Fossil Creek provides a relaxing environment for family and friends to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life and enjoy beautiful Kentucky woodlands. Our home is situated at the base of 65 wooded acres in Oldham County Kentucky. Its name comes from the plethora of fossils that can be seen in the creek that runs along the front of the property. Our place is great for couples, families, church groups and reunions. A secluded, private, rustic, rural villa. Fossil Creek is full of custom craftsmanship. The deck feels like you've stepped into a mountain lodge and offers quiet solitude from the normal busyness of life. Sit back, relax and listen to the creek, chickens, and other nature sounds. A screeching Red Tailed Hawk can sometimes be heard overhead. Enjoying an outdoor fireside chat with best friends makes you feel like your at a country villa.
The expansive great room provides rustic warmth with 100+ year old reclaimed barn wood flooring from Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Step into the bedrooms and you're walking on custom repurposed Thoroughbred Oak fencing from Lexington, KY horse farms.
The huge island countertops were constructed by artisans near Nashville, Tennessee. They rest on locally built Westport Custom Cabinets featured on (Website hidden by Airbnb)
Several bedrooms feature antique hand hewn barn timbers supporting lofts. Every kids dream space, but adults love it too. Don't miss the "Hobbit Loft" connecting three bedrooms.
Special considerations:
Fossil Creek is our special home and we ask that you please treat it kindly, so that we and others may enjoy it in perpetuity. If you notice anything that needs our attention, please let me know as soon as possible.
From time to time we need access to property for items in garage and to care for our animals. We’ll give you as much notice as possible. Thank you for your flexibility in this matter.
The kitchen and bathroom countertops require some TLC. The only cleaning product to be utilized on them is the spray bottle under the main kitchen sink, which contains 4 drops of Dawn, then filled with water. Cutting boards need to be used on the kitchen countertops.
The floors are all reclaimed barn wood and fencing. You may use the central vacuum, but please only use Bona if you clean them and wipe up any spills immediately.
The Wi-Fi is provided by nearby cell tower. Internet should only be used for email and light web browsing.
At the end of your stay, please put all dirty dishes in dishwasher and run it. Please take used sheets, pillow cases off beds and used towels and leave in laundry room. Please take out trash to large blue trash bins at back side of house. Please make sure all windows are shut, doors locked, and lights off. The cleaning fee is to provide you with a clean, fresh and ready to enjoy atmosphere, not to clean up your mess. Please be respectful and not leave our cleaning person a mess. Thank you.
Usually, there is no cell signal. This means relax! If you go on a hike up the hill, you may get lucky. I recommend WhatsApp to use your cell phone with the WiFi at the house. AT&T cell users have signal.
For your enjoyment and safety we ask that you follow the guidelines below:
Enjoy the spacious outside, woods, creek and trails, but please be careful. Wildlife abounds and natural dangers exist due to the rural nature of our farm. Remember, ALL ACTIVITIES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Please do not enter the goat field. They are friendly, but can be “pushy”. The one we call “Woodstock” likes to nibble and that can hurt.
Please keep out of any locked rooms.
The garage is off limits.
Please do not open the loft doors overlooking the kitchen.
Please save energy by turning off any lights that do not need to be used.
Please do not buy any movies on the premium channels. You are welcome to view movies stored in the leather ottoman.
If you are interested in having an event such as a birthday party, wedding, employee retreat, or executive getaway, please contact me for special pricing. For example, we hosted a "Manhood" ceremony on the deck feeding over 25 young men and fathers.
Bonfires and outdoor celebrations are possibilities as well. Enjoy camping? Multiple camping locations throughout the 65 acres provide rustic and private accommodations. Camping is only for guests renting house. Please Note: No swimming allowed in ponds. No hunting. Guests acknowledge participation in Any AND All OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AT OWN RISK.
Prior to listing our home, we had some long-term guests and they wrote some very kind words to us. They were fantastic guests and cared for our place as if it were their own. This is what they had to say...
"Our stay at Fossil Creek was an unexpected fairy tale that did NOT disappoint in any way! Our family was moving from Tennessee to Kentucky and we needed to find a place to board our small chicken flock. Our realtor reached out to her community and came back to us with the number for Kenn. Mind you, we were just looking for a place to board our chickens! Never in our wildest dreams would we expect what happened next. While I was on the phone talking with Mr. Kenn, he offered us the use of his extra chicken coop AND the privilege of staying on the same property as our chickens to make it easier for us to take care of them while we were transitioning and looking for a new home to buy. We were surprised. Then he sent us pictures of where we would be staying, and we were floored! The pictures did not do justice to the wonderland that awaited us. The charming, picturesque farmhouse contained every amenity you could possibly think of plus plenty of rooms and beds to sleep at least 20 people. The "Hobbit Hole" as my children loved to call it, was their favorite - a loft getaway that was just the right size for them. Up in the loft they could watch TV, play games and build with Leggos in their own space. From the gorgeous bathrooms, to the amazing kitchen and bedrooms, the stunning hardwood floors, the giant indoor/outdoor fireplace, and the perfect surroundings, we lived in luxurious comfort with plenty of room for a family of five to spread out, all winter long. The outside was just as magical as the inside! We loved standing outside on the generous deck with our morning coffee (when it wasn't too cold!) to watch the chickens and listen to the creek. We were spoiled with hiking, goats, chickens, trampoline jumping, creek exploration, hill swinging, and sledding. Because of the McFarland's, our transition to Kentucky was not only easy, but a blessing. For us, Kentucky means Fossil Creek and the benevolence of the McFarland family who allowed us, complete strangers, to reside within the beauty and hard work of their legacy. WHAT A GIFT!! We will never forget our time there."
Thank you for staying at Fossil Creek. Enjoy!
