About Vicki and David Bartz
This is a picture of David and Vicki in March 2018. We are the third owner of Grandma's house after Vicki's folks passed away a few years ago. Vicki's mother's family moved from Gregory, SD to Custer in the 1940s. Vicki's mom later met her her husband in Wisconsin, while caring for relatives there. After World War II, Vicki's folks moved to Southern California, but chose to retire in the Black Hills near her mom's large extended family (13 siblings!). In 2003, they moved here to purchase "Grandma's House in the Woods," which our son loves to call it. Both her father and mother wanted others to enjoy the home and setting mom loved best. Sincerely, Vicki and David Bartz
Vicki and David Bartz purchased this House in 2003
Why Vicki and David Bartz chose Custer
This property has the unique characteristics of all the wonderful, rugged aspects of the beautiful South Dakota Black Hills, but with the close proximity to everything you would need from town. The drive to Custer is only 6-7 minutes away. Picture sitting in the morning with a cup of coffee on the spacious front porch or patio by the fountain, watching deer, or maybe flocks of wild turkeys grazing on the five acre property. Or watching the moon rise in the evenings gazing at the milky way, with a glass of awesome South Dakota wine. Grandma's House is one of the most peaceful places you will ever go, and a great "home base" for your tour of the Southern Black Hills.
What makes this House unique
When you want to get away to sightsee, you could not ask for a more convenient place from which to visit the most beautiful sights and attractions in western South Dakota such as: Two beautiful hours to Devil's Tower National Monument, Wyoming and about the same to Badlands National Park to the east; One hour 20 minutes to historic Deadwood, SD; 80 minutes to Sturgis, rally headquarters; 30 minutes to Mount Rushmore National Monument; 15 minutes to Crazy Horse Memorial; Only 10 minutes to the entrance to Custer State Park, one of the most beautiful state parks in the USA. If you bring your bicycle, we are only a 3 minute bike ride to the Mickelson Trail, which follows the old railroad bed from Edgemont north to Deadwood, SD. If you love golf, we are only a mile from the clubhouse of the lovely Rocky Knolls Custer Municipal Golf Course (our home is also just a short walk to the course). There are many more sights available to see in the Black Hills, Western South Dakota and Northeastern Wyoming, which are all close to our beautiful property. We hope you choose to make "Grandma's House in the Woods" your home away from home during your stay.

From the moment my family and I pulled up, we knew we'd love our stay here. Well kept on the outside and on the inside with newer appliances (washer/dryer/etc.) and had plenty of inventory for anything we might need (within reason). Beautiful scenery outside with deer, jack-rabbit, etc. My kids (16, 10, & 9) enjoyed their time as did my wife and I. The owners were very attentive to email/text with very useful tips, support, etc. If I ever go back to that area, this will be my first place to "look up" to stay again.
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in Grandma's House and enjoyed our wildlife, as well as the comfort and hospitality our home provides. We hope you and your family will return soon. Thank you!
Grandma's House in the Woods is a gem
David and Vicki worked with us to get us into Grandma's house in the woods when our plans changed and we wanted to get to the Black Hills sooner. Upon entering the house we were pleasantly surprised by the comfort and cleanliness of the whole place.. we arrived during a rainstorm so it was nice to park in the garage to unload. It's on a street where there's no through traffic so it is a private setting. The yard is great and there's plenty of seating outside on the porches. The bed and sofa were comfortable and it was great to kick back in the evenings after a day hiking in the Hills. The best part about this home other than its owners is the close proximity to Custer.. We will definitely request a stay here in the future!
Folks, it was very nice to interact with you and to get to know you a little before and during your stay. We hope you and your little Jack had a wonderful time in the Hills and you are certainly welcome to return to Grandma's House any time. Safe travels.
Trip to Custer
The Grandma's House in the Woods was great. Quiet and secluded, at the same time only 1.5 mile away from downtown Custer. We enjoyed our stay at the house and we will definitely be back!!!
Thank you so much for staying in our home and letting us know what you thought of Grandma's House in the Woods. We hope you had a most wonderful trip to the Black Hills and will return soon. Please keep us in mind next time you travel to our beautiful part of this country.
Great place to stay near Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Jewel and Wind Caves
This house is the perfect location to vacation in SW SD area and visit the area sites. It was such a blessing to be able to return to Grandma's House in the Woods for an evening dinner and family time. The house sits on the edge of the woods in a small neighborhood with 3 bedrooms and a loft. It is fully equipped with linens, towels, and kitchen equipment. We especially appreciated the crock pot! Thank you for sharing your home with us!
Carol, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay in the Black Hills and at Grandma's House. Our guests are the most important part of our business and if you are happy, we are happy! Thank you so much for your nice review.
Can’t do it all!
The perfect location of this property makes it difficult to decide what adventure you will take next. There are so many places to see and things to do in the area, you will soon realize that you can’t do it all, at least not within a week or two. There are amazing adventures awaiting within a short driving distance In every direction. Even if the weather doesn’t cooperate with your plans, sitting on the covered porches and just watching the wildlife in the yard is fantastic in itself. In the last three years we have spent over 30 days here, and still have a long list of things we would still like to do. Whether you want adventure or to just sit back and relax in amazing surroundings, Grandma’s House in the Woods is your destination.
Mark, thank you so much for your nice comments. We hope you and your family will keep your tradition going in the Black Hills, as you escape from the Texas heat.
