good night’s sleep. Also, two modern, aesthetic bathrooms offer luxuriating rain style showers, lovely soaps and plentiful towels.

Whether you are avid cyclists, a romantic couple, a family, or group of friends looking to spend time together, this is a special get-away-from-it-all place. It is just the spot for lovers of the outdoors and those who enjoy something a little different than the norm.

Days out might include a visit to one of the famous horse farms, The Kentucky Horse Park, a wager at the race track, stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, local shopping, The Ark Encounter, The Creation Museum, or simply exploring the history and rural beauty of the bluegrass. Just lovely.

About Gwen Dever

Gwen, native Kentuckian, organic vegetable farmer, bourbon tour guide, loves to cook, comes alive when meeting new people, and volunteers for several organizations in Paris, Ky. Mark, originally from Williamsburg, Virginia, loves Kentucky for it's pastoral views, excellent cycling roads, and Bourbon whiskey. Both enjoy travelling wherever it may take them, domestic or international with a penchant for Italy and the UK.

Gwen Dever purchased this farmhouse in 2014

Why Gwen Dever chose Kentucky

We fell in love with Bourbon County, Kentucky long before we lived in its look-alike cousin, Wiltshire, England, for five lovely years. Our plan several years ago was to buy this Kentucky pasture (37 acres of gorgeous views and fertile soil), build a homestead and live out our years tending to the earth, our animals and ourselves.

The lovely town of Paris is 6 miles away and while we could use that as our base for most of our needs, with Lexington only 30 minutes away we knew we were set. We almost did exactly that, but with just a few changes. Whilst living in England, we bought a historic home in beautiful downtown Paris, Kentucky, rented it to others while we were away, and then moved into that house upon our return from England. Now, since it is not yet the time to retire, you will find Gwen tending to the earth at the farm while Mark is at the office (bringing home the bacon).

We now have a barn at the farm! Well, this barn is just a bit different as it includes an apartment and a farm kitchen to suit our changing needs. The barn allows us to get on with it, and to rent the apartment to others who enjoy gorgeous country views, relaxing atmosphere, small town living, sweet country cycling roads, and all things Bourbon and Horse! We know our friends and family love to visit the area, and we know you will, too. We love to hear the stories of your stay and adventures at week’s end. Come see us!

What makes this farmhouse unique

At The Barn you enjoy the serenity and beauty of the countryside all the while enjoying the European modern decor inside. The outdoor seating areas bring you directly in touch with Mother Nature. A perfect retreat if you usually live in a congested area- relax and take in the wonder of Bourbon County and its surrounds. Horse, bourbon, wine, beer, cycling, shopping, history, all these appealing pursuits are catered to here!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you! We enjoyed our stay...a lot. We walked in the fields every day and saw meadowlarks, thrushes, mockingbirds, bluebirds, and the ubiquitous red-winged blackbirds. We loved hearing all of their songs. I even enjoyed that powerful rain and wind on Wednesday night, it reminded me of the Southern Indiana thunderstorms of my youth. We made it to Buffalo Trace Distillery. Great suggestion. Loved eating at Biancki's in Cynthiana, Thyme in Paris and Fava in Georgetown; ate more pie than I've eaten collectively in the past 20 years. The baking in Wisconsin is in its infancy compared to these Kentucky folks. We definitely stimulated the Bourbon economy; could not get enough of driving on the narrow shoulders roads gawking at all of the horse farms. Totally unbelievable! We bought carrot cake jam (!), white grits, and 'polenta' from the Bourbon County Farmers' Market to take back home (along with the Bourbon). Thank you, thank you! We had a splendid 4 nights in your sumptuous, fabulous red barn on the hill.

Amazing

  • 5 of 5

The place is magical! Its set up in a beautiful area surrounded by farms. We were greeted by Gwen and shown around the house and property. The house had everything you can possibly need to relax and enjoy the stay, from an espresso machine to home grown tomatoes. We had a little one with us who had the most fun we've ever seen him have. Mornings started with cool dew and cows mooing on the neighbouring farm, in the afternoons we enjoyed the sun and running around bare foot on the soft grass, along with visiting the town of Paris. Farm located 45 minutes from the Ark Encounter Museum that we visited. In the evening we spent time by the calming and warming fire place. The barn itself is not what you would really expect from the name or looks of It. It is very modern, has heated floors, glass showers, and very comfortable beds ( hard to decide to stay in bed a bit longer or get outside to enjoy the morning on the farm ). It has it all. We enjoyed everything about it and had hard time to leave this serenity.

Owner's Response: Oh, I so loved meeting you and your family! your little one had started exploring even before I left you. I do hope you got a photo of him on Thor, the tractor. If not, come on back sometime! Thank you for trusting The Barn for your family holiday! (Psst...we are kinda into the Nespresso, too!) ❤️

I can not imagine, more gracious hosts! Place was Beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

This whole experience, was amazing. From pre-arrival communication, to saying good-bye. Gwen (the host), was simply fantastic. Probably one of the nicest people you'll meet!

The house was great! Sits off the road a bit, with a view of farmland, and country side. Rooms in this house are very nice! Her husband and her did a absolutely fantastic job designing, and furnishings this home. Everything was very nice, from sleep number beds, to the designer ceiling fans, this house was beautiful.

One of our favorite features however, was actually not even in the house! They have an awesome brick laid fire pit in the yard. We spent quite a bit of time each evening, grilling hot dogs, making s'mores, and sipping bourbon. by this fire pit. The host even provides you with all the fire wood you need, to make this as easy as possible. If you stay here, just do it!

I am saying this with 100% honestly, next time I am in this area, I hope this barn is available, because we will defiantly stay again.

Awesome!

This property is wonderful! New, clean, and beautiful! Living room, full kitchen, eating area, two big bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a laundry room. Outside is beautiful as well. It was fun to see the cows and babies! There's a fire pit and covered porch. It's in the perfect location for horse lovers! There are many things to see and do near this location. Of course many horse activities, bourbon distilleries, small towns to shop, Ark Encounter. we could have stayed longer and I would love to come back! The owner was a wonderful help in suggesting some interesting things to do! Highly recommend. Can't say enough great things about this property! You won't be disappointed!!
