Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 2

Dolphin Lookout(TM) is like a 'ship on land,' anchored and secluded on the southeast tip of this tropical out island coral atoll. Dolphin Lookout could well be one of the most spectacular tropical settings to be found anywhere in the world. This wonderful custom, hand-crafted cottage, both oceanfront as well as bay front, is perched on a bluff, providing incredible panoramic views of the gorgeous Bahamian turquoise ocean and breath taking vistas across Scotland Bay to the beautiful little private coral island of Scotland Cay.

Guana's beaches are 'Fodor's choice' for the best beaches in the Bahamas. Just a few minutes from Dolphin Lookout, begin miles of white powdery sand beaches, where you may only see your foot prints in the sand. A magnificent outer reef, which is the 3rd largest in the world, runs the entire length of Guana Cay. Within a 'stones throw' from this very special oceanfront cottage are numerous inner reefs and coral gardens teaming with colorful marine life. Extraordinary white sand beaches, reefs, coral gardens, snorkeling, swimming, diving, kayaking are accessible by foot or golf cart and are only a few minutes from Dolphin Lookout.

About 2 miles west of Dolphin Lookout(TM) is a quaint, picturesque settlement, home to 150 or so permanent residences, descendants of loyalists, who migrated to the Bahamas from the Carolinas, Virginia and New York during the revolutionary war.

Here in the settlement, you will find Guana Harbour grocery store, several great restaurants, Donna's golf cart rentals, the upscale Orchid Bay Yacht club and Marina, a dive shop, and boat rentals. Yes, this out island experience may be the closest thing to 'heaven on earth' for ocean lovers. To us it continues to be a fairy tale experience. Dolphin Lookout could be that "gem" of a vacation or retirement home away from home you have been dreaming about. Sound and look to good to be true? Please note the comments by Dolphin Lookout guests, our photos, and then you decide.

About Ben and Cathy Hickman

We grew up along the southern California coast. Although it is a wonderful place to live, it is not the "tropical" paradise we dreamed about for building a vacation and retirement cottage. Our dream focused on, first and foremost, finding a unique OCEANFRONT PROPERTY, spectacular white sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise water common to coral atolls, warm tropical weather, a tropical setting, boating, snorkeling, diving, AND THE NEED FOR SECLUSION.

Ben and Cathy Hickman purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Ben and Cathy Hickman chose Great Guana Cay

Our search for our DREAM TROPICAL PARADISE took us to islands and places throughout the globe. When we discovered, what is now the "birth" place for Dolphin Lookout, we knew we had struck the "mother lode."This undiscovered gem in the "rough" had met and surpassed all of our requirements. However, the story of Dolphin Lookout was not all "blue skies and clear sailing." There were many challenges as there was no power, no roads, no defined pathways from the settlement to the property, and Guana Cay was a "sleepy," and for the most part, an undeveloped island. The only access to the Dolphin Lookout property was by boat on the bay side or 2 miles by foot along the oceanfront. If you are interested in learning more about the origin of Dolphin Lookout, please continue below under the caption, UNIQUE BENEFITS.

What makes this cottage unique

By now you may get the feeling that YOU have discovered a rare jewel. As previously described, Dolphin Lookout is located at the very tip of a wonderful coral atoll, not only oceanfront and bay front, but has access to a terrific dock and pristine, private cove on the bay side. For the "rest of the story" behind this HISTORIC cottage and property, read on: In 1994-1997 we purchased the oceanfront properties which were to become the birth place of Dolphin Lookout-these properties included a right of way which extends from the bay side(Sea of Abaco) to the oceanfront; from 1997 to 2002, improvements included a serene 800 pathway from the bay side to the oceanfront, wonderful dock built on the bay side, unpaved golf cart roadway extending through the sparsely populated south end residential community making the settlement accessible by golf cart, and finally, after 2 years in the waiting, Bahamas Power and Light installed our transformer and underground power line. From 2003 to 2006, Dolphin Lookout cottage was built by highly skilled local craftsmen. The cottage was framed up in a matter of a few months, but it was the finish work that took so long. The wonderful finish work was custom and completed on the site. All of the accessories were imported. In designing Dolphin Lookout, we wanted it to feel like a "ship on land," and that became our theme throughout the building of the cottage. In keeping with our theme, solid brass hardware is used installed throughout including replicas of old brass ship's lanterns. The above story is but an outline of why this special small cottage means so much to us, and why so many of our wonderful clients feel as we do. Is the story behind Dolphin Lookout finished? By no means.................the "rest of the story" is on going and yet to be written.

Paradise Found

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at Dolphin Lookout and it was every bit as lovely as the first.

Our first visit included a large family group scattered in different homes on the island for my husband's 50th in July 2015. This was a very different visit and so nice, just the two of us. We spent lots of time reading on the front deck surrounded by the most gorgeous views I've encountered. It's so private and detached from everything while only a fun cart ride into the settlement and Nippers :)!

Caysera Beach is not only a beautiful, private beach but the snorkeling is awesome with a reef right off the beach. Being able to snorkel in December without a wet suit was a nice surprise!

Lots of walks on the little poured cement stepping stones to watch the waves crash against the rocks. It was mesmerizing. The small clearing at the edge of the southeast part of the property, where the adirondack chairs sit, is a perfect spot to check out the stars on a clear evening.

There are a couple of little trails besides the one leading to the dock that offer different views of the water and are worth checking out.

We joined the golf cart parade and had a ball with other locals, all dressed in their ugly sweaters and decked out carts. It ended, after several stops, at Nipper's for live music and incredible fireworks on the beach. I would highly suggest going over the Holidays but not next Christmas and New Years' Eve as we just booked it, sorry!!

I was happy to see the large barracuda still lives under the dock. We did not kayak this time, but if the winds are coming out of the right direction, kayaking is a must-do. They have all the equipment you need for a day on the beach or on the kayaks.

Dolphin Lookout is immaculately kept and they have basically everything you need there. The people on this island are lovely. We made several new friends :).

We counted in our heads about 18 islands we've visited over the years from the South pacific, and through all of the Caribbean; this is our favorite spot!

Dream come true!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I found this house on VRBO about 5 years ago and it has been our dream so when my husband retired we decided it was time to make it a reality. It was even better than we had anticipated. The views are amazing and the home is immaculate. It had everything we needed and Gina even brought us a fishing pole.We loved the privacy and the drive in the golf cart.was one of our favorite parts. The snorkeling was great. It truly was a great stay and we will definitely stay again.

Fantastic as always

  • 5 of 5

We've been several times and the view off the porch never ceases to amaze us. As usual, Ben's house was clean, comfortable and stocked with necessities. The wifi worked perfectly and the power stayed on the whole week so we didn't have to use the generator. We had some great snorkeling in Scotland Bay and at Caysera (see Ben's guidebook for snorkeling excursions). The snorkeling off the dock wasn't as good as it had been on prior visits but we may have just hit a couple of off days. We loved the new restaurant Mermaids and highly recommend it for dinner (they don't open until 4:30 and I think they're closed on Monday and Tuesday). Cheesy name but good food and excellent view off the deck. We rented a boat from Troy at Dive Guana and didn't really care for it - very slow and burned through fuel like crazy so it was expensive. We've had better boats from Water Ways and Conch Pearl and they will pick you up in Marsh Harbour to go get the boat so you don't have to bother with the ferry schedule. Note to Central Floridians re flights: We used to use Air Gate out of New Smyrna and they're awesome, but now that we've flown several times with Air Unlimited we feel comfortable recommending them as well, particularly since they are just using the King Airs for Abaco charters now. We've had very good experiences with them. Happy Traveling! And thank you to Ben and Cathy for providing such a wonderful home!! :)

This is a very wonderful and special place - - - But

  • 4 of 5

Our recent stay at the Dolphin Lookout was the third time we have been there. It is truly a magical place for those who are looking for complete privacy and amazing views. It accommodates only a couple but I can't imagine a more romantic and peaceful place. The "but" I refer has nothing to do with the place itself but rather the power source for the whole area of islands. The power was on only intermittently for the whole time we were there. For us this wasn't a big issue because there is a generator that supplies power for most of the house. It does not, however, run the electric range for cooking. That didn't bother us very much since there is a propane barbecue there and great places to eat down in the village. The area does have to get their power issues fixed though.

Owner's Response: Good afternoon Brent and Donna, Thank you for your very nice, as well as helpful comments. We want to apologize for the inconvenience. The Bahamas Electricity Corp. ordered a part from the states which caused the delay in repairs to their system. The BEC power grid was fully restored a day or so following your departure and is now back to "normal" operation. As you folks are aware from you prior stays, and our experience over the last 11 years, we do have periodic power outages but they are normally very short lived. We hope to see you back at Dolphin Lookout in the future. Thanks for being such great clients. Ben and Cathy
