Property description

We call our small house Serenity Casita. Done up in shades of green, taupe and navy, the interior of the house mimics the calm hues of the desert, the Rincon mountains, and the sky that surround us. A generous 730 square feet (68 square meters), the house has one large bedroom; a full bathroom with shower and a small clothes washer and dryer; full-size kitchen with stove and refrigerator; living and dining rooms; and deck with a view of the mountains.

The living room has a full-size futon that will sleep two extras in a pinch and a flat-screen TV with satellite connection. The bedroom has a king-size bed, bed-side lamps, dresser, luggage holders, and chair. The deck provides a lovely view of the lush green desert and the nearby mountains, while the small table and chairs on the deck are an ideal spot for dining, reading, napping, or dreaming.

A fantastic feature of the casita is that it is chock full of original oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings on loan by noted Southwest Plein Air artist, Kath Macaulay.

Our historic neighborhood is known as the Notch Neighborhood because it is a 1-square-mile area notched out of the northwest corner of Saguaro National Park East. Parcels in the neighborhood are generally 5 acres (many are double lots) and the roads are still unpaved. Horses abound.

While our area is rural, I cannot say we are exactly secluded. Fortunately we have a beautiful rustic privacy fence that shields us from neighbors to the south. The Sonoran Desert can only be described as lush and the vegetation adds to our privacy. Except for the occasional yapping of coyotes, it is very quiet here.

Outdoor activities in our part of northeast Tucson include nearby trail heads for riding and hiking in the Rincon mountains, as close as 1 mile. The drive-in entrance to Saguaro National Park is less than 4 miles away. Horseback riding and fine dining are less than 5 miles away at the renowned and historic Tanque Verde Guest Ranch. The gateway to the Santa Catalina mountains, Tucson's sentinel range with elevations from 2,724 to 9,157 feet (830 to 2,721 meters) above sea level, is 6 miles from Serenity Casita. Ski Valley on Mount Lemmon, the highest point in the Catalina range, offers winter skiing for those of you missing the snow.

The petting zoo at the main house, which is a shout away, consists of Micky and Molly, two female Welsh Corgi teenagers, Pembroke and Cardigan, respectively. They are well socialized and love people!

We accept personal checks and PayPal, as well as credit cards through VRBO. Please contact us if you have questions. If we are booked on the dates that interest you, please inquire anyway. We may be able to refer you to a nearby guest rental.

We do all we can to make your visit to Tucson fun, comfortable, and memorable. Need we say more?

Serenity Casita is a legally permitted rental in Pima County.

Car: Necessary

We are located on the far east side of Tucson, within the historic Notch Neighborhood, which backs up to Saguaro National Park East. Trail heads for horseback riding and hiking abound, and wildlife is everywhere: birds of every stripe including the famous (or infamous) road runner, coyotes (often traveling in packs), bobcats, racoons, deer, badgers, javalina, cotton tails, jack rabbits, Gila monsters, rattlers and other snakes, ground squirrels, and ...

Horseback riding at Tanque Verde Ranch, golf, tennis, and swimming are nearby. Colossal Cave and Kartchner Caverns are must-see underground caves. The tours at the latter site are so popular, reservations are required by the state (it's a state park). The historic towns of Bisbee and Tombstone are wonderful day trips. Pima Air and Space Museum and a Tital Missal Silo have tours, and the world-class Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a must-see!

Other nearby attractions include the Tucson Botanical Gradens and Tohono Chul (outdoor botanical) Park. Farther afield but a nice day trip are Kitt Peak National Observatory and Morenci, the second largest open pit mine in the U.S.

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2010

About the owner: We are retired geologists who first came to Tucson years ago for one of us to continue graduate studies. We remain endlessly fascinated by the mountains that surround the Tucson basin, which you can actually see! and the enduring beauty of the desert.

Why the Owner Chose Saguaro National Park East:
We live in northeast Tucson because this part of the basin is hemmed in at the corner where the Catalina mountains meet the Rincon mountains, and little additional building occurs here compared with the rest of the basin. Our historic Notch Neighborhood is pretty rural, with large lots, unpaved roads, lots of horses and horse properties, and plenty of wild life. With wildlife cameras around the property we have captured coyote, javelina, deer, badger, bobcat, raccoons, and fox.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love our in-your-face view of the Rincon mountains, spotting the occasional javelina or coyote running down the road and charging off into the bushes, the incredibly diverse bird population, the clouds and sunlight displays, the multitude and diversity of wild flowers, the... ah well, you understand. It's the desert. It's Tucson.
