Comfortably furnished, our 2-story duplex is ready to welcome visitors to the River Walk expansion just a few blocks away! You can walk to the River Walk 'Park Zone' or 'Museum Reach' areas, the new Children's Museum (one block away), Witte Museum, Zoo -- so very much is nearby.
This 1921 upstairs/downstairs duplex has hardwood oak floors and staircase. The complete house sleeps up to 20 people, but can be divided into a 3/2 and 2/1 (with 'bonus' room) for convenience and discounted pricing. The house was built in 1921 as overflow housing for Ft Sam Houston as the 5th Army 'beefed up' after the First World War. It was built as a duplex and remains that way: The floor plan has been modified over the years to add a second upstairs bathroom, laundry room downstairs, expand over a porch, etc, but the 'bones' of the house are still evident. The 'milk box' where the milkman once made his delivery is still open in the front breezeway (though it no longer has a door or a function!).
Open the hallway door off the inner stairway to join the units for a big family, or rent just the space you need. Either way, you'll enjoy the convenience of a fantastic location. Each space functions alone, but if you rent the whole house you can bring all the relatives for a unique family adventure, reunion, or retreat.
Hardwood floors and lots of natural light are characteristic of the period homes that line the streets of this neighborhood near historic Ft Sam Houston. We've kept the house very much as it was designed, with tile bathrooms and the original layout and glass-fronted upper kitchen cupboards. The house is eclectic and little Bohemian, but clean and accommodating.
Just off the Broadway corridor that unites downtown with upscale Alamo Heights, this street was once home to luminaries such as future President Dwight D. Eisenhower and famous General John J. Pershing. Now, stately homes and big trees invite you to step just a few blocks off the River and relax between your San Antonio adventures. Retired military and a smattering of younger families comprise our neighbors.
Both duplex spaces feature spacious living area with satellite television, large dining rooms, a full kitchen with a complete assortment of cookware and serving wares, and 1920 tile-floored bathrooms large, deep soaking tubs and shower. Upstairs, an extra bathroom is located next to the master bedroom in back. Altogether, there is one king bed, three queen beds, and one double bed – as well as a bunk in the 'bonus' room. Fold out couches create two extra beds in each of the living areas, (total of four) with high-density foam toppers to make for a comfortable nights sleep even in on the sofas. Roll-away cots are also available.
The back yard is sheltered and shaded under two spreading pecan trees. Use it for parking or close the gate and let the kids play safely away from traffic and neighbors while you cook out on the grill or settle into a seat with a drink and a book after a day at the zoo or Sea World. My daughter and I live in the small apartment at rear of property and can help you get the most out of your stay.
This is an older home in a near downtown historic district, not a contemporary suburban home. If you like PBS' 'This Old House' you'll enjoy returning as we continue to enhance and upgrade this home while preserving its features. Convenience and size are the standouts of THIS 'old house'!
We rent to vacationing families for holidays and summer weeks, but much of the year the house is occupied by military families here with Ft Sam Houston (accessed in our neighborhood) who need a temporary home while their soldier trains in the medical field.
VRBO listings system only lets us enter one rate, so the listed rates are only for the full house. To rent separately: downstairs 2/1 is $150; Upstairs is $200/night by itself. Upstairs/downstairs duplex to rent together or singly can provide space for a family reunion in sunny San Antonio.
Year Purchased: 1992
About: I'm a professional writer and editor with a wonderful daughter and a love for dogs. Our tiny dachshund/chihuahua mix, Melon, loves to come meet the visitors with us. We live in the 'mother-in-law' apartment at this address at the back of the property.
I moved back here with my daughter after living ten years in the King William District downtown so that I could shepherd the new stages of improvement on this old house, which was never going to get the TLC it needs to be great in the 21st century unless I'm right here to chip away at it. I'm a single mom, so we have to do things in stages! It also allows me to talk to our visitors and help them find the experience of San Antonio they are looking for. I know where the best farmer's market is, the indie bookstores, the hidden gems for music, etc. I edited San Antonio's weekly newspaper for a few years and wrote about our 'scene' for the Dallas Morning News and other national media after I left the gig. it's not true that I know 'everybody' but in San Antonio I probably enjoy 1 degree of separation!
We also returned to this address because we are living in San Antonio only part of the year now. My daughter Isabel, 13, is an actress and we spend some months of the year in Los Angeles. That means we only needed a 'pied a terre' in San Antonio. By choosing the little apartment here, I was making a commitment to the constant incremental improvements that an older home like this one requires.
I was an art critic for several yeas, but lately I've been making art myself. When we get around to it we'll be hanging more of my own abstract expressionist pieces in the houses.
I've lived in NYC as well as Chicago and traveled extensively throughout the world. It's a joy to me to share this special city with guests.
Why San Antonio: I bought this home as my first investment and home. I love the location! It's convenient to everything! At the time I worked at the Witte Museum, just a few blocks away. I moved some years ago so that my daughter would be in the attendance boundary of the school I chose, which is a dual language school. As a result, she's fully bilingual now (English/Spanish) and has also studied Chinese for three years already. In the past few years she's become a working actress, so we spend part of the year in Los Angeles and part of it in a small apartment at the rear of this property. It's a great location and very peaceful.
The house is a labor of love. It has been massively upgraded since I bought it, but it still has a distance to go. By living here again, in the rear unit, I can assure that this house continues to be a priority.
Artists, writers, world travelers, and creative types who thrive on something unique and different to stimulate the imagination love this offbeat house and its history and 'vibe'. Suburbans who seek the most modern American look and amenities aren't going to groove to it. We're very popular with military families, not only because we're super close to Ft Sam but because Ft Sam trains medical personnel and they are often very worldly. Our military guests continually refer us to others in the military. If you are creative or adventurous, looking for loads of space, friendly people, and convenience at a price less than 3 hotel rooms (for the full house), this is for you. Our neighbors usually get out in the evening and walk their dogs, go for runs, ride a bike, etc: If you take a stroll after the heat dies down you'll meet some good people.
The Unique Benefits at this House: This location is really fabulous. A few blocks to golfing, Kiddie Park, the Lions Field Activity Center, which has concerts, classes, and activities. Playgrounds, the zoo --- you name it, it's right nearby. And just a 5-10 minute drive downtown to the Alamo! Only 5 minutes to the Pearl Brewery Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings, and to the coffee shop, yoga, restaurants, etc at the Pearl! It's just a flat-out great place to be, and so close to the interstate for access to Sea World, Fiesta Texas, Schlitterbahn and so much more. You can even park the car and take a bus all over town from here: the main bus up Broadway is just at the end of the block. A designated 'Culture Bus' connects all the most important destinations.
