My husband and I bought the Lost Shaker of Salt in February, 2007. We started running the property as a vacation rental by owner in 2008. We live three hours away and go there regularly ourselves. Mike is in retail and I (Erin) am in computers. We are a thirty something couple. We love the Jimmy Buffett lifestyle. We love music, cocktails on the top deck, and having a great time. We are pround memebers of the Parrothead Club of Tidewater. We wanted our cabana to be relaxing, fun, and cheerful, all at the same time. We think we accomplished that at the Lost Shaker of Salt. Come check us out, we know you will be pleased!
Erin purchased this Cottage in 2007
Why Erin chose Dare County
Mike and I got married up the beach in Kill Devil Hills seven years ago and ever since it has been our dream of owning a piece of our own paradise.

First off, the cabana is adorable. For the most part we loved it. But...if you are a late sleeper, this is not for you. There is a window near the ceiling with no covering along with just sheers over a sliding glass door. 6:00 am and it looks like 9 in there. The shampoo and lotion dispenser in the shower were empty. We had to purchase those items after arriving. The description says queen size bed. It's a full, not queen. None of these are major items, just be aware. There were broken shingles and nails on the front deck. My husband picked them up and moved aside. We will stay again when in Hattaras.
Thank you for the review of my place. I am sorry we ran out of shampoo on your stay. We restock these things and many other small items to help make your stay a little easier, and unfortunately there was a breakdown on the shampoo. Stocking these items actually costs me quite a bit each year, and I am happy to do it for my guests as it just makes their trip easier, but I do say in my literature that it is an honor system and sometimes it breaks down. Most outer banks rental companies, and not of the ones in my complex, do not provide any of this, and will charge you additional for your sheets as well, which I do not.
The bed is definitely a queen size bed. It is less than a year old and is a very nice bed that I took a lot of time and effort purchasing to find the right thing that was most popular as it is really important to me to have a comfy bed on vacation. Most guest reply it was very comfortable.
We try to keep our place up kept and it needed a new roof which we just replaced. I am sorry for the shingle. That should have been picked up.
Thanks for your review. We try to make your stay as nice as we can.
Clean quiet cabana. Very comfortable. All our needs were there! Owners very nice, I had a problem making my final payment and they were lovely about it. The neighbors there are also very friendly and very nice.
Awesome! Totally recommend staying here. The cabanas are right on the beach.
It is so beautiful here. The cabanas are right on the beach. Very relaxing. Hatteraus is a quite and peaceful town. I liked hiking the woods in Buxton, and seeing the lighthouse. Also highly recommend a day trip to Ocarcoke. But best of all- Erin's cute cabana has everything you need for a great trip.
Cute, Cozy, Will be back
I loved this little cabana. It was perfect for my long weekend. It had all the essentials and the the beach was right there.
Clean, vibrant, perfect winter getaway!
The unit was adorable. So bright and cheerful which was exactly what we needed in the winter. The beach is stunning. We saw a seal pup one day basking on the beach. So incredible! Had a great
time. Thank you for proving such a fabulous winter getaway.
A few minor improvements needed....
Lost Shaker of Salt is a small but comfortable cabana, close to the beach. There were two minor but annoying problems. There were three remote controls for the TV/DVD player. They weren't properly marked, and a couple didn't have batteries, which wasn't obvious at first. Eventually, we figured out which remote control operated the TV. And the DVD player didn't work, which is unfortunate because we had some bad weather. When told about the problems, the owner said the TV would be replaced, suggesting that she may have known that it had problems. The other small and annoying problem is that there are no screens in several important places - the sliding glass door, the front door, and the window over the sleep sofa. We couldn't have cross-ventilation without letting insects inside, forcing us to use the air conditioning when it really wasn't needed. I realize these are fairly small things, but the owners should take care of them for the next visitors.
