About Roger & Elaine Karabin

I grew up coming to this area for vacations. My father and uncle bought the old Ingham Farm in 1953 which was about a mile from the Cottage. Every summer vacation and long weekends we traveled up from Connecticut to be here. My wife and I grew up in Plainville, CT. We married in September, l981. Having an appreciation for preserving old things we purchased a 1780 Cape in Plymouth, Ct that needed much restoration and tender loving care. The labor of love began and continued in Maine with the purchase of the Cottage. 'Work details' with friends and family were ongoing through holiday weekends and vacation time. Everyone contributed their talents combining outings and pleasure with everything we experienced. The camaraderie of our friends and family runs deep in the fabric of the Maine experience and what made the Cottage such a special place. We began renting the Cottage in 1994 during the months of July and August. Many families return each year making their own special memories. They thank us for sharing a piece of heaven and that they feel like they are coming home. Now that we are retired, we spend a great deal of time year round at our other home on Ingham Pond.

Roger & Elaine Karabin purchased this cottage in 1975

Why Roger & Elaine Karabin chose Mount Vernon

When I purchased the Cottage in 1975 it did not look anything like it looks today. After getting married in 1981 we started to fix it up. We had no power or running water and the only way to get to it was by boat. We hauled everything by boat. Food, water, propane for the gas lights and gas refrigerator, along with runs to the emergency room were all done by boat. Many times these trips were made at night in the fog and rain. Some of the best northern lights sightings we experienced were spotted on clear nights during these trips. Once our sons arrived we purchased the property behind us and decided to build a road and bring in power. That was in 1991. The following year the old camp was dismantled [except the front wall where the picture window is located]. We designed and built the present day cottage.

The fields that you travel through on the way to the Cottage were not there when we purchased the property. It was all woods. An ole timer told us that when he was a kid the entire side of the hill was pasture and that the view was fabulous. So in 1994 we clear cut the land and brought it back to fields. This was a massive undertaking but the finished product was well worth it. Through the years we acquired adjacent properties to increase our holdings and prevent any potential development.

In 2001 we purchased an old camp to the east of the Cottage. We dismantled the old camp and designed and built an Adirondack style home on the site. This is a year round home and home to our youngest son. We all greatly enjoy the peace and serenity of the Ingham Pond area.

What makes this cottage unique

One cannot fully explain all the benefits that the Cottage has to offer. You really have to experience being here. One feature that our guests like, is the ability to be able to drive right up to the Cottage. For someone with difficulty walking, being able to walk in from the driveway without any steps is a plus along with a first floor bedroom and bathroom. This is why we have many guests that have returned every year for the past 15-20 years!! 2015 was our first year advertizing with VRBO.

This is our 4th year running staying at the Cottage on Ingham Pond. It is our happy place- the whole family greatly looks forward to this week every year, for it's peaceful and scenic beauty, and cozy, rustic comforts. Roger and Elaine are marvelous hosts. Can't wait for next year!

My husband and I, along with our dog Olive, had such a wonderful vacation at the cottage. We loved that not only that it was private but so peaceful! The cottage felt like home. This rental is a must if your vacation check list includes a clean cottage for R&R, sunsets, and outdoor adventure. We can not wait to stay again!!!

Beautiful cottage in the perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Roger and Elaine's cottage for a week and had an incredible time. The property is beautiful, private, and has everything you could want. The location on Ingham Pond is very quiet but is only a short boat ride from Long Pond. We loved listening to the loon family and watching them feed their two baby chicks and come right up to the dock. We saw otters in the stream almost every night as we returned to the cottage. We visited the field one night and I have never seen so many lightning bugs in my life. My daughter and our dog had an absolute blast swimming off the dock and my son and I spent a lot of time fishing off the dock or from the canoe. We loved cruising on Long Pond but honestly by the end of the week we were happy to stay on Ingham Pond and just enjoy the peace and quiet and the beautiful sunsets. The owners are very friendly and welcoming and Roger even called to check in and make sure we had everything we needed. The cottage isn't very big but with 4 of us plus the dog we were very comfortable. This was one of our best vacations ever and we cant wait to go back.

Ah sweet seclusion

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is beautiful, well maintained, nicely furnished and well equipped with almost anything you could want or need. The property is massive and awe inspiring. The driveway from the road to the cabin are quite steep but the views you get make it completely worth it. Highly recommend it if you're looking for peace and quiet. Roger was wonderful and always available to answer any questions. Hopefully we will be returning to stay sometime again.

A best kept secret that hopefully remains a secret

  • 5 of 5

How can you describe perfection? We arrived through the gates to a view that made my wife yell at me to stop the car so she could take pictures of the gorgeous water view as you enter the property. Driving down the lane to the cottage you slowly go back to a simpler way of life. A wonderful week of good food from the kitchen and grill, great sunset views, and communing with nature especially the family of Loons that visit daily. Great kayaking in Ingham pond, swimming, floating in the inner tubes and most importantly taking the paddle boat out for sunset on the pond. Great views of the water from the cottage which is decorated to share a family history of warmth and love from not only the owners but from everyone that has visited. The diary of those that have had the privilege to stay here reads like a non fiction novel. You get a rare insight into those that have stayed and grown up on this lovely property. We only hope we are able to visit once again.

Often referred to by our guests as "one of the areas best kept secrets" because of it's tranquil private setting, western exposure for beautiful sunsets and feeling like you are in a wildlife sanctuary. The private gated road leading through our fields to the Cottage offers the one of the best views in the Belgrade Lakes area. With the Cottage being situated on several hundred acres, we offer miles of private gravel roads and trails for mountain biking, walking the dog or taking a peaceful stroll and clearing the mind. Ingham Pond offers some of the best Pike, Large and Small mouth Bass and Black Crappie fishing in the Belgrade Lakes area. The Maine state record for Black Crappie was caught here on Ingham Pond.
