La Casa Belga is set inside an exclusive and secure condominium situated on the Baru Pensinsula, some 30 minutes away by car/taxi or boat from Cartagena centre. The 800m2 property lies within a 1 acre tropical garden and has access to the caribbean sea from the garden's edge. Spacious and breezy, the house is a perfect destination for families or corporate retreats. Relax by the large pool or on the beach, go fishing, sailing or waterskiing and be looked after by the house cook & staff.
The house was built by the present owners in 2001 and was designed in a cool Indonesian style, with high thatched rooves and lattice woodwork. It can accomodate up to 16 people with comfort. It has 6 bedrooms, each one opening up onto wooden deck terraces (perfect for siestas in hamacs). It has a large open sitting room overlooking the pool, a colonial-style dining room, a roof terrace, patio garden, pergola for outside dining, a large garage and staff area. The garden lawns, shaded by coconut trees extend to the boat deck and mooring. It lies on a wide canal on the edge of an inland bay of the caribbean.
All bedrooms have a/c, ceiling fan and closet space. Master Bedroom has king size bed (with additional roll-out bed) and private bathroom. 2 bedrooms with 3 single beds and private bathroom in each. 2 further bedrooms with 3 single beds and a shared bathroom. Bedroom 6 has single bed with additonal roll-out bed and can also be used as library/playroom/tv room.

When I first stumbled on this listing, I thought it was too good to be true. But, it really is this nice. To begin, the owners are extremely prompt in responding to email inquiries. They employ a property manager, Olga, who is also very attentive via email. I traveled with my husband and a group of 14 friends (all well-traveled MBA students) here for spring break. We split time in Cartagena appreciating the history/culture and then 4 wonderful nights at this property, just relaxing. The pictures do not do it justice - it has everything you would want. In addition to the stunning property, there are three wonderful caretakers on site. They cook, clean and organize everything for you. They only speak Spanish but were good sports about our attempts at Spanish The property is quite isolated on the Baru Peninsula. It took us about a 1.5 hour chartered-coach ride to travel from Bocagrande to the house. I think a boat ride would be shorter, but we had lots of luggage, groceries, and alcohol for the 16 of us. So, Olga was able to arrange for a private bus. You need to bring all of your groceries with you - which takes some planning. They already had salt and some seasoning. They were able to buy additional produce and water, but other than that, you need to buy it beforehand. They like to prepare traditional meals - so buy lots of rice, produce (esp coconut), and yellow corn flour. Also, there was constantly fresh squeezed juice, so it's smart to stock up on fruit. I was curious if there was a blender (yes). They also have ice trays (use the bottled water for clean ice). There are not nearby restaurants or bars, so you need to rely on what you have. The outdoor spaces and pool are amazing. Of note, they have both bath and pool towels. To clarify though - this property is on a canal and has a dock, but it is not directly on the beach. Playa Blanca is a 5 minute boat ride away. We rented the boat (more like a water taxi) two of our four days there. I would caution you not to buy a full tank worth of gas (approx $300usd) because if you just want to go to the beach, you won't use much gas. Since we spent all that $$ on gas, we had the driver give us a tour of Rosario Islands (pretty, but no public beach) and water skied. It was so nice to unwind here - they have a great sound system (we brought a 2 in 1 cord to hook up our ipods). It's was freeing to not have internet or TV. There was cell service (and resulting 3G) for those who purchased international plans.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
