Centrally located, steps away from Miss O'Keeffe's, St. Tomas Church, the Abiquiu Library, a cantina, post office, clinic, groceries, gas, galleries, coffee shops, restaurant, spirits, sacred sights and ancient ruins.

Authentic architecture. Traditional Pueblo four room house with two bedrooms and full bath. Gorgeous thick, adobe-straw plastered walls. Herringbone latilla and viga ceilings. Flagstone, brick, tile and dirt floors. Sacred, special, private with modern conveniences. Luxurious queen beds. Sumptuous bedding.

Dimmers. Small washer/dryer and refrigerators. Custom draperies. Eco-friendly cleaning supplies. Gorgeous kitchen stove with “old-fashioned” appeal. Furnished and fully supplied kitchen.

Bode's General Store is downhill, one block away. The Abiquiu Inn, offering dining and a gift shop is a half mile away. Mamacita's Pizzaria is 2 miles away at the turn to El Rito. The post office is between the casita and Bode's.

Famed for its light, beauty, land formations, artists and history, Abiquiu offers a wealth of activity. Two day hikes not to be missed in Abiquiu are Sierra Blanca on the Dar al Islam Property and the Poshuouinge Ruins right off the highway. Bandelier National Monument and many Indian Pueblos along the Rio Grande are an hour away or less. The Chama River runs through Abiquiu, allowing rafting, kayaking and camping. The Abiqui Lake is ten minutes from the Casita offering swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, fishing and picnicking.

Across town is The Monastery of Christ in the Desert and Ghost Ranch, both fascinating. The fabled Georgia O’Keeffe Studio Tour which must be reserved well in advance, shows visitors the garden and peeks of her house and studio, across the street from the Casita.

The little town of El Rito with its pastoral beauty, varied artists, forest preserve, Territorial architecture and Northern New Mexico Community College is fifteen minutes away. A truly exceptional restuarant, Walter's Place, offers superb dining on weekends, only during the summer months.

Half an hour from the Casita is Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs with its legendary waters, indoor and outdoor public and private soaking tubs, swimming pool and steamed sauna. Beautiful drives, easy hikes of canyons, cliffs and landscape Miss O’Keeffe painted, are everywhere.

Chaco Canyon is a two hour drive through beautiful, twisting, red earth, butte country, evergreen forests and part of the Navajo Reservation, home of Dineh. Pueblo Bonito and the different sites of Chaco are awe-inspiring and can be visited many times in one’s life, as it is a powerful, sacred spot on this earth.

Beautiful Santa Fe with its golf courses, art galleries, jewelry, museums, fine dining and shopping, music, clubs, live theatre, opera, flea market and ski area is forty-five minutes away.

Likewise, three roads lead to Taos from Abiquiu, noted for the grand pueblo of them all, the northernmost along the Rio Grande, the famous Taos Pueblo. In Taos there are more art galleries, museums, camping, golfing, fishing, local artists and their studios, live music, the Gorge Bridge, river rafting, mountain biking and hiking trails, earthships, world class skiing & boarding at Taos Ski Valley, shopping, fine dining, au natural hot springs & rich cultural heritage.

Why the Owner Chose Abiquiu

I bought this house because it had a special feeling and it was located right across the street from Georgia O'Keeffe's, which I thought was a good location. I thought I would leave it to my sons who are both artists, so they could paint a picture, and put it outside for tourists to see, live in it, or turn it into a gallery. People from all over the world come by every day looking in Georgia's yard, asking if her house truly is the one across the street, as neither hers or this one have signs.

The Unique Benefits at this Authentic Old Adobe Home

You will get to live in the heart of Abiquiu, right on the plaza, across from Miss O'Keeffe's, the church and the library. You can experience the vegetation, the birds and the coolness of the yard by sitting on the outside bancos or the table and chairs. The view of Georgia's yard is beautiful, the space is peaceful and serene.

Owner's Map of Abiquiu

Stepping into this house, I felt a special sacred feeling. Walking into the kitchen took my breath away. The walls were old and thick. The herringbone latillas were on the ceiling. It had an old wood cook stove that smoked, lots of cracks, poor windows, but this incredible peacefulness. The bathroom was in bad shape, the plaster was cracked, the roof leaked the toilet was broken and the tub was made of steel. It had been halfway remodeled poorly. It needed a lot of work, but I could see the potential. I told the owner if he ever wanted to sell it, I would like to have first chance to buy it.

The owner's brother had sold it to him after living in it for awhile. The story goes that his brother won it in a card game in 1983 for $4500 and an old black Cadillac. Many people from Abiquiu have lived in it. Georgia O'Keeffe lived right across the street.

Four years after seeing it for the first time, the owner sold it to me and I began restoring it to its natural beauty. That loving process took seven years. Now it is a very special house for guests to enjoy. I particulary wanted to keep it with an old fashioned feeling. The furnishings are antique, the house is cozy and the dark brown mud straw plastered walls give it it's name, La Casita de Chocolate en Abiquiu.

    • The 3 days we spent at La Casita de Chocolate were wonderful! It was our home away from home. Marcie did a wonderful job at restoring this casita. The time spent at La Casita was definitely magical!

    • Dear Marci, Alhough we've traveled often and widely, I've never been tempted to leave my remarks in a guest book, for no matter how lovely the home and spectacular the setting, the arrangement seemed always too impersonal for the genre of individual commentary. There is something very different, however, here at #6. Even without your genealogy of the evolution from ruin to rustic retreat, one would feel - one DOES feel - the human investment in this gem of a cottage. As I entered, weary from a long drive,I found myself touching every surface as if to restore my strength and soothe my nerves, e.g., the stone-inset bench beside the front door, the adobe walls with embedded straw, the smoothly worn wood of the kitchen table, the rough tickle of the floors on bare feet(& the variety: slate, brick, stone..). I suspect that a professional designer might be able to achieve the authenticity of some of the fittings and furnishings, but the structure as a whole - the environment - is unmistakably the work and the love of a whole person. As I write this, a hummingbird is beating its shimmering wings a thousand times a second as it hovers around the lavender bush in the front yard. It's 7:30 am and the sun is already hot. My family is still sleeping and I have the peace and again, that word, wholeness, of the place all to myself. What more sincere compliment can I offer but to say that I dream, as I sit here, of finding or making a shelter such as this, a shelter that is also an opening for myself and Richard once the last of our children has gone off to university. In other words, in casita chocolate I have found the shape and substance of my desire for the future. Many thanks to you for this gift.

    • Aug 4-6, 2007 Having "La Casita de Chocolate" as our home for these three days has been delightful. The accommodations are perfect: not one thing is lacking or wanted. Marci has thought of everything! The authentic yet unique style Marci has created here is exceptional and lovely. It is obvious she has chosen each and every item with care and the eye of an artist. Thank you Marci (and John!) for being such gracious hosts, showing us more of the place we love and hope to live in the near future. Our experience at the monastery was awesome. It is wonderful knowing we have good friends, someone to share a bottle of wine with or a dinner at Walter's with! Until the next time, Melissa and Mike Smith Glastonbury CT and Lindsey Smith Flagstaff , AZ
