Two cabins and great fishing!
There are two cabins with sleeping potential of 15-20 guests. The main cabin has 2 bathrooms and there is 1 in the guest cabin. Heat/AC with a kitchen are available in both cabins. Laundry can be done in the main cabin. Protected forest surrounding much of this loon inhabited bay makes for a relaxing day of kayaking and pontooning. Fishing from the two 24 foot docks on 156 feet of shoreline is a real kid pleaser. There is a large fire pit area to sit and stare into the fire or roast a marshmallow.
Fish Trap Lake is known for great fishing that includes all species.

About Brad Meints
My wife and I both grew up on farms in rural Minnesota and enjoyed time on the beautiful lakes in the area. We met at Chiropractic college, married, had 2 kids and settled on a farm in SE Minnesota. We have a busy 3 doctor clinic that services health needs in our area.
Brad Meints purchased this Cabin in 2010
Why Brad Meints chose Scandia Valley
Our family has always enjoyed the ambiance of a pristine Minnesota lake. We wanted to enjoy the mournful cry of loons while we sipped our morning coffee or glided silently through the water on a kayak. This cabin has spectacular views of the lake while being surrounded by protected forest land. It captured our imagination and our hearts when we first walked on site so we bought this little slice of heaven.
What makes this Cabin unique
When we walked in through the front door we were immediately drawn to a panoramic view of the lake. We stood for a time just taking in the view. The cabins are all knotty pine inside with rough quarter sawn logs outside to give the true feel of a north woods experience yet within 25 miles of Brainard, Mn. Much of the surrounding area is protected forest for hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing or birdwatching. The lake is very clean but I needed to have loons for us to consider buying the property. We love the loons! We were also amazed at the amount of room we had for guest with 2 cabins on site. Both cabins had all the amenities we needed including AC and laundry. We are thankful to be able to own this property and excited to share it with others.

The cabin is very nice wth many options for sleeping a large family.
We had a great time with our extended family. The only drawback is that there is not a gradual slope into the lake. There are many steps down to the water. It's a great location, quiet neighborhood, and a paved road for taking a scenic walk or bike ride.
Great Stay on Fish Trap Lake
We enjoyed every minute. There were 17 of us. Enough room for everyone. . Brad Meints and his wife have thought of everything. Very clean well equipped cabins. Water toys, tubes, paddle boat, canoe, kayaks, life jackets, beautiful campfire spot, everything for an enjoyable stay. No one wanted to leave.
The only thing we would have changed is, more screens on the doors. We would have had the doors open in the evenings for the great breezes off the lake.
All around this is a wonderful location, clean spacious, well equipped cabins and a beautiful lake.
Great family getaway
The property was exactly as advertised and ready for our arrival. There were 15 of us (8 adults, 7 kids ages 6-14) and there was plenty of room for everyone. We could all be together in the main living area, but could still easily find a quiet spot.
The water was clear and the swimming area between the docks was a huge hit. The loons were abundant and could be heard every morning and evening. With all the sliders, the views are great but it would get very warm inside throughout the day. A few curtains to help block the midday sun while we were out on the lake could be beneficial.
Kids were able to catch sunfish off the dock, took out the paddle boat every morning and kayaked around most days. We brought two boats (fish/ski and 22' pontoon) and were able to use the second dock without any issues. The public ramp is as far away from the cabin as possible, but that was hardly cause for concern. We enjoyed a campfire most nights but if you have not been to northern Minnesota in the summer before be sure to bring plenty of bug spray.
Overall the property was a great place for our family getaway and we are planning to come back again next summer.
Finally Found Our Family Destination
We had a four day family get together, 9 adults, 6 kids, and a dog, ages 7-69, and everyone had a wonderful time. There was rain our first night, but with how spacious the layout is, you never felt crowded. The lake is beautiful, with bays that make it feel even more private. Several of us kayaked for the first time, and loved it! Plenty of life jackets, games, chairs, dishes... we had more than we needed. We've been trying to find that perfect spot for fishing, recreational boating, relaxing, and entertaining for the last 5 years and we all gave a unanimous yes to make Brad and Kristine's cabin our family destination. They were also very quick to respond to any questions we had. Rain or shine, you will have a great vacation here.
Not what we were expecting.
The view of lake, swimming, yard & fire pit were all as expected with plenty of room for the 6 grandchildren ages 5-12 to play & swim. The down side, the guest house has 5 sliding doors with no screens and no other windows. There are no window coverings on the lower level of the main house if you want to sleep downstairs. The main house has 14 sliding doors and only one screen. There are a few windows but only 1/4 of them have screens so you can't open them up, so the air is on all the time. We think of a lake home having open windows at night to take in the fresh air. The open stairway inside to the lower level has no hand railings. We were not told that one refrigerator was not working, there was a "out of order" sign on it, but we did receive a rebate for that. There is no trash pickup & no microwave, we just assumed there would be. I was extremely disappointed. Our five adult children said "it is what it is, try to make the best of it". I was hoping for a place to go year after year but this is not it for us.
We have taken these comments very seriously and plan to add screens to the 14 patio doors.
The down stairs has had window coverings added in the sleeping area and another private bedroom will be added. Trash service was added this year and has been appreciated by our current guests. The refrigerator has been replaced with a brand new one. We are constantly trying to improve the quality of the stay for our guests and will continue to do so as honest critiques like this one are fielded. Thank you for your help!!
Great potential for large family gatherings
This place has excellent potential to be a premier gathering spot for large or extended families/groups (jr. high age and older). Many quality features in the setting, location, buildings and amenities are the perfect combo for relaxation and entertainment.
This property is located 25 miles SW of Brainard, Mn with an array of shopping, antiquing, fishing and relaxation opportunities. Although not a true backwoods location, the surrounding forest and lower population density make it feel like you are truly away from it all. There is also opportunity for ice fishing, snowmobiling and hunting should you be lucky enough to draw a Camp Ripley tag.
