Brand New Suite - Private, Comfortable, View Auroras, & town close
Carol or Les Smallwood
About Carol or Les Smallwood
Les & Carol Smallwood, have been residents in Fairbanks, Alaska, for over 28 years. The home you'd be staying in has been built by Les. The year purchased just indicates the year we purchased the piece of land it sits on. Located among aspen and spruce trees, the bungalow suite is on the ground level on the whole right side of the first building on the property. The other side of the building houses our storage area, fully separate. We have two dogs (friendly and will not bother you). We love our location and privacy and hope you'll consider staying with us. We look forward to making your stay memorable.
Carol or Les Smallwood purchased this Bungalow in 1991
Why Carol or Les Smallwood chose Fairbanks
Our place is Not located in Ester, it is located only 3 miles from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, (UAF) on the West side of town in Fairbanks. This property is a total of 2.5 acres that was purchased by Les Smallwood in 1991, and then he began the process of clearing the woods and building the house you see today on it. We picked this part of town because it is near the University, doesn't have a lot of commercial business cluttering and hiding the natural beauty of the area, it is private and quiet, and it is still very close and convenient to everything in town. It is also located within the best schools' districts in the city, ensuring that our kids would go to the best public schools available.
What makes this Bungalow unique
Living with woods all around means privacy, and that you may get visits from the local moose. The air is fresh, and the water tastes good right out of the faucet, no filtering needed. If you are here in the Summer, the days are long and beautiful. In the Winter, the auroras are clear and strong, without any city light pollution. VIDEO of the AURORAS during an exceptional evening on Sept 28, 2017, by my husband, Les Smallwood, looking towards the house, RIGHT OVER THE VRBO. Of course, the auroras raged way longer than the short video represented here. It is typical when there is a night of high activity, on clear nights that the auroras can be seen right outside the door, if you just walk out and look up. Sometimes you have to look North, but Most of the time, they arc right over the house. It's almost as if we picked the spot for the house according to the natural line of the auroras.

Honeymoon in Fairbanks
My husband and I travelled to Alaska for our honeymoon, we know, who honeymoons to Alaska especially in October.. but it was a blast! We flew in to Fairbanks and stayed at Les and Carols bungalow suite. Needless to say, the place was immaculate! It was beautiful, clean, cozy, and full of everything we needed! Carol and Les were so nice and gave us so much information during our stay. Carol even brought us celebratory wine for our honeymoon. The place was great, the hosts were amazing, and the location is exactly what you’re looking for on a getaway.
Hey thanks so much for the beautiful review! Congratulations on your marriage, we wish you all the best!
We're happy you had such a good time at our place, and thank you for leaving it so nice and clean when you departed!
You're welcome back anytime!

Great guest suite
This bungalow is gorgeous!! Looks brand new and it is so cute! Full kitchen made making meals super easy. All the dishes, silverware, pots, and pans I needed to cook with; even several spices! TV, fireplace, and comfy couch for quiet nights in. Close to airport and stores, and quick access to trails and Ester Dome - which was a great recommendation in which to see the Northern Lights from! But also quiet and private a bit removed from city lights. Hosts Carol and Les were quick to respond to questions and had several suggestions for things to do and see. Enjoyed my stay at this great guest suite!
Thank you for the very wonderful review you gave us! We are happy that you had a lovely stay and were able to see the Northern Lights, and especially that you were comfortable! We like to provide most of what a traveler will need to be able to cook a nice meal, that is a bonus of having a place with a full kitchen, and we're glad you enjoyed it!
You're welcome back, any time you'd like to come again!

Excellent spot to view auroras from when they are active and the weather is clear. West end of town, close to airport & University, botanical garden and LARS ( Large Animal Research Station) - caribou & musk ox viewing
