Overall fantastic stay. We spent each morning enjoying the sunrise on the deck and watching and listening for birds. The house was clean and well furnished, with plenty of space for a large family! We took advantage of the water front access and proximity to Harkers Island as we are avid kayakers. While the house is a bit outside of town, the peace and quiet can’t be beat. We look forward to staying here again!

Very beautiful and comfortable home but didn’t realize how remote it was 30 minutes from anything 😬and when the wind is blowing the internet and Wi-Fi is out 😞 the 4 days we were there it was out for 2 and we couldn’t do any work 😞 they should put on their listing how remote they are and how far they are from a beach 😞
On the first day we arrived the AC was on 50, couldn't understand why. When we turned the air up to 72, the ROACHES started to come out! We bombed the home on Sunday and contacted Spectrum on Monday morning, they did send a pest control company out on Tuesday at 530pm. It was so bad there was 3 different kind of roaches and the pest control confirmed that no one had sprayed in a while, but Mary from Spectrum said they had it sprayed quarterly. Not True. The homes were very dirty my husband had to help move the refrigerator to make sure it was sprayed behind and clean behind it. The pest control guy even expressed how dirty the kitchen was and how it needed to be deep cleaned. The beds had black dog hair on them but that was the least of what i was worried about. We ended up having to throw out food from the Roaches. We contacted Spectrum on Friday after all the cleaning and throwing out food and other items and basically, they came up with excuses not to refund our fees. We didnt ask for all the money back only the fees they charged since they didnt provide a clean home and or a bug free home. Spectrum did offer us another home, but it had 2 camera and I refuse to stay at a home and not have privacy. That is why we didn’t ask for all the money back just the fees. We had to keep the air on low to keep the roaches at bay. Someone either Spectrum or the cleaning person knew the home had roaches as to why the air was on 50! We will not ever rent from company again!
We had a great stay at the Downeast Retreat. Our group was a mix of all adults (friends & family) and the house was great. One friend was even able to utilize the dock for his flat bottom boat. Our V shaped boat was put in at the wildlife ramp just a couple miles away. My only complaints about this property is the amount of fees you have to pay almost double the cost of staying here, so keep that in mind before booking. In addition, the check in and out times seem rather harsh. You lose a lot of time when check in is at 5 (although we did get to check in earlier at 2 but that's not guaranteed) and check out is at 10 am. Finally, the trash situation is not the best. For the amount we paid to stay here, trash services should be included. You have to take out your own trash, and for weekend stays, the dump doesn't open until 1pm but you have to be out of the house by 10am.. so we had to haul all our trash home which I thought was nuts. Anytime the landfill was open we were out on the water. If we had read the manual more carefully on arrival we could have planned better but we were too excited to start having fun!
For groups and families looking for a quiet place to relax, you can't beat the location. The house was clean and comfortable, with plenty of room and bathrooms for all to use. I so enjoyed having a morning coffee looking out at the water in peace and quiet. Great spot for a low-key vacation especially if you have a boat.
All in all, I would definitely stay here again but I do wish some changes could be made in regards to check in/out times and the trash situation.
We have stayed at this house for the past 4-5 years and we have really enjoyed every year- that's why we come back here every year! The view off the back deck is so nice and exceptionally relaxing sitting in the rocking and enjoying the view! There is an osprey nest right in front of the house and it is fun watching the parents fishing for their babies! Highly recommended!!
Comfortable and peaceful location. We only suggest advising boat owners a bit more about the property and advising guests that final trash drop off is not possible for Sunday checkouts
by10am... trash center did not open until 1pm on Sunday.
This is such a great location with an awesome view. The fishing is great all around this area, with close proximity to Cape Lookout, and Shackleford banks. The creek feeding the dock area is very shallow at low tide but doable with a skiff. A very beautiful home well furnished with nice decor. All the neighbors were very nice. This truly is a “Downeast Retreat”
Can’t wait till the next time
This house was the perfect place. The views were lovely from the deck and from inside the house. The sunrises were breathtaking. There was plenty of seating and the kitchen was well supplied. The location was quiet and restful but we were very close to Harkers Island ferry and downtown Beaufort. We HOGHLY RECCOMMEND this lovely home.
Really like this property. Airy open living area, big enough bedrooms ( master of course is bigger ), big deck, dock, gorgeous view! night time viewing of the sky is spectacular!!!! (there are no street lights around!) planets, constellations, and the Milky Way- absolutely beautiful! Osprey nest out in the water and you could hear the babies chirping! This is the 4th year that we have stayed there and I hope to stay there again next year!
This is a very nice home. Descriptions are spot on. It is designed well and there are enough spaces so everyone is not on top of one another. The decor is modern and has a beach feel. The dock is nice and allows for access to the water and also allowed us fun with cast nets. We caught shrimp and crabs right from the dock. The location is also good related to both Harkers Island as well as Morehead City. Really nice property.
Great time at the beach with family! Loved the layout of the home and the convenience of the boat dock.
The office staff (Michael and Claudia) were quick to respond and help.
Overall our family had a nice time and enjoyed a relaxing weekend in Beaufort.
Pros: great view. Outdoor seating for many. Well equipped kitchen. Many bedrooms. Plenty of parking.
The view was great although you can’t swim here so if you’re looking for that be prepared to drive to a nearby beach.
Opportunities: damp/mildew smell - needs a refresh, dirty couches need cleaned or replaced, quicker/more clear communication from mgmt.
Our family noticed a smell of mildew or dampness was that attempted to be covered up by a lot of air fresheners. Yes, we may be sensitive, but the smell was quite overwhelming. I imagine this home has seen a lot of rain, etc from hurricanes due to its location so we assumed that was why. I’m not sure what could be done about this but air fresheners made it worse to us.
The kitchen was well equipped and there was plenty of space for our family. White couches may not be the best choice for a rental but other than that the living area was fine too. We stayed outside on the porch or dock much of our stay.
The management company may want to take some time to re write the check in/out directions and house rules. They were there but they used a marker to X out the old mgmt company and wrote in their name. Not a huge deal but we found it odd. It would have taken 10 minutes to retype those so they were new and fresh.
Also it was not clear that a pet fee would be included. The details should list that if a renter will have to pay $250 per pet. We picked this house because it was pet friendly and ended up not bringing our dog because of the large fee.
I polled our family and we would rate it a 3.5/5 mainly due to the smell. The other things aren’t a huge deal.
Thank you for opening your home to us.
