St. Remy de Provence house description
This charming typical french semi-detached home is located on a small, quiet lane right in the Village of St Remy. It is a 4 minute walk to the medieval town center and a 2 minute walk to the local tourist office, boules court, small grocery open 7 days a week, local bakery and many restaurants.
The property was completely renovated in 2013 with new wiring, wi-fi , plumbing, plaster, painting, heating and full air conditioning. New bathrooms and kitchen were designed and installed by a well known english designer who now lives locally.
The ground floor comprises the new kitchen, half bath, large dining area for 4 plus additional comfortable seating to read or relax. There is an adjacent sitting room with satellite tv that can be closed off for a quiet space. French doors open onto a secluded walled terrace with dining table and chairs for 4 plus a lounger. The terrace is bordered by plantings including roses, fragrant jasmine and hydrangea. The kitchen has a large fridge/freezer, dishwasher, microwave, hob and oven, coffee machine and toaster plus a wash machine/dryer. The front of the house , opening off the kitchen, has a fenced patio for morning coffee among the flowering planters.
Up the curved stairway are two bedrooms; one with a queen bed and the second with a queen bed that divides into 2 singles if desired. There is a new bathroom with very large shower, toilet and large sink with lots of shelf and drawer space for guests.
The property has an attached garage converted from the original stables. It holds a medium sized car. Large vehicles can be parked a short distance away at the end of the lane.
St Remy de Provence is a magical place that people find they return to year after year. It is at the same time ancient and imbued with modern french chic. It was home to Glanum, founded by the Greeks in the 7th century bc. It later became an important roman settlement. The ruins and museum are fascinating. It was a refuge for Vincent van Gogh who completed many of his famous works depicting the area while in a sanatorium in st remy. Nearby are the towns of arles with its magnificent roman amphitheater and museum, avignon with its spectacular papal palace and gardens from the 14th century, and the nature preserves of the camargue with its flocks of flamingos and herds of the famous white Camargue horses. Modern day St Remy hosts one of the largest outdoor markets in provence on wednesday mornings as well as many events showcasing the Carmargue cowboys known as guardians riding their white houses and herding the local small bulls through the streets the follow the original wall that encircled the town. Wonderful day trips can be taken to pont du gard with its river and amazingly intact roman aqueduct, the famous vineyards of nearby chateau neuf du pape and the antique center of isle sur le Srgue to name just a few of the nearby attractions.

Perfect spot for our stay in St. Remy
Perfect spot for our stay in St. Remy
We were delighted with this wonderfully designed row house in a very quiet, sweet neighborhood minutes from the center. Everything in the house was new, clean and lovely. We particularly appreciated the small efficient kitchen where we enjoyed gathering the makings of dinners to make at home. For two older parents traveling with a young hipster from Brooklyn, this was the perfect spot to explore from and to allow everyone the personal space needed for enjoying our trip. Would recommend this rental without hesitation, C from Massachusetts

Home base in St Remy
Home base in St Remy
We lived in this lovely home in St Remy as our base for our 9 day stay in Provence. I say "lived" because we did just that--settled in and made it our home! We had everything we needed--my husband, daughter, son-in-law, their 4 month old baby and I delighted in being steps from the park where men played petangue (Bocci ball), and the other direction, the grocery and town center. A few blocks down, we were walking where Van Gogh was inspired--and learning about his paintings/settings as we followed the trail to the sanitarium where he stayed. The market on Wednesday was energizing and fun, shopping on the spokes of the street was plentiful, restaurants unique and delicious--Le Marilyn, XA--perfect dining experiences! We traveled to surrounding sights to take in the country side, villages, cities, hiking, castles, archeological antiquities, wineries, the sea--all to come home at the end of the day to our beautiful respite. Breakfast on the back patio, tea on the front "garden," cooking in the new/efficient kitchen, warm towels after hot showers, dark shuttered quiet rooms for wonderful sleep in comfy beds where windows opened to the bluest sky one can imagine! Magical time!!!

A little gem close to the heart of St Remy. Delightfully restored, all new furnishings, well-appointed, spotless. The private rear courtyard is a real bonus. But don't try the garage unless you have a very small car. Plenty of street parking when we stayed (mid-Sept). RECOMMENDED

Smitten with St. Remy de Provence
Smitten with St. Remy de Provence
We discovered this gold nugget of a rental home on VRBO--it was all we expected and more. Perfectly located--not only the house itself (we could walk to town in 5 minutes) but St. Remy as well, in terms of touring other areas of Provence like Arles, St. Baux des Provence, Avignon, Nimes, etc. The property was exactly as pictured and as clean and neat as a whistle. Comfy bed, (we only used the master suite), lovely bathroom (even a lav on the main floor, tiny but handy), well-equipped and if you need anything, there's a U-Express Grocery store about half a block away. The air conditioning was so appreciated as we had several 33 deg. Celsius days. The only drawbacks as far as our experience were: 1) A cautionary note about trying to pull your car into the garage--park on the street instead! My husband scraped and dented our rental car in the process despite my help and the help of a neighbor. It's just as convenient to park on the street. 2) We had trouble with the wi-fi--we were told it was hooked up and it wasn't. When we tried to log on (we had no phone so we were trying to contact the manager as suggested by logging onto the wi-fi while outside the property) to the wi-fi, not sure what happened but after entering their password, our computer ended up crashing and we were told by the repair people that we had a virus. No problems with the computer in England where we'd just been, and in all fairness, not sure what caused the problem but it took us 3 days and 50 Euros to get it fixed, not to mention many walks back and forth to the computer repair spot. 3) The neighbors to the left of us stayed up late (2-3 a.m.) and were rather noisy on a couple of nights. We ended up closing the window in the bedroom and turning the air on despite the lovely cool evening breeze just to block the noise. Despite those snafus, we were delighted with this property. Little patio out back with table and 4 chairs and a chaise. Table and chairs on tiny patio out front. We did use the former but not the latter. Julie, the property manager, couldn't have been more helpful--she even brought us a lovely bottle of wine and a box of superb chocolates made locally to make up for the trouble we had with the wi-fi. I believe subsequent visitors won't have the same problem as Julie is going to emphasize the need for this property to have its own wi-fi hookup. Also, if we had had a working cell phone, some of the difficulty would have been eliminated.

A gem in St Remy, the jewel of Provence
A gem in St Remy, the jewel of Provence
We fell in love with St Remy three years ago when passing through and had been on the lookout for a suitable property to rent in the town. We were delighted when this property came onto the market earlier this year! The house has been fully refurbished; it is light, airy and spacious with excellent air conditioning throughout. The modern décor is complimented by accents of traditional Provencale style. Just being two, we used the second bedroom as a dressing room but the house would be just as comfortable for a family of four. We did not use the garage attached to the property as our car was too large but it would be fine for an average sized car. There is free parking readily available at either end of the lane, approximately 20 yards in either direction! The walled garden is quite narrow but was remarkably sunny most of the day, with a wall of pretty roses and hydrangeas and plenty of room to eat and sunbathe outside. We did a fair bit of cooking at home – the fresh local produce is hard to ignore and the kitchen was ideal for this – very well kitted out, everything brand new with a good sized fridge and freezer. The property is about a 2 minute walk from a well- stocked small supermarket/convenience store and an excellent family-run butcher but the highlight of food shopping in St Remy has to be the Wednesday market where the choice of fabulous looking (and tasting) produce has to been seen to be believed. When not cooking at home, we explored a handful of the numerous restaurants in the town with no need to worry about the car as the house is so close to everything. There are also many fabulous restaurants within a few miles of St Remy. Apart from eating and drinking, we spent time visiting some of the many local vineyards to taste and buy their delicious wine. Our favourite tourist attraction was the Cathedrale de l’Image (or Carrieres de Lumieres) at Les Baux de Provence, less than a ten minute drive away. The property is managed by a native English-speaking agent who could not have been more helpful, even to the point of helping us load our car at the end of our stay. At one point we had a problem with our internet connection and she was able to get someone out to sort the problem on the Saturday of the Fete Nationale weekend! We look forward to visiting the property again very soon. Even after 8 days there, we feel St Remy has much more to offer us and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this property to family and friends.
