The National Geographic Society used the Northgate House for eight weeks during 2014 while working on an upcoming Yellowstone film documentary. They lived at the Northgate house while making the film and used the garage for their film editing. They also set up a blind in the yard to film some of the local wildlife. Those that have rented the Northgate House will recognize some of the scenes in the upcoming National Geographic film.
The North Gate House is a beautiful, vacation home completed in 2008. The house has approximately 2,160 square feet of space on three levels.
There are many special touches throughout the house from the soaring 21 foot high ceiling of the great room to the solid oak, wide plank flooring, to the custom glass paneled deck. From the wall of windows in the comfort of the great room or outside from the deck, you will have unobstructed views into Yellowstone where herds of elk and bison can often be seen grazing. Big horn sheep are often viewed walking the ridge behind the house.
The house includes a fully equipped kitchen with a large capacity dishwasher, above the range microwave and beautiful hickory cabinets. There is central heat and air with individual controls for each floor (a must for high desert summers where temperatures can reach the 90's at times), HD satellite televisions, high speed internet access, high efficiency washer and dryer, a Renai hot water system (you'll never run out of hot water)and a bathroom on each level.
The lower level bedroom consists of two twin/single beds, an HD television, blu-ray player and Xbox system with 15 games and 4 controllers. The main floor bedroom has a queen bed, HD television and blu-ray player, while the upper level bedroom consists of a king size bed with a High Definition/satellite television system and blu-ray player. There is also a High Definition 3D/satellite television system with blu-ray player in the great room.
Situated in the quaint town of Gardiner, you will be able to find anything you need. There are many cafes, restaurants and numerous shops, a grocery store, post office and bank. There are fishing guides, rafting companies and outfitters that offer horseback riding both in and outside of the park.
The fishing in the area is wonderful and inside the house you will find instructional videos on flyfishing plus a book guiding you to the different waters in Yellowstone which are all just a short drive away. There are two Blue Ribbon streams within a mile of the house, the Yellowstone which is 3 blocks away and the Gardiner River approximately 1 mile.
In the winter there are many available activities such as ice skating at Mammoth Hot Springs (6 miles from the house), snowshoeing in Yellowstone and the surrounding area or cross country skiing. There is snowmobiling with rentals available in and out of the park, down hill skiing at Bridger Bowl (94 miles away) or Big Sky (175 miles) and our favorite - wildlife viewing in the Lamar Valley where you will likely see herds of bison, elk and possibly some of the Yellowstone wolves.
After a long hard day of activities you can relax in the hot springs of Boiling River on the Gardiner River (3 miles away) then come home to the luxury of our new house overlooking Gardiner, The Northgate House.

About Rick Brown
We live in Oklahoma where we have a ranch and business but spend as much time as possible in Montana. It has come to be our 'other' home and the place we plan to retire someday. We love spending time in Yellowstone, a place we consider to be one of the most beautiful places on earth as it is ever changing and most amazing.
Rick Brown purchased this House in 2008
Why Rick Brown chose Gardiner
We chose to build a home in Gardiner due to its proximity to YNP and because we simply liked the town where old is mixed with the new. We looked at properties on each side of the park but kept coming back to Gardiner for it's color and character. We were blessed to find the property to build on just one mile from the North Entrance to Yellowstone.
What makes this House unique
From the comfort of the house or out on the deck you have unobstructed views into Yellowstone. In the winter, we have sat in the great room and watched bison that come down from the higher elevations of the park to graze. Elk and mule deer pay frequent visits to the house. You also have a great view of the town of Gardiner. Due to its location, you have the convenience of being in walking distance to town but also privacy as the house sits on a larger lot and backs up against the side of a mountain. When building our house we kept in mind the things we liked (and disliked) about vacation homes we had rented while traveling and built from that perspective. The comfort of our guests is truly of most importance to us.

Best place we have stayed in Yellowstone area!
We loved the North Gate House. We travel to Yellowstone every winter and have stayed in the park lodges, motels and other VRBO houses. This was by far our favorite place to stay and we will definitely be heading back. The house is very clean, roomy, equipped with everything possible that we needed and with the most incredible views of the park and area! I don't think you could find better views from the town of Gardiner.
Rick and Cheryl are terrific and were really helpful and great to work with. We had a family emergency come up and we weren't sure if we were going to make it and they were very willing to work with us. We even got to meet to meet Cheryl in person as they just built another house next door that is absolutely beautiful and now for rent on VRBO. We can't wait to stay at that home as well. We highly recommend renting this home or any home from them.
Our time in Yellowstone was incredible and it is so great to have a house with so much room to come back to after a day in the park.
We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful house. It was very well stocked and almost felt like home. The view of the mountains from the deck we're breath taking and you can see the Northgate entrance going into the park.We sat on the porch in the mornings and watched some of the wildlife. We even seen a Momma deer nurse her baby!I highly recommend this place. We found everything we needed( gas, groceries etc)for our stay in the town of Gardiner. We will definitely book here again!
Beautiful ,well equipped home
This home is convenient to the park, clean and very well equipped. It is on a quiet street in an area that is walkable to the market and restaurants. Each bedroom has a plenty of room for your things. It even has a laundry basket in every bedroom. I love staying in this home. This is my 5 th stay at the Northgate house and recommend it to anyone that asks where to stay to visit Yellowstone. Just remember it has 3 levels. You enter through the garage which has hooks for your coats and packs. The main living is on the 2nd level and master is on third. The large windows have views of Sepulcher Mt. and Electric Peak. Love to look at those mountains.
Just Like Home!
We rented the Northgate house in Sept. 2015 with my parents and loved it so much, my sister, brother-in-law, husband and I rented it again for our Winter in Yellowstone-2017 visit. It is just like walking into my own home - the kitchen is so well stocked. It was funny - every time I asked, where is, "x", my sister found "x" in a drawer somewhere. The large dining table was excellent - we usually ended the day there with great food from the well-stocked, impressive Gardiner market nearby and enjoyed our pictures from the day's adventures.
I love that it was so close to all the small-town restaurants and the Northwest entrance gate. The house itself was very clean, great channel selection on the TV for those of us wanting to unwind late in the evening, and to top it all off, a great view over Gardiner! The nice basket with snacks and drinks to take with you hiking or on day trips was a very nice personal touch.
With my sister / BIL living in LA, they were used to different indoor temps than my husband and I (from Missouri), so having 3 thermostats was a big PLUS for us! The convenience of having a third bathroom downstairs as you were leaving for you the day was nice for us ladies. :-) and the large, very clean garage where we could stage all our gear was a huge help. Winter clothes, boots, snowshoes, etc. take up a lot of room and it was nice to be able to remove all that in an enclosed garage.
A variety of bed sizes allowed us all to choose what we normally sleep on (my husband and I prefer Kingsize)! The only one small thing I would ask for on our next trip (since this was a winter trip), would be a few more rugs in the bathroom.
Everything and more you could ask for in a VRBO. Thank you, Rick and Cheryl for helping make our winter trip to Yellowstone so comfortable and memorable!
WOW! What a house!
This home was absolutely fabulous. My daughter, my friend and her daughter enjoyed our week at the North Gate House last week immensely and can't wait to return to this magical place just outside of Yellowstone National Park's north entrance. Prior to this year, I had always stayed at Mammoth Hotel and the Snow Lodge inside the park but I doubt I will do that again as this home was so much more than a comfortable room. The owners have supplied everything we needed and then some. Separate rooms for me, my friend and the kids was quite the luxury as it gave all of us some personal space at the end of busy days.
The view from all the rooms provided continuous entertainment as mule deer, elk and horses were always doing something interesting. The balcony is huge and a wonderful place to use my spotting scope for photography of Cedar Waxwings in flight and close ups of the animals.
We cooked dinner and breakfast in the well-stocked kitchen and enjoyed some meals out in the town. The market is easily within walking distance and even walking to the Roosevelt Arch is easy and fun.
The garage was a wonderful luxury in winter too and a necessary staging area for dressing for cold weather trips. I can't recommend this home highly enough for any season, but for winter, absolutely spectacular!
Great Stay at the North Gate House
We enjoyed our vacation at the beautiful North Gate House in Gardiner, MT for 10 days in September 2016. We would sit in the living room and see elk and deer walking through the yard. A large bull elk was about 10 feet from the back door.
The three story, 3 bedroom/3 bath house was perfect for our family for those wanting to take naps or go to bed early. We went to Yellowstone National Park almost every day and the location of the house to the entrance gate was perfect. The grocery store was close enough that you could walk to it if you wanted to. Nice restaurants are also close by. There is a book on the kitchen counter with all the information you need for the house and the area, including menus for the restaurants.
Rick and Cheryl’s description that the house includes a fully equipped kitchen is an understatement. They have every possible gadget in the kitchen you would ever need. Also, plenty of dishes and silverware. There is also an abundance of dish towels, dish cloths, garbage bags, soap for the dishwasher, paper towels, etc. The biggest surprise was a basket with snacks and drinks to take with you hiking or day trips.
The three bathrooms were equipped with an abundance of bath towels, wash cloths, toilet paper, and items you would have in your own bathroom.
The only items we had to purchase while there for 10 days was our food. The grill was nice and weather was excellent for grilling a few times.
As an FYI, we have rented cabins/houses a number of times and you have to provide your own paper products and cleaning supplies. Some rentals only had one dish cloth, one or two dish towels, and three to four bath towels and wash cloths requiring you to do laundry more often.
We would recommend this house to anyone, especially with kids or a large family, wanting to visit the Yellowstone National Park or Gardiner area. Enjoy your stay!
