Dear Marci, After years of visiting Abiquiu area , staying at different locations, I knew I wanted to find one special place to "come home" to. I've looked at your website for two years and then it was "time" to come. Thank you so much for having the "home" available for us on our own "time" to once more enjoy this truly special place of light. Miss O'Keeffe's spirit visited me several times while here ~ in a way I can't explain, but know was just right for me ~ a sister soul and spirit of the white rose. Thank you for allowing us to share this wonderful Casita. Patty and Ken, Denver

Dear Marci: Thanks for sharing your beautiful Casita. Hope you don;t mind but we added to your collection of kitchen appliances. We brought an electric egg beater to make waffles, and the mixer decided it liked living in your house. Leaving here means I wil be able to use it when I come back again. Magical light, cozy house, perfect weekend. Thanks again! Emma, Denver

La Casita De Chocolate is located in the historical village of Abiquiu, New Mexico, right in the town center and located directly across from Georgia O'Keefe's home and studio. Not only did Marci do a beautiful restoration of this adobe home, it is tastefully well furnished, clean and very charming as Marci is herself. I had a wonderful stay and enjoyed visiting many places in the area, including Ghost Ranch, Monastery of Christ In The Desert, Plaza Blanca, Echo Amphitheater, as well as many great places to hike and enjoy the scenic views. Santa Fe is an hour drive and I enjoyed spending the day there as well. I was looking to get away from the busy crowds and find time to relax and enjoy the outdoors, and Marci's lovely home fit the bill perfectly. I look forward to coming back again.

It's extraordinarily beautiful on the inside. It's tastefully furnished with antiques and folk art. The location in the village of Abiquiu offered a glimpse of what life must have been like in the olden days. It's peaceful, quiet and private. The pure spring feed water was delicious. I highly recommend this property.

Dear Marci, May the simple words that all have read embrace you with love, peace and joy of this warm, beloved casita. The history of this home is incredible and the love and craftmanship given in rebuilding the original footprint is a remarkable journey. When you are here, drink in the beautiful walls and ceilings and flooring, as well as the sounds of the village and the aromatic heady scents of lavendar and pine. Be sure to visit Napoleon Garcia, as he is a descendant of the Genizaros, an original member of the village and a great storyteller. He makes wonderful ladders and carved figures. His son has the gallery located on the road behind the casita. The library is a treasure to visit with a wonderful book section. There are two full bookcases dedicted to Georgia O'Keeffe. The church is a beautiful, peaceful visit, with hand carved pews, statues and crucifix. The blessing of being across from Georgia O'Keeffe's home only adds to the beauty of this visit. Georgia O'Keeffe loved the village and her home is a MUST SEE. Now sightseeing is a usually personal choice, but visiting with the locals is the greatest gift. May your time here be spent in peace and love. I celebrated my birthday here ~ wonderful! Kristi Marci, I am glad that I returned to the village. You are a wonderful woman whose love of chocolate is wrapped throughout your loving, special touches in this home. May all those who enter receive peace and joy in your casita, Nancy

Wow, where do I start? La Casita de Chocolate is an work of art. Marci has put so much work into making the home as authentic as possible, yet with modern day conveniences. These photos show a lovely interior, but there is no way they come close to doing the casita justic. I don't know if a photo ever could. The mud walls are TO DIE for; a gorgeous, chocolate brown with golden bits of straw peeking through. We simply could not stop admiring them, and we marveled over them throughout our entire week's stay. If the lights are down you feel like you are in a warm cocoon, and it is very hard to go outdoors. Even with the lights on, and there are plenty of lights should you want to brighten things up, you may find it hard to tear yourself away from the comforts of casita living. Abiquiu is a very special town, and staying in La Casita, within the tiny village community, was a unique experience that anyone would enjoy. We had the absolute pleasure of meeting Marci, the casita owner. Marci is the most generous and wonderful host, and she truly cares that you are comfortable and having a magical time. She went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed, and she even gave us some wonderful suggestions for activities and hikes. So yes, we did manage to break free from the charm of the casita to enjoy several outings, all at Marci's recommendation. We began with a scheduled tour of Georgia O'Keeffe's home (via the museum), we took a hike to Plaza Blanca (breathtaking), enjoyed a drive out to Echo Canyon (incredible!), another little drive up to Chama (stopping for breakfast, again at Marci's recommendation, in Tierra Amarillo at the greatest coffee shop we've ever seen "3 Ravens"), and we also paid a visit to Lake Abiquiu for some hiking and swimming. Then there was the fabulous afternoon when we discovered a dirt road that ran alongside the Chama River and we drove bumpily along enjoying the lovely landscape before pulling off at an opening that allowed us to lounge along the riverbank and watch the sunset. We fell so in love with the Casita, Abiquiu, and our host Marci that we cannot wait to come back again next year!!!! We could have stayed forever, it was just that phenomenal.

If New Mexico is the Land of Enchantment, then this restored adobe, Casita Chocolate, is part of that enchantment. My friend and I spent three September days enjoying the house and rural hamlet of Abiquiu. The owner wisely left the house with much of its original appearance, with the massively thick straw-adobe walls, viga ceilings and old stone floors. Many of the furnishings are local Spanish colonial-style antiques. Yet there were all the amenities that we needed, such as very comfortable beds and a modern bathroom. The VRBO description says it accommodates 4-5 people. I think 5 would be a bit of a stretch. Also, the house might not work well for crawling babies or toddlers. The kitchen is old-fashioned, with a vintage gas stove reproduction. There is a small gravel patio surrounded by a coyote fence. We enjoyed our suppers out there, looking across at the huge trees in artist Georgia O'Keeffe's winter-spring property in Obiquiu. You can book tours of the grounds and house through the Abiquiu Inn less than a mile south on the highway. The inn also serves excellent food at its Abiquiu Cafe. We enjoyed morning walks on the country lanes running by the house, visiting the lovely church, and learning about the local people called the Genizaro and the Penitente traditions of northern New Mexico. About 25 miles north is the incredibly scenic Ghost Ranch, which we visited twice and toured many of the scenes that Georgia O'Keeffe painted during the years that she spent her springs and summers there.

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 2000

About the owner: Hello! I am Marci, the owner of La Casita de Chocolate en Abiquiu. I am a retired school teacher having taught at TISA, Taos Integrated School for the Arts, in 2011, Abiquiu Elemmentary and various other schools in Arizona, California and New Mexico. I am a member and former secretary of RASA, the Rio Arriba Stuntmen Association, which is a small group of people inerested in promoting and maintaining the cultural and historical significance of Northern New Mexico in the Old West 1880's -1900's. I am a mother of two sons who are in their twenties. My kids are both in college. One has just receieved his AA in Businessis and one is studying Renewable Energy, specicifically Wind Energy. Both are taking classes from the North American Wind Energy Program in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Both are artists. I love horses and dogs, and at the moment, have a five month old puppy. I live in Taos, but like to stay at the casita and visit my friends in Abiquiu, when it is not rented. I like to ski and ride, swim, travel, music and films. I learned how to water ski at the lake in Abiuqui. I like to browse the library in Abiquiu and talk with the neighbors and locals, for they have so much history to share about their familes and culture. Abiquiu is another world from Taos. They are both special, beautiful places, but the Casita in Abiquiu is estra special.

                  Why the Owner Chose Abiquiu:
Stepping into the kitchen of this old adobe in 1996 literally took my breath away. It smelled sweet. It looked like a wreck, 'a ruin with a roof,' but I could see major possibilities. The fact that it was in the village on a dirt road directy across form Miss O'Keeffe's intrigued me. I'm very happy to have it. Fate brought it to me.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
You will get to live in the heart of Abiquiu, right on the plaza, across from Miss O'Keeffe's, the church and the library. You can experience the birds and the coolness of the yard by sitting on the outside bancos or the table and chairs. The view of Miss O'Keeffe's yard is beautiful; the space is peaceful and serene. You can see into her yard in the wintertime, but the large trees block much of the view in the summertimes. Located on Old Stage Coach Road right downtown in Abiquiu. One of the best times I ever had was running around the Plaza on horses with Guests.
