Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 2

Dolphin Lookout(TM) is like a 'ship on land,' anchored and secluded on the southeast tip of this tropical out island coral atoll. This wonderful hand-crafted cottage, is perched on a bluff, providing spectacular panoramic views of the gorgeous Bahamian turquoise ocean and breath taking vistas across Scotland Bay to the beautiful little private coral island of Scotland Cay.

Guana's beaches are 'Fodor's choice' for the best beaches in the Bahamas. Just a few minutes from Dolphin Lookout, begin miles of white powdery sand beaches, where you may only see your foot prints in the sand. A magnificent outer reef, which is the 3rd largest in the world, runs the entire length of Guana Cay. Within a 'stones throw' from this very special oceanfront cottage are numerous inner reefs and coral gardens teaming with colorful marine life. Extraordinary white sand beaches, reefs, coral gardens, snorkeling, swimming, diving, kayaking are accessible by foot or golf cart and are only a few minutes from Dolphin Lookout.

About 2 miles west of Dolphin Lookout(TM) is a quaint, picturesque settlement, home to 150 or so permanent residences, descendants of loyalists, who migrated to the Bahamas from the Carolinas, Virginia and New York during the revolutionary war.

Here in the settlement, you will find Guana Harbour grocery store, several great restaurants, Donna's golf cart rentals, the upscale Orchid Bay Yacht club and Marina, a dive shop, and boat rentals. Yes, this out island experience may be the closest thing to 'heaven on earth' for ocean lovers. To us it continues to be a fairy tale experience. Dolphin Lookout may well be that vacation or retirement home away from home you have been dreaming about. Sound and look to good to be true? Please note the comments by Dolphin Lookout guests, our photos, and then you decide.

Paradise Found

This was our second time staying at Dolphin Lookout and it was every bit as lovely as the first.

Our first visit included a large family group scattered in different homes on the island for my husband's 50th in July 2015. This was a very different visit and so nice, just the two of us. We spent lots of time reading on the front deck surrounded by the most gorgeous views I've encountered. It's so private and detached from everything while only a fun cart ride into the settlement and Nippers :)!

Caysera Beach is not only a beautiful, private beach but the snorkeling is awesome with a reef right off the beach. Being able to snorkel in December without a wet suit was a nice surprise!

Lots of walks on the little poured cement stepping stones to watch the waves crash against the rocks. It was mesmerizing. The small clearing at the edge of the southeast part of the property, where the adirondack chairs sit, is a perfect spot to check out the stars on a clear evening.

There are a couple of little trails besides the one leading to the dock that offer different views of the water and are worth checking out.

We joined the golf cart parade and had a ball with other locals, all dressed in their ugly sweaters and decked out carts. It ended, after several stops, at Nipper's for live music and incredible fireworks on the beach. I would highly suggest going over the Holidays but not next Christmas and New Years' Eve as we just booked it, sorry!!

I was happy to see the large barracuda still lives under the dock. We did not kayak this time, but if the winds are coming out of the right direction, kayaking is a must-do. They have all the equipment you need for a day on the beach or on the kayaks.

Dolphin Lookout is immaculately kept and they have basically everything you need there. The people on this island are lovely. We made several new friends :).

We counted in our heads about 18 islands we've visited over the years from the South pacific, and through all of the Caribbean; this is our favorite spot!

Perfect for us!

  • 5 of 5

There’s not much we can add to what’ been said about the insanely beautiful view from Dolphin Lookout except maybe to say that the water is even closer than expected. It’s clear that Ben’s put tremendous thought into both the design of the cottage and the property; both inside the cottage and out, there’s a lot to explore. The kitchen had everything we needed for meal preparation. The bathroom was stocked with lots of toiletries and an ample first aid kit which was nice as our checked bag, with all our liquids, arrived two days after we did. The library included several guide books on fish, shells, birds, etc.

Outside, Ben’s carved paths to particularly scenic spots. About 25 ft to the left of path that leads to the Adirondack chairs, is a path that leads over coral to the surf’s edge, with a spot for a beach chair. The view from there of the Atlantic is spectacular. Count all the shades of blues and greens you see or simply listen to the surf.

We enjoyed snorkeling from the dock, with the best location being toward the stone jetty of the adjacent property to the right. We did see Bob the barracuda once at sunset.

We loved Cay Sera beach, and, thanks to Ben, also discovered North Beach, about a 10 minute ride north of the Settlement. Same beautiful water but with gentle waves, suitable for jumping and/or riding. We spent time each day at each beach.

We emailed Troy of Dive Guana in advance of our arrival to schedule the “north trip” which includes a snorkel off Baker’s Bay, a visit to No Name Cay to see the swimming pigs and a not to be missed visit to Manjack Cay to swim with nurse and lemon sharks, sting rays and sea turtles! We also tried for the “south” trip to Fowl Cay Reserve, Elbow Cay and Man-O-War, but the wind did not cooperate. Next time!

Susan Knowles was wonderful to us, despite our flight issues. She managed to get us from the airport to the ferry in just over an hour with a quick stop at the liquor store and a lightning fast, but complete, shopping excursion to Maxwell’s in between. She’s a peach! Gina, too was great, meeting us at the ferry with our golf cart and answering questions for us throughout our stay.

Between Ben’s guide and a website I found called abacoforum.com, we had a great idea as to what to expect, enabling us to get the most out of our time on Guana. And, despite the frustrations of our getting there, we’ve fallen in love with the Cay and have already made plans to return.

The entire process was simple and easy, from our initial booking request to our arrival at the Guana Cay dock.

Gina greeted us at the dock with our golf cart (reserved at Donna’s Golf Carts), took us to the grocery and liquor store to stock up on supplies, gave us a brief tour of the area, then off to Dolphin Lookout. As described in previous reviews, the house is very well constructed and meticulously maintained. The views and coastal breezes were tremendous. Access to snorkeling, kayaking and just plain relaxing is all within a few steps of the house. Beautiful beaches are within a few minutes of Dolphin Lookout – might have seen 2- 4 people on the beach during our entire stay, great feeling having a stunning beach all to yourself.

We enjoyed the bars and restaurants, spent quite a bit of time at Nippers, Kidd’s and Grabbers – we really enjoyed wing night (Thursday evening) at Orchid Bay – tasty wings.

It was fun getting to know the locals and fellow island visitors – everyone was very nice.

Can’t wait to come back!

Peace on Earth

  • 5 of 5

We were there for a week at the end of March and it was fantastic. I would strongly recommend you call Susan Knowles (her number is in the guide provided to you) to pick you up at the airport and take you to the grocery store and on to the ferry. She was wonderful.

The house, as everyone says, was set in the most unbelievably beautiful place. If I had any concerns ahead of time it was that the deck might be too small or that the trees might block the view unless you were standing up, but neither proved to be true. You can lie in bed and see the water out the front doors and out the windows beside you. Views everywhere. Those on the beachfront don't have 1/2 the view this house has.

We did not hear anything other than the waves crashing on the rocks all week long except the birds chirping. Nothing. Privacy galore!

We did see Bob, the barracuda, two times under the dock.

We were surprised that the water was cooler than we expected and it was quite windy for the first few days which made the ocean/beachside very rough and swimming would have been challenging. But, no matter what, that Caysera beach is as pretty as any beach can be. Just as promised, we were alone on the beach almost every time we went and, when there was someone there, they were leaving as we arrived.

The bed is super comfortable but small. My only recommendation would be that they purchase some additional glassware. We drank our cocktails from coffee cups and our wine from margarita glasses.... but hey... who cares when you are in paradise!

Owner's Response: Lisa, We are pleased you folks enjoyed your stay at Dolphin Lookout. Thank you for your very nice comments and input regarding the wine/cocktail glasses. Per our recent conversation, we typically keep a set of (4) "glass" wine/cocktail glasses, and a back up set up plastic wine/ cocktail glasses. As a point for clarification, Dolphin Lookout has a queen size bed. We hope you will return to Dolphin Lookout someday. Best regards, Ben and Cathy

Outstanding Position on Guana Cay

  • 5 of 5

We had a very relaxing stay at Dolphin Lookout. The property is exactly as described in the many reviews we read before booking - it has an outstanding location at the Southern tip of Guana Cay, looking over to Scotland Cay, with fabulous views from the deck. The property itself is small, more like a studio apartment, but as spacious as a nice hotel suite. And there is plenty of space on the deck to just sit/lie down and chill. We tended to eat out at lunch time and relax at Dolphin Lookout in the evenings, and take a night cap sitting under a palm tree and marvel at the night sky (tip: use starwalker app or similar on ipad to see what all those constellations are). Our strategy of staying home paid off on new year's eve, when the beach on Scotland Cay hosted an elaborate 20-minute firework display at 9pm. They must be a family friendly lot on that private island to have the fireworks so early, and we were certainly grateful for what felt like a show put on just for us at Dolphin Lookout! We enjoyed leaving the blinds open and waking up to glorious dawn skies. Our pilates teacher would have been proud of us as every day we strolled down to the boat dock and did our "boat dock" pilates session - always on the look out for Bob the Barracuda, who often turned up as we arrived. The restaurants are not outstanding, nor should they be when you consider the constraints of island life, but we were not disappointed. We particularly enjoyed eating at Orchid Bay. I would say they had the best and friendliest service and the verandah is lovely to sit on and watch all the boating activity as you dine. The wifi worked very well, and we put it to good use, not for browsing, but for listening to Spotify using the aux cable connected to the mini hi-fi system. We also had a few movie nights on Netflix and again used the aux cable, to deliver a nice surround-sound experience. It's certainly a good idea to buy groceries at Marsh Harbor as the local store is very limited but does have all the basics. But the best place to buy dinner is straight from the dock near the liquor store. We didn't have enough cash one day and the the local ATM was closed for business (i.e. Grabbers) - but we were able to buy some nice large cray fish tails for $6 and three bottles of local beer! Our favourite activity was just to relax and enjoy the stunning Cay Sera beach where we hardly saw another soul. A fabulous escape.
