Overview

About the property

Villa, 3 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6) plus outdoor shower

Location: Cane Garden Bay, a 10 minute walk to the beach or a short drive to all the North Shore Beaches.

Accommodations: House – 3 Master Bedroom Suites – 3.5 baths + outdoor shower (Sleeps 6)

Nestled into the verdant hillside of Tortola’s north shore, 300 feet above the sea a 10 minute walk to the beach at Cane Garden Bay VILLA ALLANO is a spacious villa that has everything you need for a perfect Caribbean vacation.

Each of the three large bedrooms has an ensuite bath with large walk-in shower and is furnished with a king-sized bed, custom closets and matching tropical hardwood furniture. Air conditioning throughout the villa ensures living and sleeping comfort year round, although the trade winds and ceiling fans keep the house comfortably cool. Beautiful artwork throughout the villa, tasteful furnishings and gracious teak outdoor furniture make this a very special place.

VILLA ALLANO is on two levels; on the second level, two master bedroom suites open to a 30 foot long covered verandah. Cushioned teak steamer lounges make this an ideal location for early morning coffee or late afternoon relaxing. But if work beckons or if you just want to write home, each of these two suites is also furnished with a desk. The villa also offers high speed wireless internet connection and a cell phone to make local and long distance calls (manager will explain use and costs or ask when making inquiry).

The large L-shaped first level has a fully-equipped kitchen and beautifully furnished open plan living and dining area, and also opens to a 30 foot long covered verandah, which leads to the outside dining area and pool.

On the patio by the pool are a teak table and chairs for your alfresco dining, and teak steamers and sun lounges provide plenty of space for sunning or reading. The gazebo that overlooks the pool provides another quiet lounging area. Be sure to try the outdoor shower at the side of the gazebo: private, shaded by beautiful tropical plants, it also offers views of the sea and the islands in the distance. Also opening to the outside deck and steps away from the pool is the third master bedroom suite. Every area in VILLA ALLANO opens to a panoramic view that includes Cane Garden Bay, St. Thomas, Jost Van Dyke and other islands. The sunsets are simply spectacular.

VILLA ALLANO is ideal for families or three couples. It is a three minute drive or ten minute walk down to the beach at Cane Garden Bay. The walk back up takes slightly longer, but provides good exercise and is a great excuse for a pina colada and a dip in the pool! Also within a short drive from the perfectly located VILLA ALLANO are the BVI capital of Road Town, as well as the north shore beaches at Brewer’s Bay, and Long Bay and the surfing beach and famous Bomba's Shack at Apple Bay; a short distance further is the beautiful beach at Smuggler’s Cove. VILLA ALLANO’s many amenities and comfortable living spaces make “staying in” a delightful option, but a veritable smorgasbord of restaurants and night spots are just a short drive away.

Arrangements can be made by our house manager, Cassandra, for you to be met at the airport or ferry terminal for the drive to VILLA ALLANO. Cassandra will also help you find the best places to eat, make reservations for day sails, etc. She is a wealth of information about the local culture and people, and is always just a phone call away. Rental of four-wheel drive vehicle (a real necessity on hilly Tortola) can also be arranged.

VILLA ALLANO is non-smoking; maid service is provided mid-week.

About Jeffrey and Colleen Cohen

Villa Allano was built in 2006 by a set of three partners and friends from New York and California. Some of us have been coming to the British Virgin Islands since the mid 1970s and all of us have a deep love for the islands and people of the British Virgin Islands

Jeffrey and Colleen Cohen purchased this villa in 2006

Why Jeffrey and Colleen Cohen chose British Virgin Islands BVI

We chose to build Villa Allano on this beautiful piece of land overlooking Cane Garden Bay and Ballast Bay because we love the people and the village of Cane Garden Bay and the lushness of Tortola's north shore. The British Virgin Islands is unparalleled in natural beauty and great marine activities and this home gives great access to both. We designed Villa Allano to be a comfortable home away from home with plenty of outdoor space for relaxing, sunning and dining.

What makes this villa unique

All of us would say that one of the most unique benefits of Villa Allano is the view, and especially the view of the sun setting over Jost Van Dyke while the lights of St. Thomas twinkle on in the distance. In fact, the view is so spectacular and the pool is so refreshing that sometimes we just spend the day up at the house. The location is pretty unique, too. We can walk down to Cane Garden Bay beach, and one of our favorite things to do is to go down for a late afternoon swim followed by rum punches at one of the beach bars. On Tuesday and Thursday nights we go listen to local singer-songwriter Quito Rymer play at his Gazebo, right on the beach and on Saturday there's a barbecue in the village and we love going down to eat great food and mingle with the locals. We are also a short car ride to Brewers Bay and Smugglers Cove, where we go for a change of pace. We can take the Road Town Ferry up to the Baths in Virgin Gorda or the West End Ferry for a day trip to Jost Van Dyke and the Soggy Dollar Bar ('Soggy Dollar' because there is no dock so sailors frequently swim into the bar and pay with their soggy dollars!). On occasion we take a day sail and snorkling trip to Norman Island on a small charter catamaran, the Kuralu. There is also a nearby spa that we call for an at-home massage by the pool. Of course a shower in the outdoor shower is pretty awesome, as is an afternoon nap in the hammock in the gazebo, or just floating in the pool at night, looking at the stars.

Incredible views

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the house and I’ll be pretty balanced in terms of articulating both positive and negative things. First of all, the view from the property is incredible. You’re up a ways on the hill with a view of neighboring islands, a small harbor and miles on end of the beautiful Caribbean. The house has nice sized two level deck. There are two bedrooms in the upper level and there is a deck off those two bedrooms. There is a similar deck on the lower level off the family room and dining room. The view from both levels is spectacular but the one from the upper balcony is best. The house is appointed with many comfortable outside chairs and lounges with nice cushions. The pool itself is quite small but the pool area itself is a nice size. The house seems perfectly designed to shade most of the pool area from the sun during the better part of the day so you can sit in the sun if you want or the shade. For us, this was ideal. Also, with the northern exposure the sliding glass doors face in the bedrooms, you never have to worry about the sun beating down in the morning.

As to the negatives, the first one is that the trip up to the house requires navigating some extremely steep hills with tight turns including a one-lane road on the way up to the house that is shared with several other residents. There are going to be some challenges getting up and down from a place high a hill like this but I found the drive to be a bit hair raising especially at night. Another thing and it was just an annoyance is that of the three lamps in our bedroom, two were outright broken and the third was unplugged with a light bulb that didn’t work. There was no remote control for the fan in our bedroom. The skimmer for the pool was missing the handle. The seal had broken in a couple of the sliding glass doors and there was a hazy film inside the door panes that couldn’t be cleaned off because it’s between the panes. There were several instances of things like this where it appeared the property could be a little better maintained. In the end, all of these things were just minor. Overall we loved the place and the trip. The only thing that prevents me from saying this place is paradise is that someone down the street keeps chickens and roosters and you can hear the roosters gong cock-a-doodle-doo constantly from dawn to dusk. It was a bit ridiculous and funny but also a little annoying.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your thorough review. It is obvious that you put a good deal of thought into it, which we appreciate. We strive to keep the property up to the highest standards and are presently addressing your concerns; however minor they may seem to you, they are important to us. Driving on Tortola can be very challenging, especially at night and when one is not familiar with the roads or accustomed to driving on the left. That is why we always suggest that Villa guests rent a four-wheel drive vehicle; it is also why you see so many SUVs on the island. But, as you point out, the pay-off to Tortola’s steep hills are the magnificent views. Chickens and roosters are allowed to run free everywhere on the island and are a nuisance. Referring to the chickens –and goats—that range freely here, there is a saying that this is the only place in the world where you can be a farmer without owning any land! But in our mind there is also no place more beautiful or with nicer people. Thank you again for your review. We take it very seriously,

Fantastic location and lovely, comfortable home

  • 5 of 5

What we loved about this Villa: great communication with owners, very friendly property manager, homey feel, comfortable beds (this is pretty uncommon I've found, even in relatively high-end places), gorgeous views, well-equipped kitchen, outdoor shower, decorated tastefully, direct balcony from all bedrooms, nice breezes so no need for A/C, and close to hiking and a wonderful little village and beautiful beach.

The technology was a little dated (small TV and old Ipod doc) but we didn't care. We weren't there to watch TV.

When we were there we did some exploring to find the "best" beach on Tortola. We found the closest beach to the house, Cane Garden Bay, to be one of the best. We loved the gentle waves, calm swimming water, pretty sand, and convenience of bars and restaurants right on the beach. Cane Garden is a really lovely little town. The atmosphere is so mellow and the people are so friendly. They also have 200-year old rum distillery there and if you hang around town you're bound to meet some of the family members. The rum is quite tasty and very affordable (don't buy it at the grocery store, buy it directly from the distillery). And this beautiful little town with its gorgeous beach is only a 3-minute drive from the Villa. It's also a 10-minute walk down and a 13-minute uphill walk back. The roads can be a little precarious to walk on (and to drive on) so be careful. But it's a nice little workout to walk to town and back.

Beaches we visited on Tortola: Smugglers, East Long Bay, West Long Bay, Cane Garden Bay, Brewer's Bay. Out of those Cane Garden and Brewer's were our favorites.

Brewer's Bay beach is about a 10-minute drive from the Villa. It's much more rustic and barely developed. We actually prefer this type of undeveloped beach but when we wanted to be closer to the Villa or to have more options for food and drink we went to Cane Garden. There is one little bar/restaurant at Brewer's that closes at around 3.

Another favorite for us was the proximity to Sage Mountain National Park. This is a lovely place to hike. It's less than 10 minutes away by car. We got up every morning at around 7 and hiked there (we had to work off some of that rum and all those pineapples!). If you're used to extensive hiking you may find it small but we weaved back and forth on the various trails and easily got an hour-long hike each day.

All in all, we LOVED the mood and feel on Tortola and thought the location and vibe of the villa was perfect.

Ace's all the way-

  • 5 of 5

Just finished a great 2 week trip to Tortola in this wonderful Villa. My wife & I have been traveling to VRBO's for 12 years - a different Carribean island each year. This was a top 3 for sure. First, the communication between the owner and myself, then with Villa Manager (Cassandra) was exceptional. The little details that are helpful prior to arrival were quickly answered. The directions from West-End were perfect. There is always a adjustment driving on the "other side" along with roads I was not accustomed to - these directions were spot on. The location of the Villa is ideal. A few min drive to Cane Garden Bay -3 happy hours daily with live music, great restaurants -Tony's, Mietts, Quito's and music every night of the week. (If you can catch Quito with his full band on a Saturday it awesome ...standing room only!) West end is only 15 min drive, town is just over 20 min away. Smuggles Cove, our favorite beach was wonderful. Stop by the makeshift bar, say hello to Nigel and if Andrew is cooking the fish is it is a treat for $ 15.00. We also enjoyed the BBQ at Sillies in Carrot bay 8 min away and Thelma's near the airport.

Cassandra, the mgr is very wonderful. Very helpful and knowledgeable about the island.

The villa is outstanding. Pride of ownership is through-out. The villa was well built and in great repair. Some VRBO's we have visited the photo's were not representative of the view, condition, etc. (One Villa we stayed at in Bon Aire there was a satellite dish was in the center of the view.!!!!..) The photos of this villa accurately depict the villa. The kitchen is very well equipped. Bedrooms / bathrooms are large and comfortable. The view is wonderful - you can not see a neighbor, the pool area is very private. Villa is well designed.

Easy day trips to Jost Van Dyke and Norman Island on two different ferry's - a great time on both islands.

Congrats's to the owners for owning / running a top notch VRBO. I would highly recommend this Villa.

Nit-picker

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time! There are a couple of very minor flaws which I may be the only one to notice, like an inoperative bathroom window and a few fogged thermo-panes, only one of which was annoying. It is listed as limited accessibility, but I am handicapped and found NO inconvenience. Our healthy offspring thrived on the available walks and walking access to the village and other destinations. Ten mile excursions for them were a daily occurrence and thoroughly enjoyable. We never used the air-conditioning because the ventilation is remarkable. Our children, however, found the upper floors more comfortable for sleeping with it on; they are late sleepers and the island's plethora of feral chickens woke them a bit early. We ARE returning!

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed Villa Allano and that your family took full advantage of its great location. All windows and sliders in the villa are Dade County approved hurricane glass. We have contacted PGT Wingard to have the necessary parts shipped to fix the windows. We look forward to your return visit!

Wonderful vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

What a great base to explore the beauty of BVI - access to sun, sand and surf. This excellent property has amazing views of Cane Garden Bay, Jost Van Dyke, St. Thomas, access to best beach on Tortola, private pool and well fitted living space. The outdoor eating area was well used during our visit. The three king-sized bedrooms with individual on-suite facilities met our needs very well.

We can't wait to return to Villa Allano.

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

What a great place! The pictures do not totally capture the beauty of the views. Villa Allano was very comfortable, well equipped, and just a couple of minutes from the great beachfront bars and restaurants of Cane Garden Bay. Smugglers Cove is not that far, and well worth the trip. We also spent some time over on Jost Van Dyke - a great island with White Bay, probably the best beach we've ever seen. There are so many things to do - one week didn't seem like enough. Villa Allano was a great home base for my wife and I, and three teenagers, and the pool and hammock set-up made it very relaxing after the days adventures of diving and snorkeling. We would recommend Villa Allano to anyone looking for a nice place to stay with a lot of adventure nearby. Thanks Cassandra for your help!
