About Erin

My husband and I bought the Lost Shaker of Salt in February, 2007. We started running the property as a vacation rental by owner in 2008. We live three hours away and go there regularly ourselves. Mike is in retail and I (Erin) am in computers. We are a thirty something couple. We love the Jimmy Buffett lifestyle. We love music, cocktails on the top deck, and having a great time. We are pround memebers of the Parrothead Club of Tidewater. We wanted our cabana to be relaxing, fun, and cheerful, all at the same time. We think we accomplished that at the Lost Shaker of Salt. Come check us out, we know you will be pleased!

Erin purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Erin chose Hatteras

Mike and I got married up the beach in Kill Devil

Hills seven years ago and ever since it has been our dream of owning a piece of our own paradise.

What makes this cottage unique

We love our little place. We want you to have a nice stay there as well. We try to make your experience as memorable and hassle free as possible. We provide many little 'perks' you are just not going to find at big rental companies. We are constantly adding new features and amenities to make your and our trip more fun, and travels to go smoothly.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We would like to go ahead with a contract for next summer if possible. This will be our sixth year our family has rented from you all and we can't think of a better way to spend our vacation. Thanks and God Bless.

A few minor improvements needed....

  • 3 of 5

Lost Shaker of Salt is a small but comfortable cabana, close to the beach. There were two minor but annoying problems. There were three remote controls for the TV/DVD player. They weren't properly marked, and a couple didn't have batteries, which wasn't obvious at first. Eventually, we figured out which remote control operated the TV. And the DVD player didn't work, which is unfortunate because we had some bad weather. When told about the problems, the owner said the TV would be replaced, suggesting that she may have known that it had problems. The other small and annoying problem is that there are no screens in several important places - the sliding glass door, the front door, and the window over the sleep sofa. We couldn't have cross-ventilation without letting insects inside, forcing us to use the air conditioning when it really wasn't needed. I realize these are fairly small things, but the owners should take care of them for the next visitors.

Bugs and cnfusion

  • 2 of 5

Cabana was unclean. There were bugs and range, back of tv and top of refrigerator dirty, sticky and dusty. Unit needs pest control. Had t disinfect unit. Lower level outdoor light did not work. Another couple had code to our door and were letting themselves in because they were told they had same cabana. No one could reach a representative to clear up the confusion. No remote for DVD. We drove miles to rent from Red Box and could not watch our movie.

Beach and view were lovely.

The most relaxing vacation ever

  • 5 of 5

The property was just like it was featured on VRBO . It was bright and welcoming and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay . Even on rainy days I enjoyed my stay because the cabana was arranged where you felt like you had Lotsa room and it was a ray of sunshine i’m hoping to stay two weeks next year instead of one like I did this year . Thank you guys for making my vacation the best I’ve ever had ! Cathy

Nice place and great location to the beach. Restaurants all close by. Could use some minor upgrades, and there weren't any trash bags.

Needs some attention

  • 3 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed our stay in Hatteras. Location was great, the cabana was nice and clean. It is perfect for two.

There are several small complaints that would have easily made our stay perfect. There were at least 3 light bulbs blown, and the sun catcher still needed to be dusted (noted in a prior review). The deck furniture on the perch (top deck) needs to be replaced. There's only one semi-safe chair to sit in (broken but stable enough to sit in). There was no match to it and the reclining chair had the arm fall off as my wife sat in it-- almost causing her to fall onto the deck. A folding chair had to be brought up so that we could both be up there at the same time. The deck is a very desirable place with the small interior. It is a great place to sit in the morning and evening and look at the ocean.

The keyless entry was broken (not allowing us to lock the door for the majority of the week). This was addressed with the owner mid week however we checked out on Saturday afternoon and nothing had been done about it to that point. I did try to replace the batteries for her however this did not seem to be the problem.

Over all we gave a 3/5 because of the patio furniture and the keyless entry. We had a great time and would visit Hatteras again. Probably would not stay at The Lost Shaker though. Owner just doesn't seem to be responsive to the needs of the property as many of the same issues are in one of the VRBO reviews as well as in her guest book at the cabana. Sorry, just being honest.

Owner's Response: Dear Guest, I am sorry, I too noticed the Shaker needed a little attention, and was able to get in right after your stay and get some of these things fixed. It is very hard in peak season as these units get very hard usage from renters, and the turn around times are measured in hours. Many of the things on your list were personally attended to by me and my husband. I am sorry you were disappointed, I guess I got there a week or so too late. In the future, it would be nice if you could tell the owner your issues, so we have a chance to get things fixed and corrected. I live 3 hours away, so unless guests inform me of issues, I have no way to know until I have a chance to see if for myself, which in peak season is hard to do.
