Wine with a side of history

Perhaps the area’s most beloved attraction is Colossal Cave—it’s always a cool 70 degrees inside, and families can enjoy guided tours and even enjoy dinner. Love history? Escape your Vail vacation rental and soak up a hint of history in Rancho del Lago. It’s home to a stone retaining wall, a bridge, and a small set of stairs, the only remaining remnants of the community developed in the 1890s.
Take to the open road…or a dark cave
After you’ve booked that Vail vacation rental, step outside and get ready to explore. Take advantage of the serenity, which lends itself well to excursions on foot. A generous section of the Arizona Trail runs through Vail, and it’s the perfect spot to hike, ride a bike, or go birdwatching with the family. The Colossal Cave area offers prime space for picnicking and camping, and there are incomparable views from some of the area’s most impressive trails, including Gunsight Pass.
A rancher’s town with an adventurer’s spirit
Named for ranchers Edward and Walter Vail, the area was made up primarily of ranches in the 19th century. Located about half an hour south from Tucson, it’s noteworthy for some impressive natural attractions, among them the Rincon Mountains in Saguaro National Park, and the aptly named Colossal Cave, which includes miles of passageways. Ciénega Creek crosses Interstate 10, which is near the town. Near here, Davidson Canyon is also accessible—a permit is required, but it’s an excellent spot to view a pretty sunrise and dramatic sunset.
