Plasket Ridge House is a spectacular wood, steel and glass prow front home with soaring cathedral ceilings and ocean views. Built around an 85 year old mining cabin, which serves as the present day kitchen, this house has 'soul'. This unique, rustic property is located in a 33 acre parcel in the midst of the Los Padres National Forest. Surrounded by magnificent redwoods, with vast ocean views all around, Plasket Ridge House is perfect for those who enjoy nature, hiking, and quiet contemplation. But there is also easy access to the entire Big Sur Coast, with lots of vacation activity options. The house is two miles up the hill from Scenic Highway 1 and Sand Dollar State Beach, 1 Hour North of Cambria, 1.5 hours from the Paso Robles Wine country and 1.5 hours south of beautiful Carmel. Because the house is on the southern end of Big Sur, the drive from Los Angeles is only 4 1/2 hours. It is also only 25 minutes from Esalen, 45 minutes from the town of Big Sur and one hour south of Andrew Molera State Beach. The house is 5 miles from Gorda where there are shops, gas, groceries, and restaurants.
For those who want to stay at the house and enjoy the quiet, there is a hot tub overlooking the ocean and the redwoods. There are lovely sitting areas on the porch or garden where you can watch the sun rise and kiss the surrounding mountains or pass the evenings watching the sun set into the ocean. Deer may come around to visit in the garden, which has apple and plum trees and an array of local plants. You can wander the property and visit the waterfall next to the house. Up the path are two gold mine shafts that date to 1910, the same period as the original mining cabin. At night, you can watch the play of stars over the house--possibly the best star watching you will ever experience from land.
For those who like to stay indoors and enjoy the solitude, there is a nice kitchen, and pleasant rustic interior design with great photographic art throughout. There are plenty of books and and a TV with DVD player and a good DVD library for guests. We purposely do not have satellite or regular TV on site. Wi Fi with a good signal is available. There are no land phone lines at the house, and only Verizon or T Mobile work directly from the house (this is the reason we cannot accommodate children under 12 - it may be difficult to reach emergency services if something happens).
Detailed driving directions will be provided by email. Use of an SUV or truck is suggested as the as the forest road accessing the property can be rough. 4wd is needed during rainy season.
Guests will be greeted by Gary, the caretaker, who lives on the property in a separate cabin with no visual access to the house. Gary is connected to the main house by intercom so, though private, you won't feel alone.
Plasket Ridge House is powered by solar panels with a propane backup. We strive to operate the house with respect for the environment and the Big Sur Community.

The house totally exceeded our expectations -- it's so beautiful! The photos really don't do it justice. We had such an amazing time - we loved the kitchen, the wood-burning stove, the hot tub, and of course the views. And Gary was extremely nice and helpful. Thanks again - we're already dying to go back! - ElizabethRecommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My husband and I stayed at this beautiful home for 7 wonderful days! We were fortunate to experience some incredible weather -- every day was sunny and cool, a very welcomed change from our hot Arizona summer, and the sunsets from the deck were phenomenal. We never tired of watching the light change through the beautiful garden and the redwoods, watching Mudd and Wolff hunt and play, watching the fog shift and change, and listening to the caretaker's wonderful stories of life in Big Sur. Even darkness here was pretty incredible. Waking up in the middle of night and seeing stars and the outline of the forest was like camping in luxury! If you're looking for an amazing place to stay and experience Big Sur, this is certainly a perfect choice. We have been to Big Sur many times and have experienced a variety of accommodations, from the cabins at Pfeiffer-Burns State Park to The Post Ranch Inn, and this house is by far our favorite. We hope to be fortunate enough to experience it again.Recommended for: Girls getaway, age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks so much for your kind words. We are glad you had a great stay - it always makes me happy when people enjoy this incredible property as much as we do. Come back soon!

I'm writing this as I stare out the huge picture windows overlooking the Pacfic. My wife and I are in day 4 or our 5 day stay at the Plasket Ridge House. We vacation in Big Sur annually and have stayed all along the coast including trips to high end resorts like Ventana. This house is, by far, the most enjoyable and relaxing we have stayed in. The owners are a pleasure to coordinate with and the caretaker is great. He has stories to tell if you're interested but he absolutely respects your privacy while there. He lives just up the road and will go unnoticed unless you are looking for him. Each day we returned to a house that had more firewood stacked, fresh drinking water replenished and a hot tub warmed and cleaned. Gary aka Gare-Bear is awesome. The house itself is about a peaceful as can be. The kitchen has everything you need for gourmet meals and has all the spices and cooking supplies needed - just bring your own groceries and you're good-to-go. The great room has a wonderful wood-burner for cool mornings and nights but the huge windows and doors can open up during the day for a nice breeze (and to let the ocean roar fill the air). The sunshine is plentiful. There are two day beds that offer spectacular views of the coast and you will find yourself attached to them. There is a small section of the great room carved out for watching DVDs if you so chose. Ipod hookups for tunes worked like a charm. The owner installed satellite internet with a remarkably high speed for being so far out in the wilderness. The master bed is very comfortable....in short, the house has all the amenities one could ask for. The gardens, grounds, hot tub and deck are breathtaking. You can easily spend days at the property without ever feeling 'couped' up. The location on the south shore is about 30-45 min south of Big Sur, but there is a small general market and gas station in nearby Gorda. The road up the mountain is rugged - absolutely reccomend a vehicle with good clearance and 4x4. Highly reccomend Big Sur Bakery for lunch/dinner and Treebones has excellent food as well (and only a few minutes south of the house). Try Nepenthe for afternoon tea/drinks/snacks and sit outside. Sierra Mar is a lovely place for lunch (dinner costs an arm and a leg, while lunch will only cost you an arm). We toured one of the Post Ranch ocean rooms and left thinking how we much prefer the Plasket Ridge House. And oh, those Post Ranch rooms will cost you $1,600/night... We will be back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

My family and I stayed in over ten properties in the US while on holiday in Summer 2011 - this was easily the most spectacular of them all, with a magnificent house and simply stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The house itself is even better than the photos suggest, as even the small details are quirky and pleasing. It's a place that makes you smile. The owner was extremely helpful and courteous as I planned the trip from the UK, and we were lucky enough to meet and be able to thank her in person in LA. Gary the caretaker, was not only helpful but also told wonderful stories. Our only regret is that we were not able to stay longer. Still, that means we have a good reason to go back.Recommended for: Girls getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to write a review. When I saw this place online, I knew we had to stay there. Kelley was courteous, and very communicative throughout the entire process. Arriving at dark (we didn't plan to) was an adventure, especially driving over the little ridge into the driveway. The area is pristine...totally undisturbed and beautiful. My wife and I hiked up to the top of the mountain, and the clouds had rolled in over the ocean. We were looking out over an endless sea of clouds, and standing above them. It was something I will never forget. Gary was amazing...he always knew what we'd need without us even asking. Hearst Castle is a must...another life-changing experience for us. I don't think a day has gone by that I haven't thought about Big Sur since we left. This house has to be the best deal in town. Thank you Kelley and thank you Gary and thank you God for creating Big Sur and this home!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Yay! We love it when our guests leave happy and full of wonderful memories. Come back and see us again Brad!

We had the best time on this beautiful property. It's very secluded with a rare privacy you don't find anywhere in California. The house itself is an architectural masterpiece of rustic and modern in a truly inviting and relaxing space. We especial loved the exquisite gardens and paths surrounding the home. Eco-friendly and 5 stars. A perfect combination of a magnificent ocean views nestled in a luxurious redwood forest location. This scenic wonderland spot made for a perfect romantic honeymoon that we will remember our entire lifetime. Thank you Mike and Kelley for your hospitality and for opening up your wonderful home to us.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 6/6

Kelley, we really had such a wonderful time last week at your Plasket Ridge home. We never thought we would be living in the clouds in a house that looked like it was simply part of the landscape, and such an architectural marvel. We hiked, read, cooked, basked on the deck, and just generally enjoyed every minute that we were there. We never tired of looking out to the sea, and loved how the views changed with each hour of the day. Thanks for such an incredible experience! KateDid you find this review helpful? This past September, we had the good fortune to stay in this rustic - yet gorgeous - property. The photos on this website do provide an accurate picture of just how special it is, but it's not easy to tap into the sense of serenity you'll enjoy-- it has to be experienced. We took advantage of the hot tub (nice 'n hot!), quiet time on the deck overlooking the sea, and the miles of trails leading away from the property to higher country above. (As you go up, the views just keep getting better, especially if you are lucky as we were, to hit a grassy plateau at sunset, where we looked down at clouds rolling over the ocean.) Things we like best about the property itself: The house is well-stocked with just about anything you need, including warm blankets, all your kitchen necessities and plenty of good books and DVD's to browse. There are two good-sized bathrooms, and an enormous kitchen well-suited for a family gathering with plenty of counter space and an island to prepare meals. The front window overlooking the sea is graced by two wide resting places for a good read, nap, or extra sleeping space besides what the bedrooms provide. The "living area" is not limited to the indoors - there is plenty of picnic and table space outside as well as in, which is important for larger gatherings requiring a little extra space for dining and visiting. You can see by the photos that the main master bedroom enjoys the best view (and has a terrific bathroom), but the others are also very tastefully decorated and functional. Outside the house we appreciated the natural vegetation and the sense that the owners haven't staged this so everything is perfectly placed, but instead, attention has been given to retaining the natural beauty of the surroundings and an allowance for native plants and flowers to thrive on their own. We found we were very happy we drove a vehicle equipped to get up the rugged road to the property. It's not a difficult drive off the main highway, but certainly better suited for an SUV or truck if at all possible. Once you get to the property itself, you are rewarded with great views and only the sounds of nature. I was struck by the quiet of the night; we realized how rarely we are able to enjoy virtually no sounds at all except wind in the trees. It's quite a treat. This vacation rental met all our expectations - we plan to return!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 7/7

Why the Owner Chose Big Sur:
We bought Plasket Ridge House after looking at many, many houses in Big Sur because this house still has the spirit of the original miners who built the oldest part of the house. It is a soulful, healing place, far away from the 'developed' north of Big Sur. When I come here the place brings a calm over me within an hour that last for days after I return to the madness of the city. It is healing.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Quiet, astonshing, extraordinary location with mountains, redwoods, ocean, a garden and a beautiful interior. Healing and soulful.
