About Vicki and David Bartz

This is picture of my Mother and Father taken in 1944. My mother's family moved from Gregory, SD to Custer in the 1940s. This picture was taken before my dad went to the AAC pre-flight school. After the war, my folks moved to Southern California, but chose to retire in the Black Hills near my mom's large extended family (13 siblings!). In 2003, they moved here to purchase "Grandma's House in the Woods," which our son loves to call it. Both my father and mother wanted others to enjoy the home and setting my mom loves best.

Sincerely, Vicki (the owner's daughter)

Vicki and David Bartz purchased this house in 2002

Why Vicki and David Bartz chose Custer

This property has the unique characteristics of all the wonderful, rugged aspects of the beautiful South Dakota Black Hills, but with the close proximity to everything you would need from town. The drive to Custer is only 6-7 minutes away. Picture sitting in the morning with a cup of coffee on the spacious front porch or patio by the fountain, watching deer, or maybe flocks of wild turkeys grazing on the five acre property. Or watching the moon rise in the evenings or the milky way. It is one of the more peaceful places you will ever go, and a great "home base" for your tour of the Southern Hills.

What makes this house unique

When you want to get away to sightsee, you could not ask for a more convenient place from which to visit the most beautiful sights and attractions in western South Dakota such as: Two beautiful hours to Devil's Tower National Monument, Wyoming and about the same to Badlands National Park to the east; One hour 20 minutes to historic Deadwood, SD; One hour and a half to Sturgis, rally headquarters; 30 minutes to Mount Rushmore National Monument; 15 minutes to Crazy Horse Memorial; Only 10 minutes to the entrance to Custer State Park, one of the most beautiful state parks in the USA. If you bring your bicycle, we are only a 3 minute bike ride to the Mickelson Trail, which follows the old railroad bed from Edgemont north to Deadwood, SD. If you love golf, we are only a mile from the clubhouse of the lovely Custer Municipal Golf Course (our home is also just a short walk to the course). There are many more sights available to see in the Black Hills, Western South Dakota and Northeastern Wyoming, which are all close to our beautiful property. We hope you choose to make "Grandma's House in the Woods" your home away from home during your stay.

A relaxing retreat!

  • 5 of 5

This is a really well maintained place on a beautiful piece of property. It is ideally located for easy access to Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, and Custer State Park. The home offers all of the conveniences you could need and the owners are really easy to work with. We are already planning our next trip to Grandma's House! Thanks again Dave and Vicki!

Beautifully decorated, meticulously clean, lovely!

  • 5 of 5

What a location. Near the woods, only 2 minutes from town. Grandma's House is an adorable place to stay with everything you need to feel at home. We had a deer visit us several times a day out the window. Dave and Vicky were attentive to any needs that came up. Great for our family experiencing the Black Hills- 4 adults and 3 teens (grandpa and grandma too!) Thanks Bartz family.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer! Perfect location, clean and comfortable stay. Timlely and helpful communication from the owners before, during, and after our stay. We will surely recommend to anyone heading to Custer. Thanks for the great stay!

Great Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

We chose this place to stay because it was handicap accessible. David was very accommodating to our needs. The bathroom was huge. The kitchen was decorated so nicely. The beds were very comfortable. They supplied pretty much anything you needed or wanted from kitchen utensils to games and books. Their porch was a beautiful place to sit and relax and visit. The location was very convenient - just outside of Custer.

Amazing week at a Comfortable and Well-Equipped Home!

  • 5 of 5

Our 6 member family recently stayed at "Grandma's House in the Woods". The owner's were very friendly, extremely helpful and easy to get in touch with. They responded quickly to our questions.

The house was warm and inviting with nice furnishings both inside and out - comfortable beds, many seating areas, and a very well-equipped kitchen. Also appreciated were all the handy wall hooks, outlets, shelves, etc.

The large lawn was mowed so the children could run and play while we kept an eye on them from the front porch, patio, or through the many windows on the front and sides of the home. We all loved seeing the deer up so close. It felt like we were in the woods and yet very close to the town of Custer for shopping and restaurants. The grill and large picnic table were a hit too. We had a terrific time relaxing together and also visiting the many amazing attractions only a short drive away. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND this property!

Very charming home with all the amenities -close to Custer and bike trails-quiet and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Second time staying at Grandma's house in the woods-that should tell you something. We love the charming feel of this home-it was exactly what we were looking for-quiet and comfortable with all the amenities but close to town and many activities. The owner's were wonderful with working with our large group. We have told many friends and family of this great home to stay at when in the Custer area.
