Hawthorn cottage at our Long Barn cottages has it all - high vaulted ceilings giving plenty of light. The latest in home entertainment systems, solid Oak flooring, beautifully crafted kitchen and delightfully furnished bedrooms. Hawthorn matches a truly modern interior to a delightful country setting.

Hawthorn is one of three recently built holiday cottages situated on the Trehill Estate in Callington SE Cornwall. There is an indoor pool, with a current machine creating a truly 'endless pool'. The leisure facilities, located just feet from your front door, also include a well-equipped gym & stunning hot tub. These are shared with the two other cottages (both have 2 bedrooms & can be combined for larger parties).
There is also a private outdoor Jacuzzi hot tub with lovely countryside views. There is an extra charge of £80/wk & £60/short break.

Our two fishing ponds are a major attraction. These are private ponds with only guests being able to fish. This keeps them in great condition and means there are always plenty of spots available. Stocked fish include Carp, Mirror Carp and Tench. Top fish weight is about 17lbs

There is a double bedroom (king bed) and a twin with en-suite bathrooms. The rear door gives out onto the extra large deck with its own barbecue.

Hawthorn is one of three Long Barn Cottages on the 4 acre Trehill Estate. The grounds are shared with the 4 Trehill Cottages although the indoor pool, hot tub & gym are exclusive to Long Barn cottages.

Trehill cottages (separated from Long Barn cottages by a tall hedge) is made up of 4 stone built farm buildings.
There is plenty to do at Trehill with two fishing ponds games room and large grounds

Additionally the three Long Barn Cottages have their own private health and leisure facilities just a few feet from your front door.

Delightful second visit

This was our second visit here & it was every bit as good as the first. Pool & gym are exceptionally equipped for such a small cottage set up. The Endless Pool machine is fantastic. The cottage is warm & ver well furnished with nice views from both front and back. We will be back

Pleasant stay

Going away just after lock down was lifted we knew it would be challenging. But can't help but feel that customer service and the personal touch was lacking greatly. We got the impression it was about the money and not after a great holiday experience. The place needs a bit of TLC, especially the furniture. Everything creaks and is need of decorating. One room never got used as the bed was so creaking and uncomfortable. Ants nests all over the patio. We Understand that there is a pandemic and limiting contact us paramount but little touches like sachet salt and pepper wpuld have gone a long away as the shop wasn't in walking distance. Late check in of 1630 and early checkout of 0930 kind of shortens your holiday aswell. Sanitation doesn't take that long to do on a property. Maybe invest in a few more housekeeping staff.

We felt that communication with the owner could have been better. He seemed more interested in his convenience rather than guests experience. 24 hours notice was required to use the pool which was a little excessive. Also this had to be done via email although the owner lived 30 yards away. This was not made clear beforehand. The outdoor pool was more of a paddling pool at 2.6ft deep. Grounds very nice as photos show. Unfortunately the inside of the property was disappointing and needed some TLC. Shower in ensuite was unused as it was mouldy. Spills visable on floors and tables sticky. Floors extremely creaky Five star price for two star accomodation.

We are sorry that this guest did not enjoy their stay as much as they should have done. For the benefit of future guests, there are a number of things we feel should be pointed out. These would be our "Golden Rules" for enjoying a self catered holiday stay. 1 - Read the listing. We make it quite clear what size the outdoor pool is, so if that is not what you are seeking, you might want to look elsewhere. 2 - Read the info you are sent out. We have always operated a booking system for the indoor pool and most guests prefer it. We use email as this makes it easier to ensure that guest requests are not lost. We do not open the booking window until 24 hrs prior. This makes sure that everyone gets an opportunity to book the best slots. But guests can book anytime after that, both the day before and the day of. 3- Understand what you are paying for. This guest was in a party of 4 people in a large cottage sleeping 8 in mid summer. They paid a total of approx £2000. Now this might seem expensive for 4 people, but we do not price by the number of occupants. The cottage sleeps 8 people. It has its own outdoor hot tub, free on site fishing, access to indoor and outdoor pools an gym and a well equipped games rom. If you can find similar accommodation anywhere in Cornwall for the summer at a lower price, we would be extremely surprised. However for a party of 4 who had no interest in fishing, and were not particularly bothered about a pool, this may not have seemed like great value. Put simply, they should not have booked. All these facilities cost significant sums to build and maintain. You will be paying for them in some way. Finally in response to his criticisms of the property... Mould - quite simply not true. Bathrooms are cleaned and demoulded each week. We cannot say that every single bathroom is mould free, but no bathroom has ever been "unusable". This is quite simply a gross exaggeration. Communication - funnily enough there is still a pandemic going on. In response to government and industry guidelines we recommend that contact is made electronically whenever possible. We are however on site most days if anyone prefers speaking to us in person. We find that most people in any case come on holiday to spend time with family, not property owners. Creaky floors - these are solid oak wooden floors. Of course they will creak every now and again, but it is not like the "haunted house"!

Marvellous winter holiday

Thoroughly enjoyed our winter break here. Cottage was very comfortable and warm. Grounds were immaculate & we still managed to catch a few fish even though it was winter. Really enjoyed the pool and hot tub. Thank you!

My family of 9 including 6 adults, 9/2/1 year old grandchildren. Stayed in the Hawthorn Cottage. With slides, swimming pool, games room fishing and a donkey to feed . Everyone was happy. Thank you!!!

The heating is not working all the time in the night time, the hot water not working 24/7 and on tv there is one chanel. What's the point to have a big tv only for a program. Water in the swimming pool was cold and inside the swimming pool area cold as well. For the price you pay I wasn't impressed. The only good think was that was very quiet.

We are sorry these guests did not enjoy their stay as much as you might have liked. However we would like to correct the slightly misleading elements of your review. We wish that you had contacted us regarding these issues as they are easy to fix. The pool is heated to standard industry temperatures, but we would have been happy to alter those if you had asked. The cottage is heated by a boiler which you could have altered at any time. Instructions are in the cottages, but again if you had asked we would have been more than happy to help. Regarding the TV, it does work on all freeview channels. Again if you had contacted us we would have helped you understand how it works. For future guests reading this review we would ask you to bear in mind that most issues guests have are fixable. However we cannot fix what we are not aware of. So if you stay with us, or someone else & there is something that is not right, tell the owners/managers about it. We cannot promise we will always be able to fix things, but we can promise, that we will try.

wonderful place

Stopped at the Hawthorn cottage, which is the largest of the Long Barn cottages for a late half term get away. The whole family (myself, husband & 4 children) had a fabulous time. The cottage itself is very comfortable and furnished with a clean, modern design. Wood flooring, plenty of leather sofas. The granite kitchen was maybe a bit small but had everything we needed including an extra large fridge. All very nice. We never felt the need to check how to work the heating as it was always warm. The bedrooms were good size for a holiday home and we enjoyed having a wetroom attached to our bedroom. Although you sometimes do need to use the squeegee after a shower. This was no problem. The rather large TV was great for watching the supplied videos & we even had a BBQ one afternoon. Views from both front and back were very nice. The pool and gym were exceptional. The gym was small, but very well equipped, with a step machine, boke, treadmill and a multi-gym. Although the kids were not allowed to use it. The pool and hot tub were brill. The endless pool machine (once we were shown how to use it) was so simple to use & provided great entertainment (and even a bit of exercise). Although the pool is small, this machine more than compensated. The grounds themselves are lovely, with space to play football, donkeys, fishing (we didn’t fish but plenty of others wre & seemd to be catching quite a few) and a large games room. This was a real highlight with table tennis, table football (both free) and air hockey. There are supermarkets and pubs nearby (although nothing in walking distance) and the place was easy to find. A recommended place to stay.

Tolles Haus mit kleinen Mängeln

Das Cottage ist idyllisch gelegen - ca. 2 km außerhalb von Callington. 8 Personen haben hier gut Platz. Im Eingangsbereich hängt eine Liste (was man alles nicht darf). Es war z.B. strikt verboten, dass unsere Kinder (10 und 16 Jahre alt) allein in den Pool durften. Hier wurde auch genau darauf geachtet. Auf der Terrasse gibt es einen Grill. Leider sind Tisch und Stühle schon recht in die Jahre gekommen bzw. sehen sehr verwittert aus. Das Wohnzimmer hat einen riesigen Fernseher und ca. 100 DVD sowie Tischspiele und Bücher sind in ausreichenden Mengen vorhanden. Die Küche bietet alle Utensilien, die man zu Kochen benötigt. Leider sind die Badezimmer schimmelig. Deshalb würde ich hier nicht von "Luxus-Cottage" reden.

Wonderful cottage, great facilities

Came with extended family in all 3 long barn cottages (see separate review for how that worked). This is a lovely place to stay. Indoor pool and grounds were great. Cottage itself spacious comfy and warm.

Great family cottage - with good indoor facilities

This was our second visit to this location. We stayed at the big cottage for my mum's 80th & thought we would return with just our family. Place is just perfect - really beautiful décor. Loved having the pool & gym right on site. Even tried out the swimming machine which was a blast once we worked how to set the speed right. Would definitely come back. Neville and Frances were very helpful & it was lovely and warm even on a cold February half term.

luxury all the way

what a lovely place. Came here for my 30th with 3 other couples & it was just perfect. Grounds lovely, donkeys were my best friends for life & the pool & hot tub just divine. I didn't use the gym but friends did & said although small the equipment was really good. Beautifully furnished & appreciated the wine chiller vfridge much! Boys enjoyed the fishing which as it vwas right by front door, meant that we never felt deserted.

Wonderful location for family break

Despite the weather, we had a superb time at long Barn cottages. The grounds (when it wasn't raining) were gorgeous & the kids loved the donkeys, indoor pool & trampoline. Hubby loved the gym outside our front door & the hot tub was just great when it rained (which it did a lot that weekend). The cottage itself is really nice with a fantastic massive TV which we all watched DVDs on. Really coundn't have asked for more. Would definitely recommend

wonderful half term break

Just such a wonderful place to stay. We were right by the lake, so we could just walk out for a spot of fishing. The indoor pool was just a few feet away & the kids loved the swimming machine. Hot tub & gym were good too. The cottage itself was really nice & warm. The massive TV was a real bonus. In short, couldn't have asked for anything else.

Wonderful lakeside retreat

Came here for a family get together before spending a week on the north coast alone with my husband. There were 8 of us and we really could not have wanted for anything. Hawthorn is lovely. This was more like a home (and a very nice one) thana holiday cottage. We loved the wood floor, wet rooms and designer kitchen. For us it was perfect as my husband loves to fish (the lake is just a few feet away and has lots of fish in it). And grown up children liked the gym and indoor pool and hot tub. Again just a few feet away. As noone else seemed to use it, it was ours for the whole week. My eldest does triathlons and he adored the swimming machine. There are supermarkets and pubs locally, but al over it was the quality of the house and the eat range of things to do that made it for us.
