Converted Barn in Moretonhampstead, Dartmoor, Devon - Modern, quiet location, close to open Moor and local amenities, free wifi
About Wendy Head
We are Mark, Wendy & Ellie and we live on Dartmoor in Devon with our hens and ducks. We owned holiday cottages in a nearby village for 12 years, then took a break to bring up our daughter. We had the opportunity to purchase property in Rock, Cornwall which have been successful as holiday rentals. We have now converted the barn which was the site of the original Manor House before it burnt down. It has a 'home from home' feel which is important so you can relax and enjoy your holiday. We have added things we have collected over the years to make it feel homely for our guests. If you wish to plan a two centre holiday we aim to provide short breaks at both location except in high season. We are nearby if needed but Cowshed has a private garden giving full seclusion for relaxation.
Wendy Head purchased this Barn in 2007
Why Wendy Head chose Moretonhampstead
We have lived on Dartmoor for many years and love the countryside, walks and the relaxed way of life. There is something for everyone, walking, cycling, sightseeing, National Trust property and access to the coast is within an hour. The Cowshed was converted during 2014 so provides a modern living space in a character building with lovely country views and a peaceful setting. A real get away from it all location yet still providing great places to eat and many places to visit. Cosmopolitan Exeter with its cathedral and beautiful old buildings, some still housing high street shops, is well worth a visit. Tour around Dartmoor in the car, on two wheels or on foot with a map! There are reservoirs, tors, rivers and woods as well as lovely villages usually with excellent tea rooms too.
What makes this Barn unique
We are conveniently located between Moretonhampstead and Chagford, both thriving moorland villages with lots going on. There are good pubs and restaurants, range of local shops, potteries and art galleries, swimming pools and a sports centre and immediate access to the moor. Within a few minutes by car you will be out on the open moor, head to Princetown to see the famous Dartmoor prison, see ponies along the way or stop for tea at Postbridge or Two Bridges.Cross the moor towards Hound Tor and Haytor and of course Widecombe-in-the -Moor with village green, tea rooms, pub and onto Dartmeet, more teas and good river parking. We can provide guests with local knowledge of where to go, especially the little gems that locals keep to themselves! Riding, fishing, cycling, shooting and many other activities can be accessed locally and if we know what you would like to do we can source some information for you and even book activities. Some bikes available, do please ask. The beaches at Teignmouth and Torbay are within a hour's drive, a little further are the stunning beaches and resorts of the South Hams, Dartmouth and Salcombe, Bigbury well worth a day trip. Tour over the moor to Princetown to see the prison and beautiful views and on to Tavistock with its bustling indoor market and unusual shops.

The Delightful Cow Shed
We had a wonderful few days staying at this property. It’s remarkably spacious, beautifully fitted out inside, has a lovely balcony to sit out on and also a walled garden area. Wendy and Mark were very friendly and welcoming. We will definitely go again!
Thank you it was lovely to meet you both and we are pleased you enjoyed the Cowshed and the area. The balcony is great for an evening drink or meal and catches the sun beautifully. Please do return we have lots more ideas for you for visits to places. Thank you
We really enjoyed our long weekend stay in this lovely property, with 2 children.
Very comfortable, modern and well furnished, plenty of room for four, with everything we needed. Enclosed wall garden lovely to sit in at night. Short drive to town for provisions. We enjoyed exploring the local Tors for "letterboxes".
Wendy and Mark are great hosts.
Would recommend and hope to be back.
Thank you for your review, so glad you enjoyed the Cowshed and the moor. There is so much to do, for children and adults and many people say they need a longer stay!
Thank you Wendy
Lovely get away
Lovely property, well appointed with lots of books for local walks etc. Very comfy bed and quiet location. Well located with most sights including Exeter accessible by car in 30 mins albeit some single track lanes which may be challenging for city dwellers! Local village 15 mins walk with nice pubs and small Coop.
Peaceful and spacious
Great location centrally located in Dartmoor. Close to Moretonhampstead for the pubs and restaurants. Big enough for a family to have a relaxing getaway. Wendy and Mark are great hosts and really look after their property well.
Thank you for your review, we are glad you had a good stay. Dartmoor is on the doorstep with high tors, rivers and villages to explore, on foot, bike or horse. Something for everyone and a relaxing place to come home to. Please do come again if you can.
Cow shed at Mortenhampsread - hosts: Wendy and Mark Head
The Cowshed, named for its use before renovation, is nothing short of the ideal getaway. The two story cottage is equipped with every modern convenience and is tastefully decorated throughout. Our hosts, Wendy and Mark were welcoming and made sure that we had everything we needed as well as advice on local sites and amenities. The location is private but close to grocery shopping, a great pub and incredible scenery and moor hikes. The only drawback is that this cottage spoiled us for every other accommodation.
Thank you Gerry and Judy it was so lovely to meet you both and from so far away. We enjoyed hearing about your visits to different places and all the hikes, you certainly packed a lot in and saw a great deal of Dartmoor. The Cowshed is an ideal base for walking, cycling (if you don't mind hills), touring and finding tors and rivers, and of course the Devon pubs. We hope you will be able to return to England as we have lots more places to suggest that you see.
