Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 2

Dolphin Lookout(TM) is like a 'ship on land,' anchored and secluded on the southeast tip of this tropical out island coral atoll. This wonderful hand-crafted cottage, is perched on a bluff, providing spectacular panoramic views of the gorgeous Bahamian turquoise ocean and breath taking vistas across Scotland Bay to the beautiful little private coral island of Scotland Cay.

Guana's beaches are 'Fodor's choice' for the best beaches in the Bahamas. Just a few minutes from Dolphin Lookout, begin miles of white powdery sand beaches, where you may only see your foot prints in the sand. A magnificent outer reef, which is the 3rd largest in the world, runs the entire length of Guana Cay. Within a 'stones throw' from this very special oceanfront cottage are numerous inner reefs and coral gardens teaming with colorful marine life. Extraordinary white sand beaches, reefs, coral gardens, snorkeling, swimming, diving, kayaking are accessible by foot or golf cart and are only a few minutes from Dolphin Lookout.

About 2 miles west of Dolphin Lookout(TM) is a quaint, picturesque settlement, home to 150 or so permanent residences, descendants of loyalists, who migrated to the Bahamas from the Carolinas, Virginia and New York during the revolutionary war.

Here in the settlement, you will find Guana Harbour grocery store, several great restaurants, Donna's golf cart rentals, the upscale Orchid Bay Yacht club and Marina, a dive shop, and boat rentals. Yes, this out island experience may be the closest thing to 'heaven on earth' for ocean lovers. To us it continues to be a fairy tale experience. Dolphin Lookout may well be that vacation or retirement home away from home you have been dreaming about. Sound and look to good to be true? Please note the comments by Dolphin Lookout guests, our photos, and then you decide.

Paradise Found

This was our second time staying at Dolphin Lookout and it was every bit as lovely as the first.

Our first visit included a large family group scattered in different homes on the island for my husband's 50th in July 2015. This was a very different visit and so nice, just the two of us. We spent lots of time reading on the front deck surrounded by the most gorgeous views I've encountered. It's so private and detached from everything while only a fun cart ride into the settlement and Nippers :)!

Caysera Beach is not only a beautiful, private beach but the snorkeling is awesome with a reef right off the beach. Being able to snorkel in December without a wet suit was a nice surprise!

Lots of walks on the little poured cement stepping stones to watch the waves crash against the rocks. It was mesmerizing. The small clearing at the edge of the southeast part of the property, where the adirondack chairs sit, is a perfect spot to check out the stars on a clear evening.

There are a couple of little trails besides the one leading to the dock that offer different views of the water and are worth checking out.

We joined the golf cart parade and had a ball with other locals, all dressed in their ugly sweaters and decked out carts. It ended, after several stops, at Nipper's for live music and incredible fireworks on the beach. I would highly suggest going over the Holidays but not next Christmas and New Years' Eve as we just booked it, sorry!!

I was happy to see the large barracuda still lives under the dock. We did not kayak this time, but if the winds are coming out of the right direction, kayaking is a must-do. They have all the equipment you need for a day on the beach or on the kayaks.

Dolphin Lookout is immaculately kept and they have basically everything you need there. The people on this island are lovely. We made several new friends :).

We counted in our heads about 18 islands we've visited over the years from the South pacific, and through all of the Caribbean; this is our favorite spot!

We absolutely loved our stay at Dolphin Lookout - highly recommend.

  • 5 of 5

The whole experience from beginning to end was incredible and exceeded our expectations. From the information the owner provided to help us make the most of our island experience to the great care and communication from the caretakers that live on the island to the beautiful house and property not to mention the community and island itself, was absolutely fantastic.

We enjoyed our daily beach excursions and golf cart rides into town. The sunrise, sunset and moonrise views from this house are spectacular. We were able to catch dinner fishing right from the coast at the house and down on the pier in the bay. Excellent snapper! The house was furnished and stocked just as promised and very relaxing and comfortable and met all our daily needs.

We snorkeled right from the pier and the water was incredible as well as the colorful fish and coral etc..

Very easy to get to from Houston to Ft Lauderdale to Marsh Harbor and then the ferry to Greay Guana. We took the advice and shopped our groceries on Marsh Harbour but also found we could get any forgotten items at the small grocery store on the island.

Highly recommend and would definitely consider repeat visits!

Another wonderful week at Dolphin Lookout!!!🌴🌴🌴

  • 5 of 5

Ben & Cathy, our visit to Dolphin Lookout (7/1/17 - 7/8/17) was spectacular!!! We didn't think it could be any better than our first visit in 2014, but it was!!! The scenery at your home is so beautiful and relaxing!!! We loved visiting the beautiful beaches, especially Caysera (great snorkeling), having lunch at one of the quaint restaurants on the island (the fresh, made to order, conch salad at Grabbers during the weekends is not to be missed!!!) and coming back to read and relax on the porch. The breeze on the porch was always perfect!!! We enjoyed dinner and wine at the house most evenings and watching the full moon rise over the water!!! We also enjoyed the fireworks on Scotland Cay from the porch on the 4th!!! Dolphin Lookout is so well appointed!!! Perfect for us!!!

We took a private charter with Troy @ Dive Guana to No Name Cay to swim with the pigs, swim with the stingrays & sharks, snorkeling and lunch on Green Turtle Cay So much fun!!! We would highly recommend this charter for your future guests.

Ben & Cathy, we so appreciate you sharing your beautiful slice of paradise & we look forward to making many new memories at Dolphin Lookout in the future!!!

Great accomodation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week last July. Great vieuws, great house. The house was very clean and was very well stocked with all kinds of supplies. We didn't use the cayaks because we had rented a boat. Loved the Bay of Scotland, the beach at Baker's Bay, Man O War and Elbow Cay. The beach at Nippers is pretty good but not one of the best we've seen. I must say we've seen a lot of top notch beaches all around the world so we're probably just being picky. Note that you cannot walk to a beach right from the house. You have to take the golfcart to Caysera Beach which has great water and isn't far at all. We ate mostly at Nippers and Grabbers. We liked the food at both places. We ate at Kid's Cove once but the food was expensive and absolutely terrible. We thought it was strange how expensive the restaurants were compared to Green Turtle Cay. We ate at the house once. The kitchen has everyting you need. We loved sitting on the deck in the morning and late in the afternoon after being gone with the boat all day.

There is only one thing that we thought could be improved. The bed is kind of small (queen size) and the matrass has had it's best days. However, we still slept fine and absolutely loved our stay at the Dolphin Lookout. We also thought it was great that the owners provided us with so much usefull information ahead of time. They really do a great job!

Ps. The guards at the gate try to feed a couple of sweet stray cats but they don't earn much money and often have no money to buy catfood. We gave the guys a huge bag of dry catfood and a lot of canned food as well. They were so thankfull we provided them with the catfood! So, if you love cats then you might like to help out the guards at the gate a bit.

Owner's Response: Cynthia, We appreciate your very nice comments, and are pleased you enjoyed your stay at Dolphin Lookout. With regards to the bed mattress, thank you for your input. It is an expensive mattress, was inspected the first of the year, and we have not received any complaints as to its condition or comfort level. However, based on your input, we have requested our property managers to take a second look, and if there is any doubt as to its condition, we will replace it. As a side note, the bed is listed as queen size on our VRBO web site. As a point of clarification with regards to beach access from the cottage, it is about a 5-8 minute walk from Dolphin Lookout to Caysera Beach. This is based on our personal experience as well as input from our guests such as noted by Mike C. in his review of April 12, entitled, "perfect." However, if guests are not into walking, have dive gear, or our beach equipment to carry, then a golf cart would be preferable. Thanks again for taking the time to provide us with your comments and share your experience. We are always looking to improve Dolphin Lookout and need the input from our guests to do so. Ben & Cathy

MESMERIZING Dolphin Lookout~ You have to see it to believe it!

  • 5 of 5

Most beautiful place my husband and I have ever seen!! We had been dreaming about this place for a year, but all the beautiful pictures do not come close to the beauty you behold when you actually arrive! We had a week full of adventures~ golf cart driving, kayaking to Scotland Cay where the water is so clear, we saw starfish, sandbars, stingray ... It was so amazing, we had to return. We made many trips to what we called "our beach". You just have to see it to believe it ... This one has the posted beach signs & with the rock formations and the colors of the water, this one was one of our very favorites! And to top it all off, we usually we had this beach all to ourselves. Nippers was great for food/drinks and the views were beyond belief. We would have drinks, lunch/dinner, then walk down the steps and swim in the beautiful waters. It was just a beautiful week for my husband and I to celebrate our anniversary. We are so thankful to Ben and Cathy for the opportunity to stay here & to Gina/Ronald for all their help while we stayed. Just love, love, love Dolphin Lookout!

Perfect for us!

  • 5 of 5

There’s not much we can add to what’ been said about the insanely beautiful view from Dolphin Lookout except maybe to say that the water is even closer than expected. It’s clear that Ben’s put tremendous thought into both the design of the cottage and the property; both inside the cottage and out, there’s a lot to explore. The kitchen had everything we needed for meal preparation. The bathroom was stocked with lots of toiletries and an ample first aid kit which was nice as our checked bag, with all our liquids, arrived two days after we did. The library included several guide books on fish, shells, birds, etc.

Outside, Ben’s carved paths to particularly scenic spots. About 25 ft to the left of path that leads to the Adirondack chairs, is a path that leads over coral to the surf’s edge, with a spot for a beach chair. The view from there of the Atlantic is spectacular. Count all the shades of blues and greens you see or simply listen to the surf.

We enjoyed snorkeling from the dock, with the best location being toward the stone jetty of the adjacent property to the right. We did see Bob the barracuda once at sunset.

We loved Cay Sera beach, and, thanks to Ben, also discovered North Beach, about a 10 minute ride north of the Settlement. Same beautiful water but with gentle waves, suitable for jumping and/or riding. We spent time each day at each beach.

We emailed Troy of Dive Guana in advance of our arrival to schedule the “north trip” which includes a snorkel off Baker’s Bay, a visit to No Name Cay to see the swimming pigs and a not to be missed visit to Manjack Cay to swim with nurse and lemon sharks, sting rays and sea turtles! We also tried for the “south” trip to Fowl Cay Reserve, Elbow Cay and Man-O-War, but the wind did not cooperate. Next time!

Susan Knowles was wonderful to us, despite our flight issues. She managed to get us from the airport to the ferry in just over an hour with a quick stop at the liquor store and a lightning fast, but complete, shopping excursion to Maxwell’s in between. She’s a peach! Gina, too was great, meeting us at the ferry with our golf cart and answering questions for us throughout our stay.

Between Ben’s guide and a website I found called abacoforum.com, we had a great idea as to what to expect, enabling us to get the most out of our time on Guana. And, despite the frustrations of our getting there, we’ve fallen in love with the Cay and have already made plans to return.
