Escape to the heart of a lake
Frye Island is an idyllic island which enjoys a scenic spot at the heart of Maine's deepest and second-biggest body of water, Sebago Lake. Reached by seasonal ferry from late spring until late fall, Frye Island is largely a seasonal vacation town, although there is a small private marina which is accessible to boat owners year-round. Choose a Frye Island vacation rental for a glorious summertime escape of soft, sandy beaches, lake swimming, summer fun, and peaceful seclusion.
Having a ball on Frye Island
Frye Island is popular with boaters on Sebago Lake, and some slips in the marina are available to visitors and renters staying on the island. Even if you don't have a boat, you can still enjoy the lake here. At the south end of the island, the soft, pale golden sands of Long Beach are perfect for families. Take a picnic, relax in the sun, take a swim in the lake, or maybe try your hand at waterskiing. Frye Island also has its own tennis courts, and a challenging golf course, pro shop, and snack bar, nestled in the beautiful, green woodland.
Arriving at Frye Island
It might be just 25 miles from Portland's fishing shores, converted warehouses, glossy restaurants, and upscale shops, but Frye Island seems a world away. As you turn off onto Raymond Cape Road for the drive to the ferry landing, the rest of the world melts away and Frye Island's laid-back vibe begins to take hold. After a brief boat ride, you'll arrive at the visitor's boat dock and be able to chill out in the cafe and meet fellow visitors in the general store. There are few communal spaces on the island, so no doubt you'll enjoy a lunch or Sunday brunch on the patio here sometime during your stay.
Frye Island: Sebago Lake's green jewel
You'll discover many small coves and sandy beaches dotted around the island's shore. The beaches on the west side of Frye Island offer beautiful views across the lake to the White Mountains and Mount Washington. The small lighthouse is a stunning spot to watch the sun go down as the pinks and golds of the sunset shimmer across the lake. If you do have a boat at your disposal, the Sebago Lake State Park at the very north of the lake has more beautiful sandy beaches, plus hiking, and biking trails, and beautiful woodland in the foothills of the White Mountains.
